Divya Far from homebrew Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL and great for gifting to anyone aged 8 111 but especially to a school church library or your local public library I requested and received a free temporary uncorrected proof e book on Adobe Digital Editions from Capstone Stone Arch Books via NetGalley Thank you Expected publication Aug 01 2024 CanadianAuthor Multicultural 105 DIVYA FAR FROM HOME is sure to delight young readers with Divya s sweet and spunky personality and fresh perspective on the relatable theme of moving to a new place When Divya and her parents leave India to relocate half a world away Divya misses everything and everyone she knows and loves But not only that she now has to get used to living with extended family that she barely knows I love how this book features the ups and downs of living in a multi generational household and provides both a window and a mirror into Indian cultural customs Young readers will connect with Divya s mixed emotions at times doubtful and uncertain at other times curious and full of joy all the while cheering Divya on as she does her best to make a new place into home The playful illustrations add to the book s charm and the glossary discussion questions and activity guide also make it a wonderful addition to classrooms 105 You will fall in love with Divya I was immediately hooked and engaged in the writing style and the story Divya is nervous to leave India and travel to another country She moves and lives with her extended family She makes friends and settles in I loved the bulleted star list that were part of Divya s diary The list is in each chapter They sum up Divya s feelings and reflections The text got a bit too wordy at times but overall it is an engaging and enjoyable read I would have liked illustrations to help the reader visualize of the cultural references to food or the streets of Delhi There is a glossary for the many Indian words mentioned in the story but I would have liked a pronunciation guide for the names of the characters as well I think this would make a good chapter book if you need stories that feature immigrants or characters from Asia I have few books with characters form India so this will be a new book in my school library Reviewed an uncorrected proof at the Capstone website 105 Divya is a 9 yr old girl that moves from New Delhi India to the US Her parents want to help with her uncle s restaurant She is moving to a new country sharing a room with her cousin and leaving most of the things she loves behind Right away she looses her hat and her cousin goes into her things and eats her favorite potato chips Then she has to start school and school is very different in America Luckily she makes a friend at school and things start to look up Her family is supportive and help her start to feel at home.
