The Psalms: A Christ-Centered Commentary, #1-4 By Christopher Ash
The book of psalms audio
Although I have many commentaries on the Psalms I recently noticed that Christopher Ash wrote and published a four volume commentary on the Psalter I ve appreciated some of Ash s other writing so I thought I should get his commentary set I ve been using it for a few weeks now I haven t read all four volumes but I have read quite a bit of the introductory volume I ve also used it to study various individual psalms If anyone else is interested in this commentary set I thought I d share a few of my thoughts here Should you purchase this set I ll answer that question after giving the pros and cons. The psalms book PROS The introductory volume consists of three parts Christ and the Psalms Doctrine and the Psalms and the Psalms throughout Christian History These essays are helpful for readers who want to learn about interpreting the Psalms in a Christ centered way as the NT teaches For those interested in interpretive history the third section gives insightful summaries of how the church fathers Reformers and modern theologians have interpreted the Psalms You ll appreciate this first volume if you have not read much about how to understand the Psalms in a Christ centered manner. The book of psalms There s an excellent chart in the first volume that gives all the NT quotes and echoes of the Psalms I appreciate how Ash utilizes the comments and insights of the church fathers and Reformers in this commentary It s nice to read helpful quotes by Augustine Clement Luther Athanasius etc Like other good commentaries on the Psalms Ash does a nice job of purposefully relating each psalm to Christ. The psalmist asaph CONS In my view one negative aspect of this commentary is that the actual commentary is too brief It reads like notes on the verses than an actual commentary The layout is like this one or two verses of the Psalm are followed by two or three short paragraphs with some reflections and notes on the verses see pic below In fact some of the commentary sections I read were brief to the point of not being overly helpful I had read a few other commentaries before Ash s When I got to his commentary I didn t learn anything new Many of Ash s notes on the Psalms consist mostly of alternate word meanings word studies and cross references. The psalms project music At the end of each chapter of the Psalm commentary Ash lists some points of reflection and response I didn t find these overly useful as many of them simply said we should pray meditate praise trust and focus on Christ Those are for sure good things but sometimes the reflections responses were a little obvious to me and I often ended up skipping that part of the commentary. The book of psalms kjv OTHER OBSERVATIONS As I read parts of Ash s commentaries I was reminded of other helpful resources on the Psalms For example I was thinking about Richard Belcher s The Messiah and the Psalms Peter Holtvluwer s Christ s Psalms Our Psalms Sidney Greidanus Preaching Christ from Psalms Robert Godfrey s Learning to Love the Psalms Mark Futato s Interpreting the Psalms and so on Thankfully there are plenty of good Christ centered resources on the Psalms Ash s commentaries especially his introductory volume fit in that category. The psalms quizlet One other observation I have is that Ash s actual commentary on the Psalms is very similar in length and content to these the Tyndale OT Commentaries on the Psalms Kidner Eric Lane s commentaries on the Psalms Dale Ralph Davis Psalm commentaries and Steven Lawson s BH commentaries on the Psalms I d also say Ash s commentary is somewhat similar to Allen Ross commentaries on the Psalms although Ross s commentary is exegetical Speaking of I should mention that Ash s commentaries on the Psalms are not particularly exegetical they don t contain detailed discussions of Hebrew grammar and syntax. The psalmist asaph CONCLUSIONS Should you spend your hard earned money and get Ash s four volume commentary on the Psalms That depends You might not need this one if you have than four or five other good commentaries on the Psalms And if you have other resources on interpreting the Psalms in a Christ centered way some of Ash s contributions will be review for you In other words you can pass on this resource if you have enough other good books on the Psalms I sort of regret purchasing this set because I already have quite a few good books audio teaching and commentaries on the Psalms. Psalms book 5 However if you don t have many commentaries on the Psalms I d say this Yes absolutely you should get this four volume set by Ash Also if you re not overly familiar with interpreting the Psalms in a Christ centered way then yes Absolutely you should get this set Or if you want you could just get the first volume which gives you helpful Christological interpretive insights into the Psalms I know this review was somewhat critical but I m hoping it s helpful for those thinking about purchasing this commentary set Endorsements can tell you how good a book is but they can t tell you if you already have others like it or if there are other similar good resources out there 9781433563881 Christopher Ash s remarkable 4 volume commentary The Psalms A Christ centered Commentary Crossway 3000 pages has just arrived Here is my endorsement for it Since the Enlightenment it has become fashionable to hyper contextualize the Psalms thereby repudiating eighteen centuries of Christ centered preaching teaching and scholarship In this magisterial commentary Christopher Ash returns to the old paths by displaying Christ and His glory in each of the 150 Psalms The Reformers and the Puritans would have loved this warm devotional and accessible work for herein Ash provides the kind of experiential practical and Christ saturated exegesis that they so dearly treasured With careful historical theological reflection and a tender pastoral heart Ash guides the people of God as they seek to better read sing meditate upon study and preach the Psalms This commentary will no doubt become a staple in the pastor s library for many years to come Joel Beeke 9781433563881
