Summer season at sandy covese park Smarting from a messy breakup the main character Julia runs away from her former life to work for the summer as a waitress at Sandy Coves Holiday Camp The story is told from multiple point of views of the different staff members which I thought worked really well The characters were well portrayed all very different and interesting Julia was likeable quite feisty at times and was certainly no pushover Then there s Heaven her room mate a wonderfully quirky chalet maid who prefers meditation to cleaning And don t forget Juan the cocky sports organiser with a penchant for shortening women s names and Mike the secretive entertainment manager whose libido is in competition with Juans Plus Francis the gentle soux chef and the squabbling naive twins who prefer making eyes at the male members of staff to working This wonderfully ecletic cast of characters are thrown together with riveting and often hilarious consequences I loved all of the characters even the dubious ones But my favourites were Julia and Kevin the overly observant pot washer I loved the setting I ve not read any books set in a holiday camp before It reminded me of a cross between Hi De Hi and Dirty Dancing It was a fun read lots of funny moments which had me snorting with laughter I liked the themes of female empowerment and revenge running throughout this book The antics of some of the male characters were terrible but will they get their come uppance You ll have to read it to find out Ms Northwood has successfully dipped her pen into different genres fun story a study of the vagaries of people in the working environment of a holiday camp There s never a dull moment from affairs between staff and holidaymakers a serial philanderer a thief a peeping tom like character lazy immature twin girls and confusing relationship miscommunications The characters are well drawn and entertaining I really couldn t stand Juan who everyone seems to fall in lust with And Julia s room mate Heaven is a funny subsidiary character with her hippy tendencies and coven.
