In the years after the voyages of Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci European narratives of travel to foreign countries proliferated as printers translators and engravers undertook the sensationalistic description and illustration of the newly discovered territories and their inhabitants Around 1510 the Antwerp printer and engraver Jan van Doesborch was the first to print an English translation of a portion of Vespucci s account of his alleged third voyage to Brazil under the short title Of the newe landes and of the people founde by the messengers of the kynge of portygale named Emanuel Abridged and twice or thrice translated into a peculiar early modern Anglo Dutch idiolect Vespucci s account of the Brazilian cannibals blurs into Balthasar Springer s account of his travels to India in the Portuguese Armada of 1505 06 In addition to these distorted travel impressions the book further melds two texts from the medieval period a letter from our well beloved friend Prester John and also a little known treatise on the cultural geography of Christendom The Ten Christian Nations This edition of Doesborch s short book features the old spelling text alongside versions of the original illustrations that have been restored for this edition by Finnegan Matthews Several commentaries serve to situate Of the newe landes in its historical and cultural context These include a modernized and annotated version of the text a foreword and afterword by Empyrean Series co editor Jacob Siefring notes on the illustrations and a downloadable bibliography with links to the many historical documents and illustrations used by Doesborch in the making of the book Also included as appendixes are English translations of the famous mundus novus letter attributed to Amerigo Vespucci and of the portion of the Soderini letter describing his voyage to Brazil of 1501 02 Of the newe landes.
