Every Scar, A Story: Act I By Steve Johnson

I m not one to read through a book terribly fast but that wasn t the case with Steve Johnson s Every Scar A Story Act I His book made for a very enjoyable and fulfilling weekend read Steve spins a fast moving captivating and very humorous tale of his life The life of a guy whom few know but many can relate to particularly the Gen X reader or anyone familiar with the military life He ll have you going down memory lane in no time While Steve is an ordinary guy he displays extraordinary insight into the human condition and a flare for making the reader care His vignettes cover life s highs the most dramatic of tragedies and a lot of stupid things we all do and maybe wish we could have a do over Steve forthrightly turns over stones in his life that few of us would dare for fear of embarrassment While he shows himself to be a man of faith Steve doesn t smother the reader in it Instead he points out what happened in his life and how his faith got him through it When it wasn t a faith matter the wisdom of his loving comical deep thinking family of really unique characters and friends helped pave his way as well From it all he shares worthwhile pearls of wisdom or lessons learned for the reader as a thank you for reading his book A talented writer with a unique lens on life and plenty of experience from which to draw upon I find Steve Johnson to be a modern day Erma Bombeck When you finish the book you ll likely feel a little better yourself like you met a new friend for life Steve Johnson I relish the experience of reading a really good memoir or biography that invites me to consider the life story and the accompanying intricacies joys humorous moments and challenges of a man or a woman I ve never even met I m not sure why I so often care about the nuanced details of a stranger s story but a good story is a good story Thus when such a memoir happens to be written by my own father my love for the genre combined with my love for and fascination toward my own father makes for a pretty palpable concoction I laughed smiled cried and laughed some through these quickly paced vignettes ranging from roughly 1966 1992 with some notable exceptions including an old family story that was particularly devastating for me to read hear about for the first time It s difficult for me to discern how appetizing this 1st of 3 installment of Every Scar A Story would be for someone who doesn t know Steve Johnson well or at all but my gut tells me that a good story is a good story whether it s the story of Matthew McConaughey Philip Yancey Dwight D Eisenhower Tina Fey David Sedaris or my dad An outside reader might not reach my depths of appreciation for this story and its attendant characters but I would be surprised if most readers don t arrive at the last page feeling uplifted challenged and hungry for just 1 tale In the words of Alyosha in The Brothers Karamazov Remember that there s nothing higher stronger wholesome and useful in life than some good memory especially when it goes back to day of your childhood to the days of your life at home You are told a lot about your education but some beautiful sacred memory preserved since childhood is perhaps the best education at all Steve Johnson This reading experience has taught me that it is quite fun to know someone personally before reading their memoir to go back in time and watch the person you know now become What a special privilege to get to walk through these formative experiences with the man I m blessed to call my father in law and to see aspects of his personality be created revealed or enhanced in the stories of his life Can t wait for the next one Steve Johnson
