A hilarious collection of eighteen full colour sketches made by General White s aide de camp during the siege itself using stereotypes and caricatures to provide a light hearted look at the life of the soldiers and civilians in Ladysmith during those terrible four months I m still laughing over some of them and from a historical point of view this little book is a gem giving a vivid insight into the views of the British at the time and also into the dress of the civilians Boer and Brit and what things generally looked like at the time of my favourite historical event For all I know one of the sketches could depict the members of my own family who were in the siege or someone they knew which I find fascinating to think about I m so glad to have come across it C M Dixon
