The sugarmill hanley Then there s Maxwell an excommunicated Devourer with an insatiable appetite a troubled past and a bit of a drug problem who takes it upon himself to track Jolene so he may have a Sugar of his own But stealing Jolene won t heal the wounds in his heart or cover the scars of his childhood as a Devourer THE SUGAR IS AN EXTREME HORROR NOVEL PLEASE READ WITH CAUTION The Sugar
This has a very unique premise and is a solid entry in the dystopian extreme horror genre it s also not too long and is a very easy quick read as the plot moves quickly and it is not overly descriptive slow The characters were well developed and sympathetic and their choices made sense something a lot of EH writers seem to overlook for the sake of furthering the violence The violence was contextualized and didn t feel random The world building was very interesting and I liked getting details as I read My only criticism is that the writing seems a bit raw and could have used a final read through it reads like a stream of consciousness like the author needed to get it all out on the page which I appreciate but it does come off as a first draft All in all I am very excited to see what other ideas this author has moving forward always great to find a creative mind and the concept was truly unique The Sugar This book started out very strong There were things I really liked and some things I found annoying I really liked some of the stylistic choices such as including biblical references I also liked the oddly formatted inner thoughts we saw in parentheses other reviewers didn t like this but I did It was neat and different I did find the violence gross and entertaining yet somehow not over the top The premise itself was amazing and unique I loved the overall themes of classism and addiction I disliked the many spelling and grammatical errors I found throughout such as Daniel Steel instead of Danielle Steele forgetting to capitalize a name once using the wrong form of your etc it was jarring and felt like reading a draft As other reviewers mentioned the ending felt rushed Overall this might have been better as a well developed short story Like I said great concept A few things needed work I would still recommend to others The Sugar The Sugar by Judy Ramirez is a refreshingly unique story You can t choose the family you re born into and some of us are luckier than others The novel delves into the unfortunate life of Jolene and her family known as Sugars who are imprisoned and bred as cattle preyed upon by the sub human cannibalistic sect of society called Devourers When Jolene manages to escape the compound she learns that she is an extremely rare type of Sugar putting her in even greater danger Judy writes a gripping narrative taking readers on a thrilling journey as Jolene navigates this unfamiliar world constantly looking over her shoulder and fighting for survival.
