The Mythmakers: The Remarkable Fellowship of C.S. Lewis \u0026 J.R.R. Tolkien By John Hendrix

The Mythmakers epubor R Tolkien on a whim at ALA because who doesn t love Tolkien Lewis I had read a biography on the Inklings in the past and so I was familiar with their stories but even so I still learned new things in this graphic novel. The myth makers book Not only does The Mythmakers cover the biographies of these great authors it also explains the literary and historical context that they were writing in This is done in a fun way as a wizard and a lion take you on a quest through different doors to explore the ideas and the authors lives and friendship It is categorized as a children s book and I can understand why but I would recommend The Mythmakers for all ages I absolutely loved it and I will be recommending it to everyone. The Mythmakers book I loved this graphic novel about my two favorite Oxonians and the creativity shown in this goes beyond the format and is evident in the text and the imagined scenes of dialogue between the two men. The Mythmakers kindle I loved the comic panels rendering our heroes as a wizard and a lion as well as the explorations of the many sources from which these two writers drew inspiration for their work. The myth makers book I read pretty much anything I can get my hands on that covers Lewis and Tolkien and if you do as well you won t really find any new information here but the unique presentation is so terrific that you won t mind at all And if you re newer to the biographical information and lit crit on their work this would be a lovely place to start I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review English I received an advance digital copy of this novel from the publisher ABRAMS Kids via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review We write myths because our hearts were written by a Mythmaker The Mythmakers is an absolutely adorable concept that I thought suffered a bit in execution at first Emphasis on at first because this little graphic novel really grew on me Not only was it packed with interesting information about Lewis and Tolkien about their history shared and separate and about the genres they helped found out of their great love for myth this was an emotionally impactful story I didn t expect to find myself choked up by how Hendrix drew his tale to a close but I was I ended up loving this book so much that I had to preorder myself a physical copy for when it releases in September. The myth makers doctor who R Tolkien and the remarkable fellowship between the two Theirs was a brilliant friendship that actually changed the world Without their friendship Lewis never would have come to Christ and thus never would have penned any of his works There would be no Mere Christianity no Screwtape Letters no Narnia And without Lewis s encouragement Tolkien s work would have never been shared with anyone outside the four walls of his home Can you imagine a world without The Lord of the Rings That work is singlehandedly responsible the fan culture as we know it today and was unequivocally foundational to the fantasy genre that now so populates the literary landscape I ve always adored C. Kindle The mythmakers S Lewis and consider both his fiction and nonfiction essential to the shaping of my faith While I wasn t always as big a fan of Tolkien he s always had my respect and gratitude for helping to pave the way for so many of my favorite stories And in recent years I ve fallen in love with Middle earth The friendship between the two men and the entire concept of the Inklings they founded has fascinated me for as long as I ve known of it So when I saw a graphic novel about that friendship I was immediately interested I m so glad that I was approved for an early copy because I loved it so much There were a handful of typos but as this was an advance galley those will likely be corrected before publication These were mostly punctuation errors parentheses frequently facing the wrong direction quotation marks where there was no quotation and a lack of spacing between words There were also a few split lines of text that didn t properly align the end of a sentence preceding its beginning for example These were distracting as I read but again I have hopes that all of those things will be addressed before publication day rolls around. The myth makers book The art style idea and story being told were geared toward a younger audience but there was a good deal of pretty advanced vocabulary that I think might be off putting to those same younger readers I m not saying that kids aren t capable of looking up a word they don t know because they absolutely are but these words were very prevalent very early on in the book I m just not positive that the tone matched the erudite writing I very much enjoyed both but I m not sure how well they ll work for younger readers I can see a twelve year old reading this no problem But an eight year old I think they might get frustrated and put it down. Myth makers super kart gp Those two qualms were the only things that kept this book from being absolutely perfect in my opinion I loved everything about this I love that our guides were Wizard and Mr Lion and I love how well Hendrix modeled them after Tolkien and Lewis respectively I loved the deep dives into topics like what makes a myth the evolution of the the novel the foundations of genre fiction and the theology of creation These were beautifully balanced against the historical story of Lewis and Tolkien we were also getting I just adored this and can see myself revisiting it often If you have any interest in Lewis or Tolkien or the Inklings or all of the above I highly recommend this Great myths allow us to slip through the clouds of everyday life and glimpse something divine English 3. The myth makers book 5 stars I want to definitely point out that this is a mixture of prose narrative and comic panels not a straight graphic novel This is specified in the description but I m seeing a lot of general marketing just calling it a graphic novel I think the format choices worked really well and having fantastical cartoon guides helped keep the story moving while adding a bit of enchantment which definitely fits the theme of the two authors being centered I felt we got a bit bogged down by defining terminology in the first chunk of the book so I was glad when we started getting portals where we could flip to a specific page in the back for context information at our leisure instead of it breaking up the narrative I do think I learned a lot about both authors and