Winter of the ravenjam Winter of the Raven is a collection of short stories some flash fiction and poetry that are mostly cold winter and some Christmas themes There is a distinct lack of ravens except within the poetry section if that is what you re looking for But given this is also POE Girl never Two of my expectations for this however were that this would include female or gender diverse authors and that the writing styles picked would be slightly less in the horror cheeky comedy category The sibling imprint of Poe Girl is Poe Boy and their anthologies have been cheek Halloween and at times exceptional schlock One of the stories from Gore 3 makes its return and the second story almost implies Poe Boy themes just with a Christmas overlay although most of the stories here are spooky and dark in theme rather than vengeance and viscera Based on raw comparison Winter of the Raven still brands itself as the bespoke of its siblings which was what I wanted from it going in That Cold Cursed Winter Moon by Wofford Lee Jones Thematically a great opening short Werewolves but alluring writing Horror on the Housetops by D. Book winter of the raven review A Schneider Given the intro I sound like I deck on this story hard but it s amusing and has a whole continuation of story just beyond horror monster of the week theme Very reminiscent of any Santa Clause beat em up story movie show The twist was amusing enough and that there was follow through on it was a bonus The Belgian s Song by Carole Bulewski Very much in Carole s writing style which I equate to tragic musings about horrible things written in a way so beautiful that one doesn t realize she s writing about something terrible until the story is almost over Squat by Leesa Wallace and Graeme Parker One of the longer if not longest stories in the collection The life of teen homeless runaways who have only each other for comfort and whatever derelict hole in the wall they can find to shelter for the night Desperation drives them to squat in an old insane asylum that drives all who enter to madness and death Classic sort of 80s 90s horror with a good start middle end and has enough content to chew on Molly Jane by Jude Deluca Appears in Poe Boy s Gore A Halloween Anthology 3 I thought this fun and horror dolls are always a welcomed read The Lychgate by Teresa Quinn Russel Promises to go all horror ghosts spooks zombies but in a way it s a softer reflective horror that marks the passing of time and a shared sadness The Bakers by T. Winter of the ravenjoys V Stone There is a renowned haunted town in France with a bell tower that tempts people to visit its forbidden stairwell We got cold we got winter we have spooks and a few guys screaming Satisfying read for me Footprints in the Snow by D. Winter of the ravenjam A Schneider I liked this I just did I really can t go into detail why but it works well The Widow s Lace by Toby Crabbie I skipped through this one because I can t do ghosts I just cannot do ghosts I really really cannot do ghosts It s creepy There Enjoy A Burnt Offering by Jessica Nuckles Oh goodie now it s onto haunted mine shafts Slowly edges closer to the scary part of the story while I m reading and screaming No don t go near there Guh I hate spooks There was a creak just now I jumped a little Lady Sacrifice by Jaime Munn Dang this is just awesome So much world building and with this rise of the Elder Gods vibes Despite that it has a feeling of a lot of backstory it left me tremendously satisfied by the end Story that tells story when it s over Love this one Winter A Dark Fairytale by Jessica Nuckles Probably doing this story a bit of disservice putting it next to Jaime Munn s as both are unique world builders with difficult to placate goddesses that love praise from their people but also evoke death Former definitely has the post apocalyptic vibes while this leans into its ice queen fantasy Both are good in their own right and maybe I m just of a sucker for Cthulhus The Butcher s Wives Twelve Days of Christmas Part 1 by K. Winter of the ravenfly cast T Gore Looking for a Part 2 Poems The Winter of the Raven the title of the anthology is where this combo is located and several others that reference the title motif I m not much of a poetry person and this anthology has quite a surprising array of them A Special Winter Present or Early Easter Egg by Graeme Parker A strange murder mystery that is hmm tit for tat and less cheek Yeah let s go with that English
