Not Nothing By Gayle Forman

There are moments when this book shines mainly in the beginning but it begins to go off the rails when this author decides to make this book about every social issue known to man My head started to spin after awhile and I found myself checking every other page to see how long until I d be out of my misery. EBook Not nothing else Starts off as a sweet book about a kid who s had a rough go in his 12 years of life and is given a chance for redemption as a nursing home volunteer Growing up with a mentally unstable mom changing schools twice every year finally getting stuck with an aunt and uncle who could care less about him makes for a kid with fairly poor mental health himself He doesn t think he s worth much He s guarded Doesn t trust easily In every situation he s waiting for the other shoe to drop Then an unexpected thing happens A resident who hasn t spoken in a long time opens up to Alex on their first meeting Over the course of the following weeks he tells Alex all about his first love and facing death as a Jew in WW2 Poland Toward the end we find out why Alex was assigned to court ordered community service We also realize that he s a changed boy as a result of his interactions with the residents fellow volunteer Maya Jade facility workers and social worker It s meant to be a feel good story but falls flat for me These changes and realizations were like a pretty package disguising a disappointing gift inside It s all too neat Too much happening There s the nursing home story the Holocaust story and a smattering of characters to cover race religion sexuality and gender issues The social worker admitting he s trans out of the blue at the end as a one sentence gotcha is almost laughable in its poor execution Unfortunately there s weirdness Elderly resident Josef uses the 2nd person voice aka you but he s not talking to the reader He s talking to his beloved deceased wife It feels off Very little worked for me in this book The moral came through loud and clear which is to rise to the occasion of your life Excellent theme for a kid s book But as I mentioned the beginning duped me into thinking this was going to be a fantastic book and it wasn t Hence 2 stars 288 ARC provided by Young Adult Books CentralAlex has had a difficult life His mother struggled with mental illness and when she could no longer care for him he was placed in foster care Now his aunt and uncle are raising him but doing so reluctantly and frequently complaining about the cost Alex had done something very bad at school and as punishment he has to do community service five days a week at the Shady Glen Retirement Village all summer His social worker Frank brings him to the facility and introduces him to the director Ms Winston who tells him to talk to Ms Sandler This turns out to be Maya Jade a girl his age who is spending time volunteering and hanging out with her grandmother Vivian while one of her mothers is being treated for breast cancer Alex isn t thrilled to be at the facility but he does connect with Joseph Kravitz The 107 year old man connects with something in Alex and starts to tell him the story of his relationship with Olka the love of his life during the Holocaust These chapters are presented in a different font Alex starts to get invested in the people at the facility even intervening when the administration and families want to separate Ginny and Dickie two of the residents who have Alzheimers All along we hear the story of Joseph s experiences during the war eventually ending with his time in the Plaszow concentration camp We also find out what Alex did to end up having to do community service Like Sonnenblick s Notes from the Midnight Driver this is an interesting exploration of the interplay between the young and the elderly Joseph often referred to as Josey can sense that Alex is troubled and manages to overcome the physical hardship of being over 100 to talk to the boy Alex is enthralled by Josey s story and the relationship between the two is mutually beneficial Much of the book is told from his perspective but in a third person omniscent way which is a bit unusual For much of the book Alex is referred to as the boy because of this narrative style We don t know for much of the book what has caused Alex to have to spend so much time at Shady Glen but we do find this out at the end of the book He certainly benefits from this found family and the support that he gets from Maya Jade and the residents of the home and it s good that he doesn t have to spend all of this time with his uncaring aunt and uncle or alone in their apartment Given the difficult living situation with his mother I m surprised that social services didn t have him in traditional therapy but nursing homes are popular locations for unofficial therapy as shown in Van Draanen s The Secret Life of Lincoln Jones This is a good choice for readers who want to explore the Holocaust from a distance and have read other titles like Lowry s Tree Table Book Marsh s The Lost Year Sternberg s Summer of Stolen Secrets Walters and Kacer s Broken Strings or Carelli s Skylark and Wallcreeper 288 Opportunities takes on new meaning in a novel with depth and heart. Not Nothing booklet Alex has gotten himself into trouble but has been given a second chance from the courts by helping out at a nursing home His father left long ago and he s been temporarily separated from his mother due to her mental issues The aunt and uncle he s living with see him as a burden and make their opinion clear constantly The nursing home is not exactly a place Alex wants to be Not only does it smell and is filled with zombies but the person in charge of him is a girl about his age who is as bossy and irritating as can be When he runs across Josey a 107 year old resident who hasn t spoken a word for the last five years Alex finds someone to connect withespecially since Josey deems that Alex is the first person worth talking to As Josey reveals his life during the WWII years not only does Alex start seeing things in a new light but his own life starts changing. Kindle Not nothing bundt Alex is a bit lost in life especially since he s gotten himself into trouble with the courts It s not said what he did until the end of the book which wasn t my thing but does have its purpose but it s clear that he s dealing with a very rough family life He s got an attitude and is rough on the edges but there s enough goodness shining through to see his good heart His situation is easy to sympathize with and some of his comments do add just the right amount of snark and humor So he s a well rounded character which is easy to root for and connect with. Not Nothing kindle unlimited Then there s Josey the 107 year old who not only adds a nice twist with his wisdom but opens the door to historical aspects of WWII His stories center around his relationship with the love of his life and take unexpected directions which build the tension while also giving insights into the time period Josey holds quite a bit of personality which comes across clearly with much of the novel written from his point of view These carry