They discover a Dyson Sphere under construction by microbots but the bots are scavenging one part of the sphere to construct another And where is the civilization that designed this massive project This is cutting edge hard science fiction at its finest This broad minded far sweeping saga is both realistic and daring The reader feels that yes this is what the universe is like and what man s role in it will come to be Professor John B Rosenman Norfolk State University Braxton Thorpe and his crew of 10000 who originate from three different star systems are on a voyage of discovery in the gigantic starship Andromeda headed toward the Cold Spot in the Cosmic Microwave Background deep in the constellation of Eridanus As they approach the Keid triple star system to the delight of the Humans from Earth they stop at Keid A around which rotates the planet Vulcan home to Spock in the Star Trek television and film franchise Keid B C revolve around each other and both revolve around Keid A While exploring lifeless Vulcan Thorpe and his people discover that the planet is under attack by robotic scavengers They follow the scavengers to Keid C where they discover a Dyson Sphere under construction by microbots who seem to be scavenging one part of the sphere to construct another The Andromeda crew set about exploring this immense sphere half the size of an entire solar system Suddenly the starship is attacked by those microbots apparently seeing the starship as raw material After narrowly escaping the bots pilots in smaller spacecraft travel through the unimaginably immense sphere studying how such a structure could exist and searching for the beings who built it They discover several primitive races inside humanoid feline and reptilian who are each unaware that the other races even exist While they mount a study to learn what they can about these races they discover a hidden population of electronic uploads stemming from the original builders of the gigantic sphere As the explorers begin to assemble a model of the sphere they receive data showing the Dyson Sphere s star is about to produce a superflare that could destroy all life inside the sphere and even the Dyson Sphere itself Can the explorers survive such an event If so can they save any of the sapient races and will they succeed in removing the uploads of the sphere builders KEID A Lost Civilization The Fourth Oort Chronicle The Oort Chronicles Book 4 Served 23 years in Navy and NOAA Started as enlisted Submarine Sonar Tech selected for the Navy Enlisted Scientific Education Program and graduated from Univ of Wash in Marine Physics and Meteorology Returned to subs as Navy s first Poseidon Weapons Officer Then was Navigator and Saturation Diving Officer on both catamaran mother vessels for the DSRV and then as Officer in Charge of the Test Operations Group out of San Diego conducting deep ocean surveillance and data acquisition which forms the basis for his Cold War novel site_link Operation Ivy Bells In NOAA directed diving ops throughout the Pacific and Atlantic NOAA published and distributed Doctoral dissertation A Method for Protecting Scuba Divers from the Hazards of Contamin Served 23 years in Navy and NOAA Started as enlisted Submarine Sonar Tech selected for the Navy Enlisted Scientific Education Program and graduated from Univ of Wash in Marine Physics and Meteorology Returned to subs as Navy s first Poseidon Weapons Officer Then was Navigator and Saturation Diving Officer on both catamaran mother vessels for the DSRV and then as Officer in Charge of the Test Operations Group out of San Diego conducting deep ocean surveillance and data acquisition which forms the basis for his Cold War novel site_link Operation Ivy Bells In NOAA directed diving ops throughout the Pacific and Atlantic NOAA published and distributed Doctoral dissertation A Method for Protecting Scuba Divers from the Hazards of Contaminated Water to ports around the world NAUI diving instructor has taught over 3000 people basic and advanced SCUBA Wrote 3 diving books and the first NAUI drysuit course developed advanced curricula for mixed gas and other specialized diving modes and developed and taught a NAUI course on the Math and Physics of Advanced Diving Served 3 years in the high Arctic conducting baseline studies and 13 months at the geographic South Pole in charge of NSF atmospheric projects. EPub keidel plumbing The author of a popular book on current events published by Pelican Publishing site_link The Chicken Little Agenda De bunking Experts Lies now in a second edition as an ebook and the new Starman Jones children s book series in collaboration with Dr Frank Drake world famous director of the Carl Sagan Institute for the Study of Life in the Universe and the SETI Institute The first book in the series is site_link Starman Jones A Relativity Birthday Present Author of the Starchild Series site_link Slingshot and site_link The Starchild Compact to date Lives with his wife Jill whom he met upon his return from the South Pole in 1982 and finally married in 2011 and their twin boys in Centennial Colorado site_link I m a fan of Robert Williscroft s science fiction and Keid A Lost Civilization is solid hard core sci fi You might call this book pure science fiction Scientists astronomers and readers who love both the theoretical and practical issues of space exploration will love this detailed treatment that builds on the author s earlier Oort chronicles Anyone trying to jump into the Oort chronicles here in book 4 may find the early chapters a challenge and may reach the book s end without fully understanding all the technology and references The author does what he can to educate new readers or likely remind readers of the prior books of the detailed technology and universe references but I would expect fresh readers to struggle But those who push through will be able to follow the main story that develops even if full understanding of the backstories doesn t come I highly recommend that readers who are drawn to this book go back and start the series from the beginning. Book kid publishing The story picks up the adventures of Thorpe leader of the spaceship Andromeda on route from a solar system near to Earth by cosmic standards toward a distant spot in the universe that will no doubt find its way into a future book For now the ship s multi species crew along with eThorpe and the rest of the uploaded virtual crew members encounter a the star Keiv system where they explore and find something amazing Surrounding one of the three stars is a structure a Dyson Sphere completely enclosing the star The massive sphere is being maintained by tiny nanobots which prove to be a threat and a challenge for Thorpe s crew When they peek inside the sphere they find a remnant of the ancient Oort civilization and a lot Without spoiling anything Thorpe and his crew confront a catastrophic crisis. Science Fiction keidrich This story is all about the main plot and the technical and philosophical challenges presented I would have preferred some subplots to bring the characters to life and add human complexity to the book There is a lot of moving from point A to point B If you yearn for detailed exposition and rich detail you will find yourself in deep space without a suit But if you appreciate spartan direct storytelling and like to wonder about what lies beyond the edge of our solar system you will be enthralled by the Oort chronicles and you will like me be waiting impatiently for the next installment Robert G Williscroft KEID is an old fashioned rip snorting adventure yarn The exploration action is clearly crafted by an author who is a seasoned explorer himself The good ship Andromeda is a long range i. Keidy matos e the edge of the universe and back vessel which set off from Sol with 10000 humans aboard and by the opening of this volume has added three new sapient species to her crew The action is brisk following the principle characters as they do a nesting dolls type of exploration of a trinary star system which has the remains of a civilization on a planet orbiting star A of the trinary which seems to have been destroyed about a hundred million years ago But clues lead to star B where they watch some sort of planet busting technology in action They follow the fragment trail to where they find the rubble being used for a star enveloping Dyson Sphere being constructed around star C And then they start poking around the Dyson Sphere The technology while somewhat speculative at the engineering level does match what I know from other sources at the pure science level I can testify for example as a former museum Galaxy Guide that the stars mentioned are located and classified correctly and that the physics allowing for a manic pace on the engineering development reminiscent of E E Doc Smith is plausible The main weak point is that the characterization is a bit thin Part of it may be that you really need to read the previous volumes to pick up an affinity for the main characters but the basic weakness is that the technology is so whiz bang that the main characters can be revivified faster than they are killed off leaving the reader with no sense that these folks have any at stakeness in their adventures At least not up until the climactic but that would be a spoiler If as I do you love to wallow in gizmos and technobabble with mind rending thinking one s way out of hopeless perils with each new planetfall you will find Dr Williscroft s KEID a real treat Robert G Williscroft
