The West Breaks Away (Guardian of Empire Book 2) By William Kelso
Breakaway presents another world
Three brothers Three fates One terrible secret Spring 261 AD Following the capture of emperor Valerian at Edessa in Syria crisis grips the Roman empire Usurpers compete for the imperial throne Barbarians are massing on the frontiers while plague and growing economic woes have shaken the empire to its core In the western provinces of Gaul Germany Britain and Spain Postumus a usurper takes the imperial title and promises a better future An end to Frankish and Saxon raids that have become a growing menace On the isle of Vectis of the southern coast of Britain Veda s aimless life of idle pleasure has come to an end as he finds new purpose and employment An important job that will soon lead Veda on a mission far beyond Rome s Rhine frontier and into the vast and uncharted eastern forests where the free barbarian tribes dwell A vital mission for the security of the empire A journey full of danger where it is not clear who is friend or foe Travelling into the heart of free Germany Veda soon begins to realise that he has a chance to prove that screw ups like himself can become hero s too The West Breaks Away Guardian of Empire Book 2 The book 2nd in the Guardian of Empire series a Roman historical fiction that follows the exploits of 3 brothers Corbulo Veda Munatius direct descendants of the characters of the author s Veteran of Rome Soldier of the Republic series 261 AD As the Roman Empire divided and usurpers competed for the imperial throne in the western provinces of Britain the idle life of Veda the middle brother changed overnight Newly employed by a banking enterprise he journeyed far beyond Rome s Rhine frontier into the vast and uncharted eastern forests As the empire s security depends on the success of this mission he discovers this is his last chance to prove himself but the journey is full of danger where it is difficult to differentiate foe and friend and barbarians dwell on every crook and cranny After reading book 1 I knew the author won t disappoint me Once again he had beautifully created a gripping story based on the actual historical events and people The plot was tightly packed and the pacing never slowed down with lots of mysteries betrayals revelations and gory battle scenes it successfully hooked me the till last 2 3 into the book another POV is added which makes it fascinating Unlike the first book this one follows Veda s story it s through his eye we see the story unfolding in the Western frontier His transition from a failure and loser to a wise and responsible man was meticulously written Other characters like his sister Cata her slave Caledonus the Frisian captain Abbe his daughter Jorina Nerthus s high priestess Ganna and the Frankish outlaw Ignatz are worth mentioning Although the books end abruptly it successfully delivers Vela s side of the story till now Now I m curious to see how William gonna ties up all the missing links in his next book and get the brothers reunited. The West Breaks awayness Overall The West of Breaks Away was a wonderful read Don t judge the book by its cover The Fans of S J A Turney Steven A Mckay and Sam Taw surely gonna love this one Highly recommended 3.
