I really felt like I got to know the characters well and got a whole story It felt like something that could be adapted into a cartoon episode or something It had a great lesson to be learned don t judge a book by it s cover good or bad Melanie was a little judgmental at the beginning with her best friend Violet kind of trying to be her voice of reason There was also a fun superhero twist that ties in with the author s other books This little bite size story has definitely made me interested to read the author s other books. Site_link post a commentThis was cute Writing was really good and love that it s based in SG Thanks Tian En for the e copy Melanie s Super Secret Dream Date Thanks Tian En for the ARC Melanie s Super Secret Dream Date is a middle school romance with fantasy elements set in Diamond City which is loosely based on Singapore Gen Zs and millennials may have given up on the idea of a dream date but young Melanie hasn t I do love the Singaporean inspired elements in this story although very subtle they re there from the food courts and bubble tea in the mall to the schoolwide recycling competitions It s cute I m reminded of my own primary school experience growing up on the island in the mid 2000s all kinds of contests and games they would have in school to encourage us to do science Young Scientist anyone or read or eat veggies and hanging out in the suburb malls after school In one scene Melanie daydreams about the new fish and chips place Fish Paradise in Diamond Plaza the home grown Fish Co along with others so called western food chains like Jack s Place defined my childhood as places that were reserved for special occasions such as doing well in exams or possibly coming first in recycling competitions lol I like the neatness of the unfolding drama of tweenage courtship contained within the 20 odd pages of this short story There s a cautionary tale at the heart of Melanie s Super Secret Dream Date against vanity and being taken in by appearances surely an important one for younger readers The later third of the story takes an abrupt turn towards fantasy as superhuman characters like Dark Magnet what a tacky name Melanie deadpans and The Shock are introduced perhaps long time readers of the series might better know what goes on in Diamond City but I was taken off guard by the unresolved and open ended conclusion of the story clearly set up to be continued in a sequel Overall an enjoyable read that faithfully evokes what it felt like to be thirteen and giggling with your friends over boys Melanie s Super Secret Dream Date This was such a heartwarming read I loved the character development in this book Melanie was a shallow popular girl in school she judged people by their appearance And sometimes the better looking ones are the ones that have the ugliest of the hearts A really cute book for middle grade girls Melanie s Super Secret Dream Date This middle grade book is a quick read but despite its length also packs a punch This book is the perfect example of not judging someone based on looks and that nice guys don t always finish last Our FMC Melanie is kind of shallow and judgy when it comes to finding her dream date As the story progresses the judgment and shallowness lessens after a dream date goes wrong I will say Melanie was not my favorite character I enjoyed her friend Violet most It s cool because this book just doesn t cover Melanie s quest for a dream date there s superheroes and a shift in perspective on how she views prospective dates Overall this was an easy read that kept me interested Melanie s Super Secret Dream Date This was such a cute little story and is a perfect example of Don t judge a book by its cover Melanie is searching for her dream date and it was fun to see how she realises things She is sweet and Scotty too I am very interested to know about The Shock if the authors decide to tell us Melanie s Super Secret Dream Date