their relationship and it inspired me to go read or reread their works One personal concern was that when sexism was brought up it felt quickly brushed over excused as a product of the time This is not to say it was the author s intention but I almost felt for my own opinion I d rather have not seen it brought up than have that be the treatment. The Mythmakers ebook The ARC is uncorrected so I expect issues with typos errors will be looked into later I m particularly interested to see what the final product looks like in full color The ARC was black and white illustrations and I actually really enjoyed them as such From the cover and couple sample illustrations it looks like a heavy blue green purple yellow color palette I appreciated the note on research and authenticity at the end and all of the compiled source citations I had already begun doing impromptu research based on questions that came up while I was reading which is a definite sign the author made me care about their story English I think this is an excellent way to tell Tolkien and Lewis stories I m not a huge biography reader so it helped to have comic panels and art throughout to better digest the content I also thought it was an interesting concept to explore deeper topics by way of portals to different pages Part of me wished this had been a straight graphic novel but it definitely is along the lines of a novel written in prose with added illustrations I recognize this book may be the perfect format for some people and it did make the experience of reading a biographical text enjoyable However I found myself to be bored and never wanting to return to the book once I put it down That s why I ultimately decided to DNF this one at 54% In spite of that I could absolutely recommend it to people interested in Tolkien and Lewis stories told in this format English

The Mythmakers: The Remarkable Fellowship of C.S. Lewis \u0026 J.R.R. Tolkien From New York Times bestselling award winning creator John Hendrix comes The Mythmakers a graphic novel biography of two literary lions C. The Mythmakers ebookee R Tolkien following the remarkable story of their friendship and creative fellowship and how each came to write their masterworks Through narrative and comic panels Hendrix chronicles Lewis and Tolkien s near idyllic childhoods then moves on to both men s horrific tour of the trenches of World War I to their first meeting at Oxford in 1929 and then the foreshadowing action and aftermath of World War II He reveals the shared story of their friendship in all its ups and downs that gave them confidence to venture beyond academic concerns fantasy wasn t considered suitable for adult reading but the domain of children shaped major story theme ideas and shifted their ideas about the potential of mythology and faith The Mythmakers also shows the camaraderie and the importance of the social literary circle of friends called the Inklings and how the friendship of these two great men fell apart and came together again Hendrix concludes describing how the writings of C. The Mythmakers epub reader R Tolkien had re enchanted the 20th century after two World Wars In writing aimed at scholars adults and young people these two tweedy academics altered the course of storytelling and embraced the concept that fantasy writing for an adult audience was an accepted form of literature The format is similar to The Faithful Spy prose interspersed with images and narrative comics The narration is often conversations between a knowledgeable wizard and a comical lion Through brisk conversation between these two friends they explain some of the bigger ideas in an approachable and entertaining way Throughout the story there are gateways that lead readers to the back matter where certain themes such as how myth fantasy evolved or the art of world building are discussed fully This device keeps the main story flowing quickly and smoothly for those readers not interested in the academic ideas behind the narrative Among the ideas covered in the narrative and back matter Tolkien s world building The Theology of Creation linking their faith to their writings The meaning of real friendship Notions of modernity and mythology The value of fantasy The power of a creative community An exploration of the different kinds of storytelling in Narnia and The Lord of the Rings both relying on the Myth as a storytelling device but differing in the use of allegory vs symbolism The creative differences of Lewis and Tolkien the high standards of Tolkien s fiction and the faster and immediate approach of Lewis s Logos vs Mythos Lewis created from images Tolkien created from language The mixing of mythologies Also included are an author s note endnotes bibliography and index The Mythmakers The Remarkable Fellowship of C. The myth makers book I m not sure I have the words to describe this book The breadth the depth the research the hybrid format the notions it presents that cause one to pause and grapple with truth and myth This is a brilliant work of art which took Hendrix years to get just right The book is flawless deep convicting and left me in tears as it ended Bravo bravo bravo Sheer brilliance on full display English John Hendrix s The Mythmakers blends prose images and narrative comics as it chronicles the lives of two literary greats C. The myth makers book R Tolkien It not only focuses on their Fellowship but also goes into details about their early lives inspirations how they were affected by fighting in WWI their friendship and many other aspects of their lives I knew I had to pick up this beauty as soon as I saw it on NetGalley because of my great love for both authors Hendrix does a wonderful job using this medium to tell his story and I loved the use of Mr Lion and The Wizard who are takes on Aslan and Gandalf Along with the information on both authors Hendrix also has what he calls Portals which discuss other information such as myth and fairy tales These sections were great extras that added to the overall experience of the book I did not read them until the end but they can also be read during your reading experience because of the pages numbers telling you where to go similar to a Choose Your Own Adventure story I highly recommend this book to fans of both authors It was an incredible read that was informative enjoyable and heartwarming at times I know I would have loved this book when I was younger and first reading from both of their fantasy worlds Definitely would love to see books like this for other fantasy authors such as L Frank Baum Lewis Carroll etc The Mythmakers