What You Choose By Susan Cobin

Choose your own adventure book

What You ChooseSusan s similes are so unexpected and so thought provoking I found myself reading them over and over and trying to put the images together like puzzle pieces Such a compelling collection of poems 88 Five distinct sections in this debut collection One is shaped around the conceit of The man who Another is made of dream poems And the last has a handful of poems about Cobin s Jewish legacy including a very moving poem written on her son s bar mitzvah In the poem the passage the boy reads in temple is from the Noah s Ark story Some say Noah couldn t have beenthat compassionate Nobody would say thatabout you As I listen to Hebrewflow from your mouthwater seems to drench the earth. Choose your own adventure book As lovely as that passage is it is a little atypical For the most part Cobin s lines are shorter than the longest ones here They find their tension and their music in line breaks and in an absence of punctuation which allows the reader to construct sentences that reach both forwards and backwards And most of the poems are textured with rich similes In fact I think it is in the similes where the book finds its unity in the poet s imagination reaching out to find the wild connections of unexpected comparisons 88
