Intrigue and duplicity at its heart Nothing is ever what it seems There are twists and turns at every corner and unexpected endings Every single story kept me on my toes as I followed the motives of various characters from the woman who is still mourning the absence of her husband in The Portrait the young girl who is suspected of lying about a life threatening allergy that could kill her in Just One to the man who regrets the demise of his marriage in Memory Tap Each tale is well written testament to the author s ability to evoke suspense and create characters that are believable yet flawed They also explore the human psyche at its darkest.

Rosemary Mair s book of short stories makes for gripping reading Each tale immediately absorbs us into the world of the main protagonist Using predominantly inner dialogue with a lot of dialect her characters come alive and whether they be hero or villain we cannot help but empathise with them We learn that even the most well intentioned of us can do unwitting harm and breathe a sigh of relief when the worst does not happen or the villain is thwarted At other times the innocent are hurt and we feel devastated Throughout the book we are left in no doubt that life is rarely easy and full of accidents dilemmas and misunderstandings Sometimes in trying to fix these we may become unwittingly embroiled I particularly enjoyed Buster with its likeable young character who does not deserve his fate The suspense towards the end was palpable I also thought that Just One depicted childhood envy in a highly credible way According to Rosemary Mair few people are naturally evil and tend to blunder into harming others or themselves I will look out for of her writing in the future as she explores different avenues and themes Rosemary Mairs This book sucked me right in from the first story I love the writing The characters are believable even though the stories are surprising and in some casesshocking Each short story is unique but has the common theme of betrayal or secrecy. Pdf missing images when printing I haven t read a collection of short stories in many years It might be a dying genre My favourite author is Alice Munro and this collection is reminiscent of her great work The reader gets wrapped up in the story and there s usually a twist or surprise at the end that is so satisfying. Kindle Miss windows I recommend readers give this book a try if they have not yet enjoyed short stories It s a great way to plunge into reading great writing The stories are compelling and realistic with an intriguing mystery to each one making the reader want to learn They re very character driven and descriptive Recommended Rosemary Mairs As children one of the first things we re taught to distinguish is between good and evil right and wrong black and white To become upstanding members of society we re encouraged to have a strong moral code to fight for what s right punish wrongdoing and condemn crime When we watch movies and read books we expect the main characters to be good and others to be unequivocally bad. Miss winchester But what if they re not Though it cannot be classed strictly as a psychological thriller Rosemary Mair s Miss Win Tales of Intrigue and Deception will take you in a tailspin An anthology of twenty four absorbing short stories these dark narratives touch on themes of duplicity cunning and hidden malevolence Each introduces us to a questionable yet intriguing cast of characters An angelic ten year old whose mother hasn t spoken to her in years When she finally does will she even acknowledge it A father who wants to protect his son unsettling and thought provoking each short story in this book will have you emotionally invested in the outcome Yet it will also have you reeling as you delve into the minds of people who deceive and are deceived who trick and manipulate. Book missing They say our true colors don t come out unless we re provoked or faced with impossible choices and dashed hopes Such is true for the characters in Miss Win With a style evocative of Alice Munro Rosemary Mairs writing has its own distinct and exceptional flavor Beyond the simplicity of her prose that puts the depths of her characters at center stage there lie hints of intrigue and suspense Her deep understanding of human nature and its complexities as well as her unique perspective take us firmly into the recesses of the human psyche After completing each story we are left grappling with our usual easy acceptance of people skeptical of their possible hidden motives questioning our own moral code and wondering who we can really trust. Kindle Miss winter Hard to put down once you start you will need to take time to pause and absorb what you ve read The ambiguity of each ending makes them open to interpretation increasing the suspense and leaving you to imagine your own outcome If you enjoy drama intrigue and suspense Miss Win by Rosemary Mairs will have plot twist after plot twist and is truly a worthy and wonderful read Rosemary Mairs In this collection of short stories Rosemary Mairs has shown an incredible talent of exploring a wide range of characters and writing styles In Bad Boy Blade we are in the head of Norman the dog as he watches his owner s antics in horror whilst in In Her Sleep we follow the literal outburst of Patricia the traffic warden as she emits an endless monologue of thoughts to the reader with a fabulous twist at the story s end It s this extensive range of writing styles that drew my interest with most stories drawing the reader in within the first few paragraphs Rosemary describes the opening scenes in a succinct style so that we are immediately in the heart of the story with a clear understanding of the character s and corresponding plot line. Miss windsor The short story Miss Win which is the book s namesake is the highlight of the book A Romanian turns up in the lives of Win and her cousin Elsa with dire consequences The characterization of the three main characters is spot on and the storyline develops in such a way that leaves the reader in shock at the end Plot twists and deception are at the heart of every story but work better in some than others I loved the twists in Miss Win Scar and The Spare Room but struggled to follow the plots in some others such as Rev Ricky Waiting and Memory Tap. Book missing pieces Rosemary is meticulous in her exploration of different characters and events She adeptly explores such topics as adultery crime murder addiction jealousy and mental health with a variation of characters that we learn to love or hate Her style is fast paced which works well in this short story format An easy book to pick up and read but hard to put down I look forward with interest as to where Rosemary s writing takes her next Rosemary Mairs I received an advanced digital copy of this book courtesy of the author and publisher via Netgalley for review