The Avenger of Castle Wick is book eight in the Highlander The Legends Series It was a bit of a slow start for me but once you got into it a bit the story got very interesting These two characters are at each others throats a lot of the time even when they are taken prisoner They both view the world differently and we can see these differences in how they react to different situations But they are forced to work together and are in close proximity together This causes feelings to develop I liked watching their relationship develop and adding in the historic view was very nice English This story placed in early 14th century Scotland and in the midst of a long standing family feud brings the forced proximity trope to a whole new level After fighting side by side in a battle with the English for Castle Wick Austin Merrick and Fiona Rose are captured and shackled together for their journey to York for their execution They re forced to work together to carry out their escape and in the process their defenses against one another break down Austin Merrick is he brash and a cad a rogue a player Yes but he s the leader of his clan and army and can t afford to be distracted But is that truly all there is to him Fiona is the fearless leader of her own clan a mere shadow of what it used to be She s fighting hard for respect and recognition as a skilled female warrior and head of her army She s never thought much about romance since she s been occupied trying to earn her father s acceptance since the day she was born Now he s deceased but she hasn t stopped battling for acceptance from the patriarchy Trying to earn their fathers approval since childhood is an issue that both Austin and Fiona share and that keeps them on the defensive making their coupling both undesirable and forbidden. The avenger of castle wick book 2 As in all of Ms Ruger s stories this one is lush with history descriptive prose and inner musings And of course my favorite of all her features the beautiful monologues She makes the romance of her genre adventurous and her characters nuanced understandable and lovable no matter how rough and rugged they needed to be English I thought that the book was entertaining in the action department Fiona and Austin team held strong as long as they could to fight for what they felt was right for their people as well as Robert the Bruce The fun parts of the story were when Austin unknowingly seemed to find a way to get under Fiona s skin Ahh love The romance was one that wonderfully written I enjoyed the romance and I enjoyed reading the book Until next time my fellow readers Read on English I have always held a love of historical romances set in Scotland especially if they are set in the time of Robert the Bruce and this one did not disappoint While it contains many of the trope you would expect particularly feuding clan enemies to lovers it is delivered in a refreshing way Your typical firey Scottish lass character is a true badass clan chief who can and will wield a sword at the front of her meager army And the brash highlander who falls for her has layers which I appreciate And to top it all off the use of Scots language is really well done and does not feel forced it is easy enough to read if you don t know Scots but is than just the odd ken or ye thrown in for fun I very much appreciated the inclusion of the language the English tried to destroy but failed and it fits so well with the timing of the book. When a Highlands castle is besieged by Scottish armies loyal to the English crown the call to war is answered by many advocates of Scots freedom Austin Merrick a skilled and respected lieutenant of his father s army rises to the challenge as does Fiona Rose and her ragtag group of soldiers what remains of the Roses the Merricks longtime enemy in the north Austin scoffs at Fiona s presence on the battlefield deeming it inappropriate for a woman to fight while proud Fiona challenges his prejudice and proves her worth in combat However in the chaos of battle both Austin and Fiona are captured and find themselves imprisoned together intensifying the conflict between them at the same time flames of desire are kindled The pair escapes embarking on a journey through the harsh Scottish Highlands forced to rely on each other for survival Though possessed of a warrior s spirit Fiona knows that same strength acts as a shield protecting her from the vulnerability of emotional entanglements Matters of the heart are a potential source of weakness which she than most cannot afford to entertain Likewise Austin grapples with conflicting loyalties between his duty to his father and kin and his growing feelings for Fiona an enemy to the Merricks Despite Austin and Fiona s mutual reluctance to surrender to longing neither proves to be stronger than their desire Will they sacrifice love for the sake of clan loyalty or will they defy the odds and challenge fate to forge a new future for themselves The Avenger of Castle Wick Highlander The Legends 8 I need of Austin and Fiona I was reading and then it was the end It was a complete story but I do wish I had I ve always loved an enemy to lovers story and this one did not disappoint Very well written main and side characters The story flows at a good pace and was able to hold my attention throughout I look forward to the next book in the series English I know I say this about all of Rebecca Ruger s books but by far this is one of favorites I may even say that every time I read a Rebecca Ruger book Getting to know both Austin and Fiona has been a great adventure Once again Rebecca s storytelling has made me feel like I was right there experiencing everything the characters did Her descriptions of the surroundings and emotions are amazing I even shed a few tears with this one As always I look forward to the next adventure English best in seriesI ve read the series to date and this is my favorite the story of Austin and Fiona and their enemies to lovers The details and character development were excellent in the plot. Book The Avenger of Castle wicker the story pulled me in from the get go I loved that Fiona was the leader of her clan and presented as a strong intelligent woman and Austin what to say except dreamy and respectful of women in general. The Avenger of Castle wickstrom This is a definite read and you don t need to read the priors for this book however they were all great reads English I don t know how she does it but another great book This book where do I start great story well developed characters wonderful world building all came together and pulled me in until the end I m so happy that I got the opportunity to read an arc of this book I am happy to give this review English Adventure in the HighlandsBeing imprisoned together forces a truce among clan rivalry between Austin and Fiona Their eventual love for one another is fraught with obstacles and danger as the story progresses into an adventure you will not forget I really loved the historical nature of this story and the strong complex characters, Book The Avenger of Castle wickr I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily leave this review English.
