Avalon towerview ballantyne N Crawford Alex Rivers and BookSirens for providing me this ARC Spy academy trials and rivalry Fey dragons magic and humans Fairytale and mythology Found family One bed Slow burn Forbidden romance Enemies to lovers Relatable FMC Hot cold MMCFirstly the world building is amazing I love the how this fey world is incorporated into the modern world and history The fairytales and mythology is used so well and made it even fun and alive I won t spoil it as that was some of my favourite part to learn about The magic system is complex but still easy to understand The world and magic system in general has some similarities to the From Blood and Ash series but I favour this way of using it mixed with the fairytales that was such a good mix The plot twist isn t to easy to see and even if I did see the cliffhanger as an option it wasn t too obvious and I loved the way it ended I love that it s happening in a gothic school setting with trials that reminds me a bit of Harry Potter and fourth wing The characters are all fun to explore well developed and does not feel immature like some books in school setting does The FMC and MMC has some amazing banter in their hate love connection The spicy scenes are very well written and I think it s the perfect balance of romance spice banter and connections C. Fantasy Avalon tower hill N Crawford The problem is banning desire doesn t douse the heat If anything it fuels it One minute you re on holiday the next you re training at a hidden fey spy academy I m not trained I m not qualified I m asthmatic If you weren t supposed to be here you d already be dead Our FMC has to suddenly navigate a new identity new friends new enemies and an old love interest who broke her heart Oh and did I mention an evil fey king is trying to destroy the world This book is for you if you love Training academies Spies and assassins Magic Found family Forbidden second chance slow burn romance One bed One horseMy favourite element was the mind reading and the distortion of reality when stuck within conjured nightmares The twist at the end has me on edge for book 2 The two quotes that are playing on repeat in my mind are I wanted to kiss you and I m not supposed to And you make it so hard for me to stay in control of myself You will destroy my self control I m scared of failing but I m also scared of succeeding C. Paranormal Avalon towers N Crawford I mean it is what it is It s entertaining but if you ve read any fae fantasy romance ever then you ve read this book I knew every single thing that was going to happen in this book before it happened There might be some minor spoilers below because I am who I am This felt like there were a lot of great ideas on the storyboard but they didn t really work together once the story was actually drafted Nothing really made sense and there was such an odd combination of concepts that didn t really work in my opinion The authors were trying to make this a fae romance with retelling elements of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table However adding these vague and ill explained snippets of King Arthur Merlin Camelot and the Knights of the Round Table into a fae fantasy set in modern day Europe was just a little all over the place In this story the fae have invaded France only Franceno other country I don t think and the FMC Nia is training to join the fae fighting division of MI 6 like James Bond There were just too much going on here. Book Avalon tower federal Another aspect of this book that was tough for me to get behind was the fact that this felt like the confusing love child of Frost and City of Thorns which are two other series that C. Avalon towery construction N Crawford wrote Don t get me wrong I liked the first books in each of those series but this felt too similar The plot is basically the same shape but a different color C. Avalon Tower kindle unlimited N Crawford s female main characters are the exact same in every book she writes from what I ve observed in the books I ve read by her I cannot speak to Alex Rivers books because this is the first I ve read by them The FMC is always a girl with either no parents or one parent The girl is always a bit overly lusty about the guy she hates villain or royalty the main characters are mates and whatever AND SCENE To be honest this formula is really starting to feel a bit repetitive As I said earlier I felt like I knew everything that was going to happen in this book before it happened Raphael and Nia are clearly some sort of fae mates I could tell at the beginning of the book that Nia is clearly the daughter of the Fey Prince Great Granddaughter of Queen Morgan She s also going to have at least 1 maybe all of the 5 fey powers which no one has had for a millennium Also separately the love interest is always too obvious in these types of books and the enemies part of the enemies to lovers was solved too easily it was all a miscommunication don t worry I was low key rooting for the evil Prince Talen to be Nia s real love interest mate They have some sort of psychic connection and I think it would make the story 100x interesting if it was for a reason The other thing that was repetitive from other series is the names of the characters Raphael is original for a fantasy fae romance but all I could think of was the damn ninja turtle Tarquin is literally straight out of arguably the most famous fae romance series of all time ACOTAR and Arzel and Freya sound a bit too much like Azriel and Feyre if ya ask me Additionally Darius is the main character in Zodiac Academy which I wouldn t normally comment on but in City of Thorns the main character is named Orion which is also a main character in Zodiac Academy Finally Morgan is the family name of the villains in this book but I m pretty sure there is a major character in City of Thorns named Morgana Are there no other names I mean I know that people have the same names but these names just feel sooo distinct to keep reusing in a book where you can literally make up any single word or name it s fantasy But I digress Anyways getting back into the plot a bit Welcome to the Academy of Virgin Spies because no one is allowed to touch each other here If ANYONE even THINKS about pecking someone on the lips they will be kicked out of this school spy mercenary group even if they are completely vital to the entire spy mission and resistance cause. EBook Avalon tower health Starting with the premise of the book I don t really get some of the world here Demi fey apparently get killed because they look like fey with their pointed ears and they re illegal So to combat this the spies who are mostly demi fey dress up like full fey How do demi fey and full fey differ in looks I was confused Additionally there was a bit too much going on between the academy aspect and the actual spy missions Nia is repeatedly described as one of the most important people in Avalon Tower because of how in demand her powers are However she s constantly being threatened with expulsion or being put in situations by her professor where another student can and will literally murder her If everyone is so loyal to the cause and cares only about defeating the Fey why are her own professors actively trying to murder her throughout the entire book especially when she s 1 of 2 people in this entire world who have a power that they NEED in order to win the war Why would the school spies kick out one of the freaking Knights of the Round Table aka Raphael the male main character and one of the leaders of this resistance and this girl who has a NECESSARY power to their cause just because they were fucking each other Make it make sense Nia is the only student cadet who is actually already going on spy missions with the full blown teams of spies yet we re also supposed to believe she s the worst student apparently but then gets a perfect score on all of her trials How does this make sense Pick a lane There s also this whole scene with a brand new character Nivene showing up at their trial in London and it was stupid Why is Nia blindly trusting Nivene who seems to be with them during their trial for no reason and only calls over Nia from the group of students for help What was with Nia and Nivene s stupid plan Their plan was to split up and take the Fey spy out on their own I don t even know how to discuss how confusing this whole sequence of events was It was a storyline aimed at making Nia look badass and clever but the actual setup of the scene was very poorly crafted Finally I will say that it s tough sometimes having two authors write a book together There was some repetition every once in awhile For example Nia asked if Merlin was Fey twice within 20 pages of each other Also at one point they were fighting for France and then at the end of the book they say For England a bunch of times WHAT COUNTRY ARE THEY FIGHTING FOR Anyways I know I m ranting but it s a fine book I didn t absolutely hate it or anything but it just doesn t feel like anything new and the plot world building felt a little jumbled and not fleshed out There s an idea here that could be a good story but this execution just wasn t for me _________________This is a very generous 3 star rating I think I have lots to say so full review to come C.
