With a little bit of history thrown in This was the first book I ve read by this author but won t be the last Martha Hall Kelly The Martha s Vineyard Beach and Book ClubThis book starts in 2016 when a young woman flew from California to Martha s Vineyard to explore a connection between a famous artist and her recently deceased mother The artist told the young woman a story from 1942 during World War II. The martha's vineyard beach and book clubground Two sisters and their indomitable grandmother were forced to work their beachside farm alone after their brother left to fight in the war The girls decided to brighten their lives by starting a book club like the wealthier visitors to the island Then one of the girls found an unconscious man on the beach who turned out to be a deserter from a German submarine off the coast They decided to hide him from the military men on the island This story gives the reader a taste of life during the that war Able bodied men went off to war leaving their family members to support themselves. The Martha s Vineyard Beach and Book club was a very enjoyable novel Most World War II historical fiction novels are set in Europe It was interesting to read a very well researched and informative novel set on Martha s Vineyard It is a very common tool of authors to switch back and forth between characters and time periods often the two story lines seem incompatible Not the case here Although I enjoyed the story set in the 40 s than the modern counterpart both threads were interesting and believable. The martha's vineyard beach and book cluba reviews I think this novel was clever unique and unpredictable Its fast pace held my interest and the sympathetic characters held my heart I know the readers in my book club would enjoy this novel Martha Hall Kelly The Martha s Vineyard Beach and Book ClubBy Martha Hall KellyPub Date January 1 2025Publisher Random House Publishing Group BallantineDon t forget to read the author notes which shows Kelly s ties to Martha Vineyard A dual time line told in 1942 and present day 2024 A story about two sisters during World War II and their love of books while they create a wartime book club. The martha's vineyard beach and book clubhouse nyc More please of historical fictions with bookish subplots More please of wartime historicals set in North America More please of anything set in a seaside towns Fans of Madeline Martin Kate Quinn and Jennifer Robson are sure to enjoy My thanks to the publisher Ballantine Books and Penguin Random House Canada for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review Martha Hall Kelly Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC A heartwarming story of 2 sisters and a best friend on MV during WWII Story began in 2016 but went to 1942 for most of the story except for a brief glimpse back to 2016 a few times during the novel and then of course at the end Briar and Cadence are sisters living with their grandmother Ginny on their family farm in Martha s Vineyard Cadence s best friend and girlfriend of her brother Tom Bess also lives with them after a fallout with her high society mother They all work the farm to make ends meet Tom goes off to war as an Army Ranger Briar16 also works for the US government s model project where they make models of allied and enemy war planes ships etc There is a military presence on the island All of the girls interact with various military personnel As the story develops Cadence and Bess form a book club reading the books discarded by the rich folk on the Island They then plan to give books to the troops which they enjoy reading I loved the history of MV during WWII as well as the author s relationship to the island and how she used various experiences members of her family really had as she writes the book The book started off slowly and was somewhat predictable It is a heartwarming story of the main characters as well as Mari and Elizabeth s relationship I thoroughly enjoyed reading it A few things I found while reading First Goodreads synopsis has the second sister s name as Ginny That s the grandmother s name Secondly during the current time in the book it s mentioned that a bar serves two for one gimlets That technically would be a happy hour special and in 2016 there was no happy hour in Massachusetts Martha Hall Kelly Set in the 1940s during World War II Cadence is a local journalist who writes articles for the town paper capturing the daily happenings in her community Meanwhile Briar devotes her time to investigating a mysterious man presumed to be a German spy who washed ashore under suspicious circumstances As tensions rise Briar s search for the truth uncovers than she expected adding layers of intrigue and danger to this wartime narrative.
