Charybdis slime Charybdis by Suzanne Craig Whytock is the tale of a woman who is intrigued by an old book of poetry she finds in an antique market intertwined with the story of that poet The modern character Greta is invested in solving the mystery surrounding this mostly unknown Victorian era poet while dealing with her own relationship and family troubles The poet Louisa s story is told in the language of her times enabling the reader to be equally immersed in that tale The plot is gripping filled with twists and seamless transitions between the past and present with Gothic tones reference to Charybdis of Greek mythology and settings in both Ontario and Quebec Canada This story was hard to put down and everything ties together in a satisfying though surprising way Highly recommend English A good fast paced gothic novel of intrigue and mystery I enjoyed reading it English A spellbinding Gothic tale of two women from different centuries Charybdis will keep you glued to the pages This well written story of lives that intertwine the past and present has everything you want for a late night read ghosts horror and edge of your seat suspense. Charybdis ship Told from two points of view and two time periods Charybdis follows Greta a literature student researching a late 19th century poet and Louisa Duberger the woman who wrote two very different books of verse The alternating points of view not only give the reader insight into the dead poet s life but also add suspense as the reader is left with questions at the end of each chapter. Charybdis tensura The book begins with Greta Randall rethinking both her personal and academic future Greta s visit to an antique market three years ago was a major turning point in her life On that fateful day she met her future fiance the owner s son and found a rare collection of poetry by a Canadian poet who became a recluse Greta plans to compare the collection she found a series of bright nature poetry to a later book a dark and disturbing body of work She hopes to write her PhD thesis about Louisa and discuss the reason for the change in mood When she is unable to learn about Louisa s life Greta is ready to abandon her work until her professor suggests she visit the Toronto library to get her hands on the original book At the library she discovers that Matthew Shepherd a descendant of the Duberger s has been reading the poetry collection When Matthew invites her to stay at Champs Blancs the old manor where Louisa lived Greta is excited for the opportunity to do some hands on research about the poet Little does she know that her attempt to uncover the truth about Louisa s life will lead to the revelation of family secrets in the present day. Charybdis ebook free download The mystery is unravelled through a variety of forms of writing making the reading all the interesting Letters from the past and Louisa s diary fill in the backstory An added bonus to Charybdis is the vivid poetry within written by the author s aunt Margaret Randall As well the references to Homer s poem The Odyssey and the imagery Louisa pulls from it add to the atmosphere of this Gothic novel. Charybdis locomotive A haunting literary mystery of dark romance with supernatural elements Charybdis will leave you wondering what was real and what was fiction English For her doctoral dissertation Greta Randall plans to research the little known Victorian poet Louisa Duberger Greta s goal is to uncover the mystery of Louisa s life and why her first book of poetry was bubbly and cheerful and her second a few years later grim and morose with a dark focus on death What unfolds is a dual timeline story that flips back and forth between Greta s current day research efforts and the events of Louisa s life from 1890 1892. Charybdis real I loved the Gothic feel of Louisa s timeline and narrative Her character faces the most disturbing challenges of the two though things do get dangerous for Greta toward the end Louisa s story was compelling partly because of how helpless she was to exert control over her life especially once events turned against her and the downhill tumble began. Charybdis report back to rachel There are some twists and turns that add to the creepy atmosphere of this Gothic horror The characters Greta and Louisa as well as secondary characters especially Greta s boyfriend Julian are wonderfully distinct their sensibilities and language appropriate for each timeline. Charybdis reddit The pace is just right and I read this page turner in a couple of days Highly recommended to fans of Gothic horror twisted tales and dual timelines An excellent read English This short book is both a dual timeline gothic thriller and an exercise in metafiction Alternate sections present Louisa s harrowing story in diary form set in 1890s Canada and an account of a present day student of literature doing research into the work of an obscure poet The diary entries build relentlessly to terrible events in Louisa s life The reader knows about them which creates tension as Greta s research moves her toward discovery and danger. Charybdis kaos The ending seems straightforward but may be understood in a way that frays into ambiguity I love stories that contain some uncertainty they linger in the memory for that very reason English
