Westfallen By Ann Brashares

Jessica and Jason I would have found things clear The characters were well developed and the friendship each of the groups and even though each kid was from a different background and their personalities were different they worked well together The plotting was good and it was suspenseful when they realized they had changed the outcome of the war and even though they destroyed the radio finding ingenious ways to communicate I wish I had a 7th grader again to share this story even though at times it was kind of dark Not crazy about the ending I would not be surprised to see another book with the characters Thank you to Netgalley and Simon and Schuster Children s for the digital copy Ann Brashares A mismatched trio of old friends find themselves together again after digging up a strange radio that lets them communicate with three kids who are the same age and live in the same town but 79 years in the past What starts out as a weird but harmless connection leads to a much larger problem The information they share with the kids in the past changes history The biggest issue occurs when the recent group end up in an alternative America under Nazi rule with no clear path on how to undo their meddling with time This is designed for middle school readers and features a diverse threesome of friends on both timelines and all of the coming of age angst Great for kids that started with THE TIME WARP TRIO and want the dystopia found in adult titles like THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE A cliffhanger ending means there are adventures to come My thanks to the publisher for the advance copy Ann Brashares An excellent historical fiction alternate history story that will surely teach the target readers about the world wars that my generation studied in school Ann Brashares has built a career on writing the stories her audience wants to read SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS was one of the hottest titles when released and WESTFALLEN should have the same response. Westfalen events Three friends have known each other since they were very young but their friendship has grown weaker as they move into differing circles in middle school They are drawn together when they discover a means to communicate with children their age from the past They thought they were careful to not share anything that might affect the future from the past but now they live in a completely differennt present and must figure out how to fix what they have broken This is truly an excellent book for everyone over the age of 12.

Three 12 year olds in 2023 find an old radio in the shed and surprisingly it works and they can speak to three kids in 1944 They inadvertently change things in history and the book is a race to fix it It was told from the point of view of the kids from 1944 Alice Lawrence and Artie and the kids from 2023 Henry Frances and Lukas I had to keep checking with who was where I think if the kids from 2023 had names like Aiden including us old folks A very shareable book that has earned 5 easy stars Ann Brashares Tension runs high as reality changes overnight to leave three friends unsure if they can ever return to life as they knew it. Westfalen jagd The gerbil is dead which isn t a huge event in itself but to honor the class pet Henry decides to invite his once two best friends to a mini funeral Surprisingly the two show up While they help him dig the grave they hit an old buried radio Not only does it work but they find themselves conversing with three kids from 1944 who are worried about the raging WWII A type of friendship forms between the six kids but they soon notice that even the smallest thing can change history in huge ways Even something as simple as purchasing a candy bar sets off a string of events which no one could have seen coming. Westfalen apotheke marl This read grabs so much than I thought it would Starting with the death of a gerbil it draws in with bitter sweet heart and immediately gains sympathy as Henry reaches out to two once best friends which have drifted away on their own paths The curious discovery of the radio doesn t set things off right away but expertly lures in as the fantastical side has a chance to gain footing and the world of 1944 with Alice and her friends gets needed depth And it does this while keeping the pacing pretty high the entire way through Switching between Henry and Alice the two sides of the tale come to life and the tension becomes double as the intertwined tales run parallel to each other It s easy to root for both and wonder how each group will make it through their very different yet dangerous situations. Westfalen-blatt WWII doesn t hit with tons of details and facts but rather gives just enough to make life during the period clear while working in some historical tidbits along the way There are one or two small inconsistencies with the time period but mostly it does a lovely job at bringing 1944 across in a way readers can identify with and understand The author also does a good job at opening up to further thought The Butterfly Effect comes across clearly and propels the plot forward in a thought grabbing way It opens up the door of what ifs and does get those brain gears turning There are some open questions surrounding some characters and the affects of some changes in 1944 aren t completely wrapped up But then judging by the ending there is going to be a book two and I m curious to see where that will lead. Westfalenklinik dortmund This is an unique and fun twist to time travel which offers quite a bit of tension while bringing in some historical goodness I received a DRC and enjoyed the read Ann Brashares 3 kids in 2023 stumble onto a radio that allows them to communicate with 3 kids from 1944 in New Jersey This book mixes a little spy craft with butterfly effect for a very thrilling book The kids from future find out the children in the past s beloved candy store will burn down the next night and feel compelled to tell them The 1944 children save their beloved store with the new information But the day after they saved the candy store the 2023 children s world has changed A person in their class doesn t exist that one change has shifted something across time Turns out her father when he was a young adult was shot during a robbery at the convenience store that was once that beloved Candy store All six kids scramble to fix it but in fixing that a then a bigger problem comes up now the 2023 kids wake up and the United States of America is under Nazi control and called Westfallen The book is intense and keeps you wondering what s around the next corner I really enjoyed this book and think it s great for young readers shows them a bit of history and is intriguing enough to keep their attention I received this an ARC goodreads giveaways if you are not currently signing up for those you should Ann Brashares WestfallenAnn Brashares grew up in Chevy Chase Maryland with three brothers and attended a Quaker school in the D. New York site_link From 1 New York Times bestselling Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants author Ann Brashares