Get paid for mystery shopping uk site_link Fast paced devious and twisty the pages turned themselves I loved it Liz Mistry A satisfying and well constructed police procedural Cara Hunter Too many enemies Too much to lose Following an arrest that went wrong leaving her disfigured and her life in ruins DCI Lizzie Archer transferred to Buckinghamshire s Aylesbury Vale hoping to rebuild her confidence her career and her life Eleven years later she s happily married her career is back on track and she has friends she would trust with her life But things can change in a heartbeat Meanwhile her friend and colleague DI Dan Baines has worries of his own as the long shadow of the serial killer known as the Invisible Man continues to hang over him When the chance comes to finally get answers to some troubling questions he is almost afraid to learn the truth Because sometimes the reality can be worse than your imagination Soon after receiving unsettling threats from local criminals an old flame makes an unwelcome return to Lizzie s life Days later a grisly murder too close to home plunges her into a nightmare that could cost her everything as suspicion falls on her and her husband Dominic Dan and his team are sidelined from the murder investigation but they re not going to let that stop them when a friend is in trouble And the clock is ticking Because if they can t uncover the truth soon things will get even worse for Lizzie and Dominic Price to Pay A devious twist ridden page turner Archer and Baines Book 7 DCI Lizzie Archer has just about stopped looking over her shoulder after an incident that left her wounded and is rebuilding her life Her ex finds her and wants to get back together however Lizzie is now very happily married One of her team Dan has a shadow of a murder still hanging over him The perpetrator was incarcerated as was his accomplice but there are other murders which may or may not be attributed to them Lizzie receives a threat from a well known crime family as she helped put away one of them who was killed in prison When there is a murder close to home her nightmare gets worse as she and husband Dominic are under suspicion Who is doing this and why I quickly got into this and liked Lizzie and her fierce determination and tenacity in the face of adversity Its a very well written police procedural which puts the reader right in the heart of things This is a multi angled read as there are two crime lines to be dealt with Lizzie s and Dan s It s clever it s twisty and very engrossing with an unexpected twist at the end A highly entertaining read I most thoroughly enjoyed. Book price to pay ratio For reviews please follow me on Twitter X or Threads nickisbookblog Crime Fantasy Mystery This originally appeared at The Irresponsible Reader WHAT S PRICE TO PAY ABOUT It s not necessarily news making when someone threatens a DCI But DCI Archer gets a couple of very fresh threats from family members of someone she s just put away and from a would be organized crime heir and things seem to be a little real than usual She s ready to ignore them both but some spoilery events prevent that. Price to paint deck More annoyingly an ex some might call him the ex tracks her down and announces his intention to win her back Archer is utterly uninterested in him and her husband is not amused by his antics at all The ex is on the verge of turning into a full fledged stalker and Archer s mild mannered husband is about to try to get into a fistfight over this. Kindle price in bd As the distractions and annoyances start to pile up there s a murder The initial evidence points at Archer and her husband and a lot of their past starts coming back to haunt them There are plenty of alternate suspects around but none of them are quite as convenient for the police Archer on the other hand Meanwhile DI Baines has to deal with the repercussions of stopping the serial killer The Invisible Man on his family who were almost victims As the expert in The Invisible Man he s also brought in to consult on some cold case murders that might be connected to him As much as he wants to help out his loyalties are divided because Archer needs help a lot sooner than these cold cases although he s officially not allowed to be working on the case for obvious reasons BACKSTORY BACKSTORY BACKSTORY Now it takes a little bit for the plot to get really rolling along because there is just so much backstory involved with Archer and Baines individually at this point Particularly when it comes to Archer she s got connections with just about everyone we meet early on in these pages. Book price to pay ratio example As this is my first time reading Sivers I don t know how many of these various and sundry people are making their first appearance in these pages and how many are just people from her past that are being brought back into her life in this book It really doesn t matter because Sivers will pause the narrative long enough to catch you up with the relationship history between Baines Archer and these people from their pasts. Price to payk12 Most authors do this and most of the time it s good as a refresher or a way to get a new reader oriented But with a book as rooted in the past and the ties between characters past and present as this onetaking the time to give all this background really slows things down I think I d have appreciated Sivers finding a better way to blend these into the narrative rather than stopping everything It was such a momentum killer. Book price to pay ratio example That saidall the backstories were pretty interesting A couple might have been a smidgen too soap opera ish for me but still interesting The amount of work and character development demonstrated by these says a lot about the series that s been built up to now. Price to payk12 SO WHAT DID I THINK ABOUT PRICE TO PAY Once all the dominoes were set up the crime established the motives the backstories told Sivers started knocking them over and things moved so well that all the annoyances of the stop and start pacing of the early chapters were forgiven To change up metaphors it took a long time for Sivers to get his hook into me but once he did I couldn t stop turning the pages. Cost of an ebook This is such a rich detailed world with a very clever and well executed mystery And as is necessary for a police procedural series to be as established as this one the characters are really well developed and jump off the page It s a real treat to read. Epub price to pay ratio While Price to Pay can serve as an entry point to the series and has a strong stand alone element to it the amount of ongoing character and story arcs involved are going to be an obstacle for anyone approaching it without some previous knowledge of Archer Baines and the rest and what they ve been up to lately Is it worth persevering Oh yeah But you should know that going in And by