I am a child what's your excuse This book was first published as a short contemporary Harlequin romance novel in 2001 The author has clearly been able to obtain the rights to this book from Harlequin and has republished it herself with minor revisions such as the addition of cell phones It does not seem terribly outdated in any other way even though 23 years have passed. Whose Baby? book This novel offers an interesting twist on the secret baby romance trope as well as an extremely unusual variation on the IVF trope This story was written before the recently popular trope of so called curvy FMCs Dex refers to herself as plump rather than curvy However though she unapologetically enjoys eating she is definitely not overweight Rather she has a Kardashian hourglass figure with a tiny waist She also gets a lot of daily vigorous exercise as a bike courier which keeps her fit and firm In addition Jim actually earns his expected romance MMC six pack physique by working out daily in a private gym at his house It is a very pleasant change for the author to avoid for both the FMC and MMC a common frustrating tendency in romance novels to assert that each has a gorgeous body which is unearned via exercise. Excuse me miss what's your name The main romantic conflict of Dex s low self esteem around her presumed unworthiness as a parent got rather tiresomely redundant Also the eleventh hour introduction of a pseudo romantic triangle in the form of a marriage of convenience fiancee whom Jim has never had sex with was irritating than entertaining. Excuse me mister no doubt As was frequently the case 25 years ago in Harlequin novels there is no epilogue showing the couple enjoying their HEA The story ends abruptly after Dex agrees to marry Jim I obtained a Kindle copy of this book because it was on sale for free and I got access to the audiobook version as well because it was offered for free through my Audible membership When I listened to the narration I thought wow this is one of the most lifeless mechanical narrations I ve ever heard On top of the monotony of the reading with no natural emotions shown characters of all ages and both genders are narrated as if they are adult women I went over to Audible to check and see who the narrator is and discovered that not surprisingly this unsatisfying performance was created via AI Finally I don t usually care a whole lot about covers these days since all the books I read are ebooks or audiobooks but I must say that this self published novel has one of the ugliest covers I ve ever seen It does this book no favors 184 I really enjoyed this romance It was quite an original idea Some steamy romance tastefully written with some entertaining and lighthearted scenes involving side characters 3.
