History tells us little about her Now Allen paints for readers a vivid Julia and a story few will forget Julia is an engaging feisty girl a girl confronted early in childhood with the evil of her times when people accepted slavery as a way of life This experience shapes her and confronts her with the questions of whether it is right to own slaves or to believe you are superior to others because of the colour of your skin They are questions that Julia answers by following the dictates of her courageous heart I loved the first person voice Allen uses in this novel it is not only perfectly pitched.

PDF West of santillane design G Medallion Book Readers Appreciation Group It now joins the very select award winning reader recommended books at indieBRAG English West of Santillane is a beautifully written novel that draws from history s shadows a woman known to many only as a name the wife of American explorer William Clark Brook Allen brings Julia Hancock to vivid life as a cultured woman of strength and of character The first chapter of the novel where Julia meets a red headed stranger who will change the course of her life is a feast for the senses capturing the sights sounds and scents of a summer s day in Virginia in 1801 Julia is presented as a daring exuberant and intelligent nine year old already pushing at constraints laid on her by the society she lives in Yet she is also thoughtful coming to understand through the treatment of her enslaved young friends the cruelty and injustice of the system of enslavement that her family has prospered from. Historical Fiction West of santillanes Julia s insight develops as she matures and the novel shows the way women within the limits set on them by their society could try to ameliorate the worst excesses of slavery and offer some comfort to those enslaved people within their households and in Julia s case even friendship. West of Santillane booking The bulk of the novel follows Julia s life from the prelude to her engagement to William Clark to her visit to her parents four years later as an established wife and mother The challenges faced by Julia along the way are clearly shown not only within her marriage but in her journey westward from the elegant society of Fincastle to the at that stage rude frontier society of St Louis The joys and sorrows of Julia s relationship with Meriweather Lewis William Clark s friend and fellow explorer are also sympathetically explored The novel is underpinned by a solid understanding of the period and the workings of society at this time both its achievements and its failings. West of Santillane booking At heart West of Santillane is a heart felt tribute to Julia and the women like her who left behind ordered comfortable lives and alongside their husbands and families settled the American frontier English But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life and rest in unvisited tombs George Eliot Middlemarch Far too often long ago history forgets women s lives or if history remembers women at all they are remembered simply as mothers daughters wives of men In the last five hundred years of the Western World history has been kinder It provides us with the names of women their birthdates dates they married the dates they gave birth to their children the dates they buried their children and the dates of their own death but other than that we still know so little about the substance of their lives This is even the case when the woman is the mother daughter sister or wife of a famous man. Kindle West of santillanes 47.25 In West of Santillane Allen takes up the challenge to tell the story of one of these forgotten women Julia Clark the wife of the explorer William Clark Very young when she married the much older Clark and still young when she died around twelve years later after birthing five children during their marriage but immediately introduces to the reader Julia as a three dimensional engaging empathetic and believable character Julia is a wonderful narrator who carries the reader through this novel to the very end West of Santillane is a skilfully written and finely researched work of historical fiction It takes the reader back to a time when the United States of America was still in its infancy when it was not easy life for anyone Life was dangerous and heartbreaking and this reality is shown eloquently through the experiences of the intelligent and sensitive Julia who finds herself claiming her identity from beneath the shadow of William Clark her famous beloved husband He is a man who will learn a lot from his young wife Eliot speaks the truth when she says the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts What is also true is that women performed so many of these acts Allen shows Julia Clark as a remarkable woman who carved out her own story just as powerfully as men remembered by history A brilliant and wonderfully told novel Highly recommended English Sometimes life happens when you are busy making plans If Phillip Carrington asked to court her Julia Hancock had firmly made up her mind to accept Yet the two faced nature of someone who was supposed to be her friend ensured that such a thing would never come to pass She would have to look for a husband elsewhere. West of Santillane pdffiller Then without warning a marriage proposal is presented Captain William Clark an American hero has asked for her hand in marriage Hers William is no Phillip he is a grown man and a great deal older than her but age is just a number when you are in love and Julia was definitely in love. Historical Fiction West of santillanes Historical narratives frequently centre around men leaving the women of the time overlooked however their stories often prove to be even captivating than those of their male counterparts Julia Hancock wife of the renowned William Clark exemplifies this phenomenon Julia s social standing is greatly enhanced by her status as a planter s daughter in Virginia She is highly educated exceptionally well read and proficient in household management Seeking an advantageous marriage for Julia