a third person omniscient voice in which he refers to Alex as the boy His tales from the past are printed in a slightly different font to make it clear when he s heading back in time So things never grow confusing despite the constant back and forth. EPub Not nothing bundt Even the other characters battle with their own issues and carry distinct personalities which help guide Alex along his way to learning to embrace opportunities This makes the read quick paced with something new happening with every turn of the page since so much is coming together There s a lot being explored in these pages There are family issues problems of living as a foster child even when with relatives moments of therapy dealing with cancer and Then there s the historical details of WWII and concentration camps All of this is set in a nursing home where even problems surrounding such institutions and people also somewhat come to light Still the story doesn t weigh down but it does hold a pretty serious tone even with a few lighter moments here and there to keep it entertaining and molded to the middle grade age group. Not nothing by stephen cave summary Readers who enjoy diving into heartfelt reads with inspiring character arc will enjoy this one It s also nice for anyone wanting to learn about WWII and life at that time It s not for everyone but it does carry a lot of goodness I received a DRC and enjoyed sinking deep into this well woven read 288 Thanks to Simon and Schuster and NetGalley for an advanced copy of Not Nothing by Gayle Forman to review Forman made the transition from YA to middle grade with ease writing stories that will definitely tug at your heart strings Notably the heart of this story is that you can t always judge people by their actions and that you can find connection in the most unlikely places I loved how Alex and Josey s relationship evolves throughout the book in that they both kind of needed each other. Not Nothing contemporary house Forman also nails the emotions in this story working through grief about past actions and trying to figure out how to move into the future In addition we also get Josey s story from WWII nestled in what s happening with Alex some of the emotions reflecting Alex s own struggles Forman wove their stories together masterfully to create an emotionally satisfying story. PDF Not nothing compares The side characters all play important roles as well in a way they all help Alex along his emotional journey Honestly if you re not reading middle grade right now you should There are so many great stories being published for that age group this one included Finally if you like books that don t shy away from the hard stuff with a strong cast of characters and strong emotions definitely check this one out later this month Review to come 288 I received this ARC from the publisher After an incident at school Alex is required to volunteer at a nursing home He feels like the world is against him especially when a girl his own age Maya Jade is put in charge of him But Alex begins to find himself liking being useful and he likes hearing the stories of the residents especially Josey a 107 year old survivor of the Holocaust As he listens to how Josey met his love Olka and the choices they had to make as World War II started he begins to forgive himself for how he acted and see others in a new light. Not Nothing fictional character Even though I ve read a number of books by Gayle Forman and most of them have made me cry I didn t expect that from this book which is how I found myself crying in a laundromat as I read the last pages This story was incredibly moving and engrossing Josey served as narrator and was an interesting character who didn t always make the right choices either Actually most of the main characters were flawed but still relatable and likeable Overall it was a lovely story about loss hope and redemption I would recommend this for ages 10 14 288 There are so many amazing aspects of this book I think the best is the reminder that judging someone based on their worst day will stop us from seeing them on their best 288 raise your hand if you re the dumbass who picked this up thinking it was going to be a PALATE CLEANSER 288 We absolutely need of this inter generational relationship in middle grade literature That being said I think this particular story would be better understood by readers 9th or 10th grade and above. Book Not nothing bundt I can t put this one on my shelves but I did enjoy reading it 288 Gayle Forman Frankie Bug Where She Went If I Stay combines WWII Holocaust experiences with an excellent modern day story of second chances and new opportunities Alex is only 12 but he has been taking care of himself and his mother through fourteen moves and twelve different schools until he finds himself in the temporary custody of an aunt and uncle who don t really want him his mom has disappeared and his anger leads him to assaulting a fellow student While the judge decides his fate a caring social worker gets him assigned to fulfill his community service hours at a senior living facility and Alex begins to change A key factor in this change is 107 year old Josey Kravitz and his story of how the love of his life taught him to rise to the occasion of his life amid the hell that was Hitler s massacre of Jews and anyone else who did not fit his idea of worthy Forman s cast of characters includes Maya Jade a know it all who also volunteers at the senior center and goes from a major annoyance to friend Frank the social worker who knows that Alex has yet to show all he is capable of being as well as a host of vivid Shady Glen residents with all sorts of quirks and eccentricities Alex s chance to move beyond the worst choice of his life Josey s recounting of his WWII experience are the primary focus of NOT NOTHING but nestled in among those two plot threads is the message of the worthiness of all of us Text is free of profanity and any significant sexual content However Maya Jade and Alex do discover an article about intimacy between residents in senior centers and chuckle over the thought of the residents doing it Alex also wonders about hugging his friend because she might have boobs The only violence in the book is a fairly detail free accounting of Alex s attack on his classmate Representation Maya Jade is Korean adopted by two Caucasian moms Alex s victim Toby is homosexual social worker Frank is trans with a wife and daughters Josey and at least one other senior are Jewish 288 I was given the ARC of this book by the author herself at a book event after I told her how much it meant to me as a reader whose goal is to read books by Jewish authors and with Jewish characters that she is so proudly Jewish I m not typically a middle grade reader so I never realized how much substance a book for children can have This is an absolutely beautiful story about love and growth and how one act can change your life I loved the POV this was written in and really love Josey and Alex and Maya Jade I will absolutely cherish this story and recommend it to anyone who will listen to me gush about how beautiful it is 288
