The lakes of southern hollow book summary A graduate from the creative writing program at the University of Arkansas Unbridled Books published his third novel The Legend of the Albino Farm in 2017 Lauren Groff chose his novella Sandy and Wayne as the inaugural Knickerbocker Prize winner and it was published by Dock Street Press His collection Some Kinds of Love Stories won the 2012 Juniper Prize in fiction and was published by the University of Massachusetts Press in 2013 His novel Morkan s Quarry and its sequel The Teeth of the Souls were published by Moon City Press His fiction has won two fellowships from the Mississippi Arts Commission and one from the Arkansas Arts Council Portions of Morkan s Quarry first appeared in Missouri Review Ontario Review and South Carolina Review A novella length excerpt was a finalist for the Pirate s Alley Faulkner Society William Faulkner Wisdom Award for the Best Novella Yates has published short stories in TriQuarterly Southwest Review Turnstile Western Humanities Review Laurel Review Chariton Review Valley Voices and many other journals He is associate director marketing director at University Press of Mississippi in Jackson and lives in Flowood with his wife Tammy site_link Casey Tyndall and Devon kids from Southern Hollow subdivision have been falling in and out of love with each other and always at the wrong time It s a Thursday night in September 2019 their senior year Anything seems possible And Casey s band New Wave Vultures packs them in on teen night at the Cedar Shake a club on the square in downtown Springfield Missouri While all three feel trapped in the Ozarks the coming pandemic is about to show them the grinding limits of true confinement and the power of music love friendship and courage The Lakes of Southern HollowThe main reason I selected this novel is because it is set in the town where I live Springfield Missouri I have met the author who has attended conferences here in the Ozarks because the academic press where he works has published some titles about the region Having grown up in Springfield he is very familiar with its history its landmarks etc He drops the proper place names or close enough equivalents to make the story s setting recognizable to readers familiar with the town in the southwest part of the state. Book the lakes of southern hollow tx Yates is obviously a fan of musicians and they play prominent roles in this novel He seems to be quite interested in the technical side of music composing performing recording and so forth The drama and disfunction surrounding bands and musicians is a strong thread running throughout the novel For the most part he portrays this subculture fairly accurately although at one point he has a teenager in 2019 using the word grooving That s a stretch He also plays a little loose with narrative point of view in a few places even switching in one paragraph from second to first person Some of his metaphors don t exactly hit the mark for me such as this one Her eyes are the soft brown of a minister s shoe leather There are some passages that made me laugh out loud like this one Casey s been showering in the garage sink hair pits and cracks But Mom complains she s sporting rest home smell Eau de Coot Ha All in all this is a good novel that deals with themes like mental illness emotional and physical abuse sexual identity evangelical Christianity family dynamics and the COVID pandemic Yates is a good storyteller and the narrative moves along at a good pace The characters are believable and interesting not one dimensional Yates hasn t lived in the Ozarks for almost 30 years but he clearly is still nostalgic about the region Paperback Emotional evocative read Very interesting to see Steve move from the historical fiction track of all of his other books Renders the pandemic in a way that captures the fear of that time Good read Paperback
