With topical problems she was trying to overcome like toxic positivity It was also great to have an autistic aroace protagonist I also enjoyed that it was mainly set at a bakery with a diverse set of side characters This was a great read Recipe for Confidence DNF ARC Review DNFd at 64%I just couldn t do it The writing was clunky af and the dialogue was unbelievable I was pulled out of the story too many times by writing that just didn t make sense The messages this book has are great But I refuse to believe a whole school is talking about setback cakes as if they re the next best thing They re not THAT interesting But apparently the main character Bryn has become a whole celebrity over the things This book also seems pretty messy with how much conflict is happening Even the setback cakes are part of the conflict with random strangers calling for their removal It s just all a bit too much. Cooking with confidence cookbook Thank you to the author for the free advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review Recipe for Confidence It feels like this book was made for me It features an AroAce autistic main character the only way that they would be me in fictional form would be that they were transmasc Study hall is not the sanctuary it normally is because I forgot my headphones This is the first time I ve come across a character who relies on headphones and music to cope with the world despite the fact that I m aware that it s a fairly common experience for autistic people Oftentimes people don t trust me to know myself because I m autistic This is a sentiment I come across all too often specifically in queer spaces With young trans people they re told they re too young to know especially if they ve known since they were a child But conversely if someone doesn t realise they re trans until they re in their 20s or even in their 50s suddenly they re too old and why didn t they know sooner While it s not wholly related there is a correlation between autism and queer identities And the same things get said to autistic people too and it s sad The simple fact of someone having different needs does not negate their ability to know their own mind and make their own decisions I love this book I felt very seen and very represented in through Bryn Thank you to author Samantha Picaro for sending me an ARC copy of this book Recipe for Confidence Bryn a high school junior grapples with the challenges of autism wrestling with self esteem issues exacerbated by her tendency to compare herself unfavorably to her friends achievements Despite her aspirations she views her autism as a barrier to success Yet when her aunt who once presented her with a remarkable opportunity returns to town Bryn is offered another chance to showcase her talents Unfortunately her traditional parents and conservative community fail to recognize her potential in graphic design aligning with her aunt s bakery graphic design ambitions. Book recipe for confidence boost I didnt love this book only because I think its for a younger audience Other than that its a great read and I very much encourage folks to purchase this for their younger family members Bryn is a high school student who has a growing interest in graphic desgin When a family member returns to town after a tense departure in the past Bryn reconnects with her quickly and is given the opportunity to grow her skill by working as a social media graphic designer for her aunt s new bakery This book is so beautiful and lovely There s a lot of emphasis on family and friendship as well as navigating the changes you face as you get older Bryn s aro ace identity is mentioned repeatedly but it isnt the focus of the story It is part of her and something she s comfortable with I love the normalization of this and how its a known aspect of herself and not made into something new Its not a coming out story and there isnt too much description of what that means for her and her future but its there and I think thats great for young readers The most prominent thing about this book is the themes of self love patience and growing confidence Ugh this is such a beautiful middle grade book I would love to be 10 13 and have read this I think its perfect for young readers because its short and discusses things that middle and high schoolers are dealing with The insecurities of life and mental health as well as the progression of growing up and feeling the need to keep things to yourself not bad secrets but just not sharing personal aspects of yourself with your parents Im 24 and still am learning I dont need to share everything with my mum I also love the familial aspect of this As an aro ace person our friends and families are our priority in relationships We crave this closeness and there s some fear about losing friends to their romantic interests Super grateful this was included.