the time you re done you ll be curious about what s next and maybe about what was before Based on Book 7 Books 1 6 are quite the ride you might be well served starting from there I will admit that I m not sure what kind of future the series has but it should be fun to see. Book price to pay ratio example If you re not new to this series obviously you re not going to have that difficulty You likely won t need me to suggest that you give this a shot you re probably ahead of me on that point Still if you haven t gotten around to it you should probably remedy that. Crime price to pay uk That s two paragraphs just to say Price to Pay is an entertaining and rewarding police procedural that I recommend to you Crime Fantasy Mystery The novel moves along at a brisk pace with the interest never flagging There is lot packed into the novel with essentially two investigating teams at work one officially the other surreptitiously and a cold case review The switching between the various elements is well judged managing to keep all the plates spinning and the reader engrossed It is very much a police procedural story though and the jeopardy is of the reputational rather than outright danger I guess we need to read the earlier novels in the series when McNeil was at liberty for that There are bodies and some urban grittiness but this is Aylesbury not Glasgow and what there is feels just right There are also shades of darkness with the events inside prisons. Price to payk12 The plot is clever beautifully put together and very tricky without pushing too far There are three plausible suspects at least to begin with and there are three separate events that prove to be catalysts but it s not a case of matching three to three that would be far to simple This is just the central strand that puts Lizzie and Dominic in the firing line Dan s strand is a bit straightforward but only just and contains a nice twist of its own What I loved during the final quarter when the pieces start to come together the reader thinks ah but and then the characters pick up on this and another layer of the onion is peeled back only to be repeated I did say it was tricky The central characters are well formed and likeable enough to sustain a series Lizzie immediately brings empathy how can a reader not like a woman who has been physically disfigured and emotionally damaged but still recovers to put her life back on track She is one of those nice bosses we all want but rarely come across and is also not averse to maverick tendencies when needs arise Dan is a man who has also recovered his life towards normality only to have it thrown into disarray once again The sense of partnership between Lizzie and Dan is strong and is the glue that holds it all together Whether a whole team would go off reservation for the sake of their superiors is a good question at least in this case I think it is reasonable to suggest that they would for these two. Where to buy epub Family life is a theme throughout What would an individual do for the sake of his loved ones to protect them or to extract revenge It also poses the question can a child have anything nearing a normal upbringing with a serial killer At first it seems preposterous but as Jack now Peter says it is what he knows and he still thinks of Duncan as his father still regarding him with some affection This is something Dan struggles with until Jack points out that Dan s own current arrangement is certainly unusual and when he sets it out it does have a ring of the Jeremy Kyle show about it Crime Fantasy Mystery Book 7 in the Archer and Baines series and 11 years after a disfiguring injury DCI Lizzie Archer is happily married to Dominic and working from Aylesbury Vale station DI Dan Baines and his wife now have a daughter but Dan never stopped longing to find his son Jack who was snatched at 2 years old when Dan s first wife was murdered Although part of a series this could be read as a stand alone as the author has made important events from the past clear An easy read that I finished in one sitting Briefly Lizzie is shocked when a former partner looks her up and seems intent on getting back together with her completely ignoring the fact that she s now married and not interested in him Meanwhile Dan s has received a prison visiting order he has been longing for and dreading in equal measure Lizzie is a very strong character and she has been through a lot but this time events don t just affect her but her husband and just when you think this is one step too far step up DCI Lizzie Time to fight back and she does Well written and well plotted and although I had my suspicions I really wasn t sure until the reveal and then there s another twist A very good police procedural I enjoyed it a lot Crime Fantasy Mystery In just one day DCI Lizzie Archer receives two threats one from the mother of Dougie Upman who has just been convicted of killing a man and another from the son of an organised crime family who blames Lizzie for the death of his youngest brother in prison and his father from a subsequent heart attack on hearing the news Added to the surprise meeting with her ex Rob Thomas the fireman who dumped her after she was scarred breaking up a pub fight and who has now informed her is determined to win her back despite the fact she is very happily married to Dominic and this is just the start of the week from hell DI Dan Baines is also having a bit of an tortuous time since his son Jack raised by his former colleague Duncan Mac McNeil the murderer dubbed the Invisible Man who killed Dan s first wife Louise and groomed Jack known as Peter McNeil to kill Dan s new wife Karen Louise s twin has finally agreed to meet Dan in Aylesbury prison Then Police Scotland get in touch wanting Dan s help with a number of unsolved murder cases they believe have a link to the McNeils Dan needs to know one way or another if his son is a killer but what will the truth do to him Events soon escalate with an arson attack on Lizzie s home but which of three possible suspects could it be Lizzie wonders if Rob had finally got the message to leave her alone but she ll never know as he is later found stabbed to death With Lizzie and Dominic as prime suspects her sidelined team soon rallies to help her prove their innocence And that means finding the real killer. Price to paint deck The closeness of the team and their loyalty and admiration for Lizzie is clear throughout this tense and very twisty story There s lots of continuing history in this series concerning the main characters which made me eager to go back and read from the start but events are well enough explained that this can easily be read as a stand alone The book is so well written that the pages almost turn themselves in a gripping police procedural book number seven in a brilliant series which I can thoroughly recommend Crime Fantasy Mystery
