Madcap Serenade by Dan Kopcow is a delightful story that is half romcom and half coming of age set in 1979 Two sixteen year olds have the summer of their life when after months of separate scheming they end up in Italy Eli a young Jewish boy lands himself a spot as a tenor in a prestigious boys choir that will tour the country before singing before the pope Jane and her friend are sent to her cousin s convent as punishment for pushing women s erotic novels among her friends But once in Italy nothing is as they d expected Murder drug deals and family secrets come to surface These two acquaintances meet once again and there s no going back for either of them This was a fun book to read The dialog is witty and the story which is quite complicated moves at a fast pace Many thanks to Net Galley and to the publisher for an ARC of this novel I will be on the lookout for books by Dan Kopcow English What a delightful page turner Author Dan Kopcow serenades readers in this literary symphony An amazing range of characters Emotions run the scale from serious to fun loving to hilarious Eli s summer jaunt with the boy s choir from Long Island to Italy becomes our own Jane s trip with her friend a parallel story is a fascinating one as well Although humorous there are enough moments of suspense and tension that kept me on the edge of my seat Characters are sympathetically portrayed Kopcow manages to bring even the minor ones off the page no small feat Another favorite aspect of this novel is how every chapter is entitled with a musical term suggestive of its overall mood Brilliant If you re looking for your next zany and rip roaring read look no further I received and read an ARC copy from NetGalley English Whisked AwayReviewed in the United States on July 12 2024I read your sample pages so fast and furiously that right afterward I grabbed the whole sage savagely written book. Madcap Serenade fictionmanai The deceptively facile and casual talking author made me an almost 80 YO woman feel I was 16 again Which of course in my head I am I schlepped along with the lad that spring on Long Island dazzled by dreams of joining an elite boys choir traveling to Italy to sing for the Pope AND scoring my dream girl Not sure what had higher priority because I was now your painfully average adolescent Working a job I hated hanging out in dangerous places Then the choir gig dropped into my lap courtesy of a rich friend Off I went to a season of wonders twists danger and incalculable joy. Madcap serenades villages Same with the girl protagonist also scoping out sex drugs and tuck and roll with similar comic outcomes Hey who hasn t feared being sent to a convent for her naughty capers I am not giving away the plot That s for others to do Suffice it to say that the color and crazy situations that our dueling heroes jumped into in America and then Italy kept me race reading to the end. Madcap Serenade Humor and comedy shows And it isn t even my kind of book Oh wait This granny may have written something similarI guess in our mind we re all ageless Must be a big reason this crazy creation worked for me English Dan Kopcow writes a grand romantic comedy with Madcap Serenade In Madcap Serenade the reader is introduced to Eli and the year 1979 I wish I wasn t old enough to remember that era but I do And I was seven so my experience is so different than that of Eli He s a very interesting young man insightful curious about everything and totally socially awkward at least to him To others he s just another one that blends in the background as a misfit or socially impaired person I haven t read anything by this author before and what a hidden gem I enjoyed it so much that I have now followed the author and look for books to read I have just become a fan of Dan Kopcow Eli in his own way is intelligent and gets himself into the local boys choir a professional Choir who will soon go to Italy and sing at the Vatican Dan Kopcow created a remarkable world for Eli and setting the stage for a wondrous story Eli intends to find out about his father and his legacy so he can find out who he is and who his father was but then he finds something someone unexpected Jane She has her own issues and is also 16 American and was sent to a convent This is a fun romance and it s something many of us can t remember but the strange first love as a teenager not realizing that there is so much to life than getting in trouble I loved this story author of The Little House on Everywhere Street Eli a precocious 16 year old social misfit living on Long Island in August 1979 cons his way into a professional boys choir s Italian and Vatican tour so he can discover his missing father s legacy But when he meets his dream girl Jane and finds himself connected to an intricate murder plot involving a legendary drug he must decide if singing for the Pope is worth losing his family and first love Jane a rebellious 16 year old American girl is desperate to get back into favor with her school friends after accidentally calling a narc on them When she is sent to a Roman convent for smuggling erotic novels she realizes she must grow up fast if she s going to escape from the nuns solve her family s mystery involving a mythical drug keep clear of the authorities and declare her love for Eli Madcap SerenadeDan Kopcow s rom com novel Madcap Serenade published by Black Rose Writing is the Winner of the 2024 Maxy Silver Award in the Literary and Humor category and Winner of the 2024 Firebird Book Award for Best Romantic Comedy. Book Madcap serenade definition Thanks to Black Rose Writing for this free advanced copy English It took me a few chapters to get into this story but then I was hooked and I looked forward to returning to it every night Kopcow s novel is a fast paced rollicking good time a caper of the first degree Madcap is the perfect description It has romance a colorful cast of characters intrigue a sketchy wig wearing benefactor a mysterious cousin a convent the Vatican and a LOT of very funny bits The setting in the world of a professional boys choir gives the story a twist that will be unique for most readers Finally all the characters are extremely well drawn and the two narrators Eli and Jane are relatable and lovable Eli is a resourceful and simultaneously awkward and self assured teenager and Jane reminded me maybe too much of myself at that age I recommend this book if you re looking for a very fun and funny rom com English Kopcow weaves his wit throughout the pages of this coming of age rom com making for a delightful read I particularly enjoyed the dual narrative set up of Eli and Jane and the individual schemes that brought them to Italy The intricacies of the plot keep the story moving at a fast pace Thoroughly enjoyable English.