will be joining my collection along with my Narnia and The Lord of the Rings series Cannot wait to see the beautiful illustrations in color Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for my ARC of this book All opinions are my own English This is a pretty amazing nonfiction graphic novel focusing on the friendship between C. The myth makers book R Tolkien While labeled as middle grade it transcends age categorization Anyone who loves these two authors regardless of age will enjoy this It s an emotional nuanced fascinating and imaginative glimpse into their friendship It s told by Gandalf and Aslan who also take small moments to define myth and fairytales The pair open with Lewis and Tolkien s childhoods then follow them through their early education and time spent as soldiers in WWI until the fateful day the two meet and bond over a shared love of Norse mythology. The myth makers book I read a black and white arc and I m going to be tempted to buy a full color edition when it releases My only nitpick with it is that the print is tiny in some places English A graphic novel that explores the lives of two of the most influential fantasy writers Sign me up The Wizard a version of Gandalf and Mr Lion a version of Aslan come across as very pedantic which drew me out of the experience at times but the book on the whole is wonderfully informative This is an approachable introduction to Lewis and Tolkien and humanises them in a way most biographies fail to do. The Mythmakers booker The section on the war was especially powerful and gives an important backdrop to the serious trauma both writers went through as young men Paired with the painful losses both experienced at a young age it s incredible how the pair managed to maintain their creative spirits. The Mythmakers ebook3000 I also really enjoyed the Portals The first one had me worried that these extra scenes would be pitched at too high a level for many readers but they provide a concise history of genre that adds important context to the spheres in which Tolkien and Lewis were writing These are especially useful for thinking about their influence and innovation as well as their long term impact The literary examples also double as a bibliography of sorts making the Portals helpful for those wanting to read core texts in the field. The Mythmakers bookworm R Tolkien as it is accessible clearly presented and supplemented by unique artwork It s factual besides the heartbreaking imagined ending but the tone isn t dry there are even some hilarious and memorable fun facts like the time the writers dressed as polar bears to a get together that wasn t even a fancy dress party and would be a great source for older school students or early university students in particular English E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusIt s easy enough to find biographies of C. The Mythmakers epub reader R Tolkien Creator of Languages and Legends and sure enough there are quite a number of books about these authors and their relationship to mythology and to other writers at the time These however tend to be rather long and academic sounding tweens and teens are not really the demographic for these books Teens and tweens are however the demographic for both Tolkien and to an increasingly lesser extent Lewis Not a lot of teens and tweens but the ones who take The Hobbit to heart get VERY serious about it I have friends who have actually read and can opine about The Silmarillion who dabble in Elvish and who were SUPER excited when the live action movies came out and were better than the 1977 Rankin Bass Hobbit My son in law is toying with the idea of a LOTR themed bathroom These fans don t necessarily know much about the author of the book and this is where The Mythmakers is a helpful resource Hendrix with his great artwork introduces a Lion representing Lewis work and a Wizard representing Tolkien and has them talk a bit in graphic style panels about myths legends and fantasy There are even points in the narrative when it is suggested that we go to later pages ala Choose Your Own Adventure books to get information on certain topics Once that intro has the reader hooked we get some straight biography of both men accompanied by pages illustrations Tolkien was born in 1892 was just a year older than my grandmother something I d never considered before and Lewis was born in 1898 They both lost their mothers had some difficulties in childhood got scholarships to Oxfors had to fight in the Great War and eventually met in 1926. EBook The mythmakers This is where the book gets interesting The two bond over a love of Norse mythology and have a group of other academics who meet up a couple of times a week to discuss stories over a pint Both men teach have home lives and dabble in writing the kind of stories that they have enjoyed reading Tolkien publishes The Hobbit in 1932 then spends a lot of time working on the Lord of the Rings series Lewis publishes The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe in 1950 The two had different opinions about what constituted a good story and also didn t necessarily share their personal lives with each other After Lewis got married without telling Tolkien the pair s relationship became even strained than it had been and the two weren t in much contact Lewis died in 1963 and Tolkien ten years later It somehow seems fair that Lewis Chronicles have or less fallen by the wayside at least in my library while Tolkien s works have seen resurgence after resurgence Lewis was much famous during his lifetime not only because of the Chronicles but also because of his Christian writing even I owned a copies of The Screwtape Letters and Mere Christianity in high school Tolkien was less well known Of course my favorite observation in the book was that Lewis was considered to be the most well read single person of the twentieth century The twenty first century is a wide open field I m not the target demographic for this but I found it fascinating Half tempted to look up William Morris 1896 The Well at the World s End which influenced both men Tolkien isn t my jam but I have friends and family who are enormous fans They will be tickled with the discussions of the lion and the wizard nod delightedly at the biographies and remember the 1960s and 70s counterculture affection for all things Middle Earth Will this book get checked out constantly at a middle school or even a high school library No Will the readers who check it out adore it Absolutely Have I pre ordered a copy for my son in law s Christmas present You bet I did English.
