Suspense book It has a little flavor of a heist book at the beginning but then quickly zooms out to show you the political maneuverings of various kingdoms The first few chapters see us highly invested in Arno and the desperate thespians of the White Orchid as they attempt to escape the hangman s noose The point of view then shifts largely to another country where Savina uses her engineering and magical skills to create a flying ship I found this to be a bit of where the disconnect happened I was so invested in Arno and the rest but we didn t catch up with them until quite a bit later. White orchid thai cuisine west linn I found myself caring for our motley cast of characters than I thought I might and I could see the characters having interesting depths to explore in future followups The world building was decent as well The magic system could work well as a soft magic system in the background that supports the plot and character development and so I hope the author doesn t spend too much time trying to codify it too much and instead just lets it sit a little mysterious My largest grievance is that we spend an extended time with a single POV at the beginning of the book and then confusingly jump into a new POV and then into a 10 year time skip in quick succession It was a little disorienting After that it settled in but the large shift at the beginning was quite jarring I did receive an eARC of White Orchid so perhaps some formatting could be added which would help but this was the biggest detractor of the book Overall I think the author and series have potential and I m interested enough to read the follow ups so that s a win in of itself I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily 422 I thoroughly enjoyed this book it was easily a 5 star read for me I m currently re reading it it was that good The chokehold this book had on me is insane It was a roller coaster of emotions I love how the book brought up real world events and aspects and that molded into the story The way this book put aspects of the world and made you feel like you were in it I loved the crime aspects of this book and reading Arnos story The action and crime the characters and their world and the nuance of a novel so action packed yet devious was thrilling and compelling to read I absolutely ate this book up thank you for the opportunity to be an ARC reviewer for this for free I don t give out 5 stars easily so that in itself says a lot 422 The premise is good the characters are okay the world building isn t bad.