and her brother Ben Brashares comes an action packed middle grade alternate history thriller that asks what it would be like to wake up in present day America if Germany had won World War II Henry Frances and Lukas are neighbors and they used to be best friends But in middle school things can change fast Frances has become an emo art girl Lukas has gone full sports bro and Henry has gone sort of nowhere But when a dead gerbil brings them together again the three ex friends make an impossible discovery a radio buried in Henry s backyard that allows them to talk to another group of kids in the same town on the same street in the same backyard seventy nine years in the past The kids in 1944 want to know all about the future are there jetpacks Laser guns Teleportation Most of all they want to know about the outcome of the war their dads and brothers are fighting in Henry and his friends are cautious they ve all seen movies about what happens when you disrupt the fabric of time but figure there s no harm in telling them a little bit just enough so they can stop worrying so much And at first everything seems fine Nothing s changed well nothing so big they can t contain it anyway Until Henry Frances and Lukas wake up on May 6 2024 to an America ruled by Nazis They changed history And now it s up to them to change it back WestfallenNooooooooooo Could not put this one down But the ending Ann Brashares E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusHenry Frances and Lukas used to be good friends but when the children developed different interest in middle school they saw less and less of each other When their gerbil dies Henry contacts the other two for a funeral While digging they unearth an old radio and manage to get it to work They talk to three children their age Alice Lawrence and Artie who are also from their New Jersey town They arrange to meet and both groups are disappointed When they talk again landmarks come up Alice is confused about a war memorial being at the specified location and Henry is confused about Snyder s Sweet Shop Why Henry is in 2023 and Alice and her friends are in 1944 The groups try several experiments to connect across time and are both clearly tied to the same house address and a shed on the property When Henry finds out that Snyder s burned down because of a faulty hot plate Alice and her friends make sure to get the owner to unplug it The next day at school one of Henry s classmates Ada is not there and her father s magic shop isn t either although the Snyder s building is Upon researching they realize that Snyder s became a convenience store and Ada s father was killed working there in 1987 Alice and her friends manage to get the store to burn down a few days later but things go badly badly wrong Unfortunately both sets of kids destroy the radio so that they can t contact each other and start other butterfly effects It s too late however Instead of being in the USA the children in 2023 are now in Westfallen which is run by German Nazis While Frances is Aryan and therefore doing well Henry is part Black so assigned to work details in a hospital instead of going to school Lukas who is Jewish is assigned to hard field labor Realizing that they have to find a way to return the world to a course where the US is victorious the children discover that a telegram was sent from their town that caused D Day to be a German victory They manage to communicate across time and the shed helps Henry and Frances remember the ways things were before Lukas however has his actions circumscribed by his discriminated against status Will Henry be able to find the woman who sent the telegram and stop it from alerting the Nazis Strengths Almost as good as time travel Communicating across time Who wouldn t want to stop a soda fountain store from burning down Some nice wordplay on Westphalia in the title and the story has just enough detail without getting bogged down in politics Henry s desire to get his friends back together for some interesting adventures gives us a good excuse to get the radio up and running and I appreciated that both groups were perfectly willing to accept this odd occurrence There are enough period details about the 1940s to differentiate the two groups The alternate US is horrible enough to motivate both groups to try to keep in contact and save the world Very intriguing story Weaknesses We don t get too many details about what happened to Alice s mom and I could have used a little explanation of how Henry and Alice are related Also there is a short scene in 1944 with folding a fitted sheet Fitted sheets would not have been widely adopted until the 1950s I m a stickler for details like that and there was no good reason to have specifically fitted sheets What I really think This has some similarities to Scarrow s Time Riders 2011 with the Germans winning World War II but that is as old as my students by this point Also this gets a lot of bonus points for the radio that connects the two time periods I can t think I ve ever seen anything like that The Voyagers feel to this definitely appealed to me The ending of this had Ada pulling up in a van and telling the kids to get in so I wonder if there will be a sequel Ann Brashares Thanks to SimonKids for the ARC This is a very fun page turner of a read I loved the parallel ish characters the healing of friendships the magical delight and discovery of communication between decades The speculative 2023 felt uncomfortably possible It s a little scary in that regard but balanced with so much fun humor history I think it s not too tense for the age range The scene in the school camp was the only one that jumped the shark a tiny bit But it was fun My 15 year old is reading it now It s maybe a little young for her but she s really enjoying it I d read book 2 Ann Brashares Warning Upon finishing this book you will experience an urgent desire to read historical fiction Six kids three from 2023 three from 1944 They unexpectedly make contact with each other across the decades after discovering a radio that appears to be broken at first glance When a cardinal rule of time travel is broken don t tell what you know about the future it puts literally the entire world in danger of being ruled by Nazi Germany forever Because when time travel rules are ignored sometimes the bad guys win Great introduction to history for middle grade readers If this had been released when I was a kid I would have devoured it than once As an adult I found it difficult to put down My only complaint is that two of the characters both boys have names that begin with L Lawrence and Lukas I found it a bit difficult to keep them straight while reading Just a small annoyance I really enjoyed this book Can t wait for the next one in the series I received a digital copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review All opinions are strictly my own Ann Brashares thank you netgalley and simonkids for this book i don t usually make a habit of reading middle grade books but this is so well written informative and still age appropriate i suggest you guys guve it a try for your kids 3.5 rounded up Ann Brashares
