Fifteen years ago Aaron s younger brother mysteriously disappeared from his bedroom without a trace and Aaron hasn t been home since He thought that he d moved on with his life But when his mother suddenly dies he finds himself back in his childhood hometown to attend the funeral and to see to the estate Any slim hopes of reliving fond childhood memories evaporate as Aaron discovers something in his old room that shakes not only his beliefs about what happened to his brother but his grip on reality In the hungry darkness a shadow as old as time itself has been waiting for his return And its wait is nearly over In the Shadows of ChildrenEver since I read Burden Kansas I ve been a fan of J Alan Ryker I m so glad to see him back on the writing scene When Aaron s mother dies he goes back home for the first time in fifteen years It s not long before Aaron wants to run away again He didn t really run away he traveled across the country for college or at least that s what he tells himself The truth is Aaron s little brother disappeared when he was younger and to avoid thinking about it he just ran Now that he s back home he cannot escape thinking about his brother and wondering what happened When Aaron steps back into his old bedroom some memories begin to return And when he opens his bedroom closet his life changes forever What happened to Aaron s brother What did Aaron see in his closet You ll have to read this to find out Reading this brought me back to the time when I was reading Ryker s work regularly His work never failed to hit me in the gut Something about his characters just rings true I can relate to them well most of them anyway and you probably will too The emotions here were a roller coaster of ups and downs confusion and clarity By the end the roller coaster came to screeching halt and I found myself wrung out I need This novella was previously released by a now defunct small press I am hoping this release means Ryker is working on something new Dare I hope for a sequel to this story You know I am So how bout it Mr Ryker Don t leave me hanging here If you re looking for a new voice in the horror genre or maybe a freshly resurrected voice look no further because J Alan Ryker is here Highly recommended especially to fans of horror novellas ARC from the author In the Shadows of Children
