They needed to protect Agnes didn t they And Addie and Gerald made a difference I enjoyed this story and recommended the book The Body in the Chest An Addie Smith Mystery Book Addie and her friend Gerald the Baronet s youngest son are in her bakery in the town of Stirling Scotland in the year 1644 when a loud banging was coming from her back door When she opens the door she finds an old chest with a chopped up body inside When she screams Gerald comes running and they try to figure out who it is and why was it dropped on Addie s doorstep The only clue is a cryptic piece of paper in the dead man s hand With so many twists and turns and lots of dead ends can amateur sleuth Addie and Gerald find the murderer and solve a gruesome crime Although some of the descriptions seemed overly described I thoroughly enjoyed the intrigue and puzzle I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own The Body in the Chest An Addie Smith Mystery Book DisappointingAddie Smith is a Scottish baker in the 1600s who also likes to investigate crimes She hears a knock like a banging at the back door of her bakery When she opens the door no one is there Instead she finds an old wooden chest Addie opens the chest to find a dead man she screams her friend Gerald comes from the front of the bakery to see what the problem is He sees the chest and the body They find a cryptic note clutched in the dead man s hand which leads them on a quest to solve the mystery I so much want to like Addie and her adventures but unfortunately the writing keeps me from enjoying the books I don t like DNFing books because I always wonder if it will get better and this one was an ARC that I promised to review So I read until the end I ve read the three books in the series before this one Murder at Stirling Castle Prequel Death in the Village Book 1 and Murder at the Wedding Book 2 I keep having the same issues The over the top descriptions of everything the way that all things inanimate things are always bearing witness to whatever is happening at the time and the melodramatic reactions to small mundane things At the beginning of the books Addie is described as a Scottish bakery owner a storyteller and jokester and an amateur detective She does own a bakery and she tries her hand at detecting but I don t feel like she ever tells a story and she is not funny at all I see her as uptight nosy arrogant and pushy In this story Addie does everything on her own the authorities are never called She does get some help from her friend Gerald They move and examine the body they nose around the village asking questions and they act like they oversee everything Addie also over plays being a martyr She takes the weight of the whole world on her shoulders She feels guilty about things that don t make sense The dead body they found is a stranger but Addie feels responsible for his death and for solving the mystery I get that she is the main character but she does things that just don t make sense She should be assisting the authorities not telling them what to do and keeping secrets Ms Adams does have a way with words but she goes overboard She spends too much time describing everything from the walls to the sky to the smells in over exaggerated detail But spends no time on the clues or things that could lead to solving the mystery There are also so many inconsistencies things happen and then two sentences later they are back to the same thing happening an example the following starts a paragraph With those words hanging in the air like a whispered prayer they parted ways each carrying the other s presence with them as they ventured into the night okay get it they parted ways and ventured into the night Then four paragraphs later she starts with Mabel greeted her with a mixture of concern and curiosity her features illuminated by the soft glow of candlelight that spilled from within how did Mabel greet her when Addie had already ventured into the night I find that the writing leads to confusion and I have a hard time following the story And I feel like she is missing the opportunity to build up the clues and spend less time with the flowery language Unfortunately storyteller jokester and amateur detective. The body in the thames Stirling 1644 Addie is enjoying a day at the bakery with her close friend Gerald when a knock is heard on the door Addie opens it to find no one in sight but a chest is in front of her with a corpse inside Their only clue is a cryptic note they can t decipher Addie and Gerald search for answers but no one even knows who this stranger is They discover many secrets about the stranger but each layer they peel back only makes them confused A love triangle family secrets and dark deeds lurking in the shadows What led to the stranger s demise Was it a love triangle gone south a family feud blown out of proportion or something even sinister Find out with Addie Smith as she solves this dark mystery, The body in the chest book 2 A completely addictive cozy mystery novel set in the Scottish town of Stirling The Body in the Chest An Addie Smith Mystery Book The Body in the Chest (An Addie Smith Mystery Book).
