I will draw attention to some direct military fact Autor puts enormous praise on galleasses but those 6 ships didn t deserve them They are bastard ships between galley and galleon and are not good in any of those roles They are heavy and slow under oars and not good under sails comparing to galleon They are good artillery platforms and very difficult to board and those 6 ships gave Turks hard time and caused appreciable losses but once galleys got locked and hand to hand fight start galleasses had to stop shooting as their fire will kill friend and foe indiscriminately Statement that they are main reason for the Christian victory is not completely right There is obsession with Janissaries in the western world In the nutshell they are boys forcefully taken from Christian families living in captured territories Process was called tax in blood Such boys were taken to Istanbul and kept in military barracks.

Brainwashed and made fanatically loyal to Islam in general and sultan in particular They were systematically trained as a light infantry at the time when infantry of major European powers were just a poorly organized and even worse equipped mob Well trained and equipped they were able to survive and break attack of European knights heavy cavalry killing first horses and then lumbering knights If European noblemen were willing to train their servs the same way they will have the same force Trouble was that first thing servs will fight will be noblemen Third thing I would like to mention that Spanish tercio had 3760 soldiers and officers Deploying this number of fighters on narrow galley deck is simply impossible What author had to stress is that tercio depends on combined action of pikemen or other pole weapons and musketeers harquebusiers Fighting as a trained unit and supporting each other made them much effective in the battle irrespective of unit size Good and original part of this book is description how Battle at Lepanto affected European art and spiritual life Looking at that influence one can understand how important that victory was for a whole Europe English A pivotal battle in the late middle ages A huge coalition of European powers fight the Ottoman navy to halt its conquest of the eastern Mediterranean English
