Part novel part memoir First Loves by Leon Capetanos is a wonderful read The book goes back and forth between an older man Leonidas telling the story of his first love to a young alter ego experiencing his first love Beautifully written it is a than a sentimental tale about an older man looking back at the dreams and optimism of his youth Rather it is a meditation on aging and how memory shapes how we experience the present For this reader the soul of the book is a brief vignette near the beginning of the novel about a first love named Laurie Leonidas remembers meeting her when she was young privileged and beautiful He was an idealistic aspiring poet The world was her oyster she was an American so not short of confidence For both their dreams and possibilities were limitless Magic They meet by chance later life has intervened She is still beautiful no longer that young and her dreams and possibilities are limited He is not a poet instead a screen writer just trying to please No dreams both are trying to survive rather than thrive There is no magic Whether she was ever that beautiful and whether he was ever really a poet is less important than how Leonidas understands who he once was and how he sees himself later Equally important the book captures an era when anything was possible for a young Americans galivanting around Europe Nineteen sixty one Camelot we were going to the moon Wherever he goes everything works out for our young hero He attracts beautiful women at every turn and is treated with deference by innkeepers as well as Italian and Soviet police officers That s his memory and we see how that shapes how he still experiences the world while looking back on his life.
