Book dawn’s cozy horror corner book 5 a little collection of heartfelt and enjoyable short stories the girl with no face was definitely my favourite 9781738491704 Her mouth peeled off like a worn sticker It was useless anyway There was no use for a mouth when no one wanted to hear what you had to say Usually it s hard for me to enjoy short stories I always feel like they don t give me enough I m always left wanting More of a story time to get to know the characters But this collection was brilliantly and beautifully written the words are still lingering in my mind the characters are still haunting me Every single story packs a hefty punch Bottle of Shame and The Girl with No Face are the saddest stories they both have very interesting concepts and are both impactful and thought provoking Judge of the Underworld Household centers around themes of punishment law and justice It s interesting to see the comparison between the Underworld s judgment system and the human s legal system My Future Self Once Said and Meet Your Demons are perhaps the most heart warming and hopeful. Dawn’s cozy horror cornerman review You can t help but relate to these characters A few pages a few lines is all it takes to grow attached to them If you ve ever grappeled with depression perhaps you too have experienced pain as a black hole a black hole that eats everything away It consumes everything leaves you feeling like there s no escape from it But what if a version of your future self pops up to have a conversation with you in your hour of need What if she saves your life in the process If you ve ever had insomnia or anxiety for that matter perhaps you too have found both distress and solace in the night She also wouldn t have to face the reality of her situation no one was left awake to remind her what she had to do or ask her what led her to where she was I can t get over how relatable these stories are after all who wouldn t rather deal with a demon than with humans I sure would Like the author I m also someone who finds comfort in horror stories especially if they have supernatural and fantasy elements I loved every single one of these stories I can t even pick a favourite I can t recommend this anthology enough I also must say that I love how beautiful and well curated this anthology is it s absolutely stunning I love the attention to details and the fact that there s a content warning at the very beginning and it s specified for each story so please do check that out Thank you so much to the author for sending me an arc of this anthology in exchange for an honest review 9781738491704 4. Book dawn’s cozy horror corner review 5 STARS Rounded to 5 as it deserves it I was sent the ARC of this ebook from the lovely author Dawn Chen but none of that will affect my review of it which is This was fantastic. Dawn’s cozy horror cornerman cast I ve never really connected well with short stories but the way these stories are presented as almost character studies I found myself so easily connecting and empathising with them Each story has it s own unique hook but even when that hook is literally told to us the way the story flows almost feels tragically poetic These stories often touched upon race SA and other serious topics all of which are in the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book but they re delt with in a way where the emotions are raw but are respectfully done. Book dawn’s cozy horror corner book My favourite of the stories was Judge of the Underworld Household where I could have easily read a whole 500 page book about these characters and their adventures My only minor gripe which is preventing this from being a full 5 stars is the dialogue didn t quite work for me The stories themselves were so beautifully written that it d often draw me out of the story when characters would speak outside of this style But this is truly the minorest of gripes Overall I devoured this whole work in record time and would 10 10 recommend it I can t wait for the release of Dawn Chen s full length novel From The Ghost of Ash Monroe 9781738491704 I really don t read many short stories I often don t find them satisfying But these really hit the spot for me What an impactful and creative collection. Dawn’s cozy horror cornerman review The one that I still think about is the first story which is called Bottle of Shame I don t want to spoil too much but SA is mentioned and when you add to it the green goo which is what shame looks like in this story it really made me feel unsettled The second story The Girl with no Face made me sad it s about Jia Si Ya who emmigrates from China and when she gets enrolled into new school she s given an English name against her will and slowly loses all her facial features.
