Follow Carla and Nick on their journey as peers individuals with lived experiences of mental health challenges as they openly share their story of struggle and recovery Movingly told through poetry poetic prose and Carla s artwork Take the journey with them as they explore the value of peer support a loving relationship and the power of finding a voice Through telling their story Poets and Peers makes a powerful statement about what many in the peer movement already know that we as a society often fail those who are most vulnerable that for those who have endured mental illness and trauma there is often meaning to be found in the experiences and that recovery is a possibility for anyone who receives the support they need Poets and Peers Our story of mental health recovery through love peer support and poetryI picked up Poets and Peers not knowing what fully to expect except that I m familiar with peer programs and I love poetry It s a thick book with 427 pages of poetry and prose and I almost read it in one setting If real life hadn t intervened I would ve I loved the writing styles of both Nicholas and Carla As I read through their struggles with mental health and life in general I felt like I was on a journey with them The book is separated by each author and by chapters of their lives You see them come together in the end and it is absolutely beautiful I was trapped for hours feeling the pain and love with them One exceptional thing these authors have done is drop in a note when their work was inspired by something I don t see it often with authors and I quite loved it I suggest this book if you want to dive into some emotional reading or are in the peer community I ve never been in it directly but I still loved every minute of this book Poets and Peers Our story of mental health recovery through love peer support and poetry