her father believes there is no better candidate than the famous William Clark even though Julia s mother feels uneasy about the significant age disparity Julia first encountered William at the age of nine and now she s excited to see him and swiftly becomes enamoured by his charisma The narrative that follows is a mix of hardship loss grief and love Julia s story has been patiently waiting to be told and Allen is the only author who can do it justice Julia is a relatable character that readers can connect with right away She possesses firm opinions a compassionate heart and an indomitable spirit Julia s story is not only captivating but it also mesmerizes and leaves the reader yearning for . West of Santillane kindle Captain William Clark is something of a national hero having jointly led a two year exploration of the Pacific with the Corps of Discovery with Meriwether Lewis The reader doesn t receive a complete understanding of the expedition s events as that would require a separate story Nonetheless the expedition and the publication of their discoveries play a significant role throughout the narrative William effortlessly handles fame but his current priorities are his courtship and marriage to Julia as well as advancing his career President Jefferson designates him as Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Louisiana Territory a role he is thrilled about though Julia s father has reservations about her living in Louisiana so far away from home William is quite a complex character for a reader to get grips with He is a loving husband and father a fair man when it comes to Indian affairs earning the readers admiration but his cruelty toward his people slaves taints his character Allen has not romanticised William in any way he is what he is a product of his time and it is wise for the reader to remember this although it is very difficult not to judge him harshly. West of Santillane ebookee One of the underlying themes in this story is the presence of slavery Even though the country had just freed itself from English rule slavery remained prevalent undermining the notion of true freedom Julia never really thought about her father s people until her actions resulted in devastating consequences for two boys she used to play with Until now she had always seen Ares and Virgi as nothing than her friends without considering their skin colour and now they have been punished for something she had done The memory of injustice and cruelty will forever be etched in the mind of a very impressionable nine year old girl Many years later she attends a speech given by abolitionist James Mitchell a Methodist minister and upon meeting him she becomes resolute in her decision to never marry a planter who owns slaves as she finds the practice utterly repulsive Despite not marrying a planter she does end up falling in love and marrying Captain William Clark who happens to be a slave owner Despite Julia s efforts to conceal her abolitionist views from her husband she cannot tolerate witnessing him administer cruel punishments William treats his horses better than he treats his slaves and this comes as a shock to both Julia and the reader It seems so out of character for William to beat his slaves His excuse for such behaviour is simple they are his to do with what he wants and this ingrained attitude so prevalent at the time leads to incredible tension in their marriage Allen skillfully uses Julia s character to reveal the distressing truth about the insignificance of a slave s life to their owners The treatment of York by William who had accompanied him on the expedition and was the first African American to cross the continent and see the Pacific is a clear illustration of the power dynamics between slave owners and their enslaved individuals Conversely Julia treats her husband s people with respect and kindness and they reciprocate in the same manner The way her relationship with Chloe was depicted was exceptionally well executed. EBook West of santillanes 47.25 This novel portrays politics as a power struggle accompanied by corruption Though not based in Washington the presence of President Jefferson resonates throughout this tale Both William and Meriwether Lewis face a two fold consequence when they are offered their positions by the President With figures like Frederick Bates involved it is wise to anticipate and outsmart political manoeuvrings but the threat comes seemingly too late for Meriwether With his rapidly declining health and Bates continued interferences Meriwether faces financial ruin Meriwether s initial strange demeanour melts away as the reader uncovers the hardships he faces which in return prompts sympathy Allen s authentic portrayal of Meriwether was flawlessly executed leaving a lasting impression on the reader. EPub West of santillanes 47.25 Yarde Book Reviews Book Promotion English I had the pleasure of reading an early copy of this book and found myself quickly lost in a good way in its pages I did not know much about the Lewis and Clark expedition and nothing of the wife of William Clark Julia Hancock It was an eye opening journey for me when the two marry and move to St Louis which is little than a muddy outpost without paved roads I felt Julia s sadness about being so far from home and I felt her indignation at William s ownership of slaves My favorite part however was the tender love story between the two This book is very moving and extremely well written and there is plenty to enjoy whether it s the Indian skirmishes the rugged travel into dense territory or Julia s challenges as she navigates marriage Excellent just excellent I received an ARC of this book and opinions are my own English Women s voices so often get lost in history and it is one of the absolute joys of historical fiction when a talented writer discovers and publishes a lost voice Julia Clark the narrator of West of Santillane is just such a woman and in the hands of award winning author Brook Allen Julia s story emerges from history to secure her role in the exploration of the American West.
