Weaving this brave and compelling account of a short but hugely impactful time in her life What is just as extraordinary is how she never told anyone for decades until one of her sons happened to see something on line about her Keeping such secrets must also require huge bravery and strength of character she hints at the post trauma she suffered for years after The Last Secret Agent I was really impressed by this memoir Jude Dobson has done an excellent job of listening to Pippa and getting her story of her life with emphasis on her huge contribution in WW2 It was our honour that Pippa arrived in NZ by accident.

A wonderful reminder of the great sacrifices and prices paid by regular people during a difficult time in human history Pippa lived an incredible life where her intrepid childhood that immersed her in multiple languages proved invaluable in Nazi occupied France where she was able to blend in seamlessly with the local population while feeding England with the German Military s movements Pippa s story provides insight into the fearlessness and bravery so many everyday people exhibited without recognition The Last Secret Agent Books like this should be compulsory reading in schools Firstly such books make us realise and appreciate the enormous sacrifices that were made during WWII or any war for that matter but WWII continues to capture the collective imagination secondly the extraordinary and fearless courage that ordinary everyday people found in themselves to fight oppression showing that when pushed we are capable of such valour and thirdly the relative peace and harmony that most of us have lived under for the past 80 years is largely due to the bravery of those who fought against the enemies of this mid century period As the world international relations and democratic climate continue to spiral downwards you wonder what all those sacrifices in WWII were all for The recent DDay commemorations seeing the last surviving soldiers from those days still showing up have highlighted our continual need for heroes and reminders of what can so easily be lost if we don t stand up Standing up is certainly what Pippa Latour and the few hundred others involved in the SOE operations of WWII She was one of only 39 SOE women of whom 14 did not return An unusual childhood of adventure and few limitations plus fluency in French equipped young Phyllis for her role as a wireless operator in the occupied north of France for what turned out to be only 6 months or so But what a harrowing time it was For a start she was 23 passing herself off as a 14 year old What a feat of imagination and courage There are many terrifying stories told of these very brave young women living and operating behind Nazi lines one of the most famous as far as NZers and Australians are concerned that of Nancy Wake The story of Pippa is next level because it is told in her voice she is narrating the story It really is as if she is sitting in an armchair in her lounge her feet up a cup of tea to hand having intended going to Australia and so living out her life here until the age of 102 She had guts and nerves of steel yet not surprising her PTSD And I can understand totally her shedding of the Catholic Church While it s Pippa s story I feel all the brave women agents who were killed at the hands of the Nazis were deeply appreciated What a remarkable woman The Last Secret Agent What a story What a life This book shot to number one in NZ and went through 2 rapid reprints.