consideration RTC Rosemary Mairs Rosemary Mairs lives in County Antrim Northern Ireland She studied Psychology at Queen s University Belfast Her short stories have been published in anthologies and won prizes including a Society of Authors award Her second short collection is now released Miss Win Tales of Intrigue and Deception My favourite author is Alice Munro and this collection is reminiscent of her great work reviewer. Miss winslow and son Which is to say the Miss Win collection by Rosemary Mairs is fantastic These are dark almost surreal tales but with utterly believable characters I picked it up and read the whole thing in two sittings each tale here is a page turner with surprising and occasionally shocking twists Many though not all of the tales feature elderly people and if there s a throughline in the collection then it s perhaps the way society undervalues and misjudges older people and those not considered useful or productive The writing is solid though as you might expect in a collection of 24 stories some worked better for me than others I guess results will vary and everyone will have different favorites The standout was perhaps unsurprisingly the titular tale Miss Win which really showcases the author s gothic like sense of a foreboding narrative If you re a fan of short stories then this gets two thumbs up from me Even if you aren t so much into the format or maybe haven t read many in the past then I recommend this as a great place to dip your toes in the water Rosemary Mairs Miss Winn is the latest collection of short stories by Rosemary Mairs. Miss Win kindle direct I really enjoyed Rosemary Mairs s previous short story collection A Recycled Marriage so was keen to read this too Miss Winn is a solid collection of excellent short stories about intrigue and deception with a range of characters and topics such as con men murderers traffic wardens lonely old women carers an adopted boy finding his real mother and tales of luck running out as in the Pinter Genes You definitely don t want to come across the old hag in Waiting Some of my favourites Rev Ricky The Portrait Memory Tap Flick The Slick con man Bobby Dazzler adopted boy finding his mum No one will know mushroom allergy This I found interesting as my daughter has this allergy And I know how dangerous this can be Miss Winn about a conniving fraudstar and lonely old women great twist Just One peanut allergy Perfect Day wedding jealousy. Miss Win epubs air Buster gold diggers In her sleep about a traffic warden My favourite of all was Buster and Miss Winn as they both include really great twists in their tales Rosemary Mairs In a Nutshell An intriguing short story collection that matches the tagline perfectly Varied storylines layered characters insightful commentary on human behaviour Recommended This collection of twenty four stories has no introductory note But the tagline promises us Tales of Intrigue and deception and that is exactly what we get Considering how the themes are a reflection of the darker side of human nature this is not a book you would pick up to be uplifted about humankind Rather it is a great option when you want a darkly introspective work that highlights how humans aren t exactly as they appear The twenty four tales herein span varied characters and situations but they all hide a twisty secret Every story involves some or the other kind of deception but it doesn t just stick to this titular theme There is a focus on several difficult topics such as mental health abusive relationships hidden crimes addiction adultery and so on The range of human emotions and human nature on display in these tales is striking I love how the stories didn t feature hardened criminals or alcoholics or rapists despite the dark theme All main characters were ordinary people hiding extraordinary secrets. Miss winchester As is common with short fiction collections not all the stories function not the same level The endings were a mixed bag Some of the twists were foreseeable but still good some of them came out of nowhere and a few didn t make any sense at least to me My biggest struggle was with the language used in a few of the stories It seemed to be some local vernacular Perhaps an Irish dialect as the author is from N Ireland so it was very tough for me to understand The distracting lingo made me unable to focus on the actual plot Thankfully this wasn t applicable to a majority of the book Another issue again applicable only to a few of the stories was that the characters weren t very clear at the start There needed to be a better introduction of the characters so that we knew what was happening The confusion is as there is no gradual beginning to the story we dive in at the deep end of the action. EBook Miss windows 5 stars Memory Tap An old man with memory issues recollects his days with his late wife as he s struggling with his current daily routine Don t forget to read between the lines as you go through this tale It reminded me of Claire Keegan s So Late in the Day Would have been an easy five star had it answered all my questions Bobby Dazzler Never thought such a fun title would be home to such a bittersweet story Loved it Miss Win A long but deserving title story Don t want to reveal any spoilers but this fits the theme to the core Bad Boy Blade The narrator made this dark tale special Scar When your memory doesn t cooperate with you whom can you trust Loved how the uncertainty of the narrator spills out in the writing The Spare Room A bittersweet story about an old woman who is desperate to be robbed Honourable mentions with four stars Angel Whether we admit it or not we judge by appearances at least to some extent This story proves the flaw of this habit No One Will Know Having this come from the first person narration of a teenager makes it stronger I wish the foretelling at the start could have been avoided The shock would have been greater in that case Perfect Day A little guessable and yet engrossing Beautiful A portrayal of what being a vulnerable person is actually like Love the realism of this one All in all I mostly enjoyed this thought provoking reflection on the darker shades of humankind And I would have loved it even had I been comfortable with the dialect used in some of the tales. Miss Win ebook3000 A shout out to that stunning cover The minute I saw it I knew I was a goner no way I could resist getting this book I love it when indie authors invest in their book covers. Book missing Each story leaves a taste in the mouth sometimes a good taste sometimes not so good and sometimes a sense of satisfaction Miss Win the longest story in the collection is one such as this and it s one of my favourites. Literary Miss wings My favourite though is Buster and that s probably because I grew up on a small farm in Northern Ireland and I have fond memories of hosing down my footwear after feeding the coos.
