Nghi Vo is the author of the acclaimed novellas The Empress of Salt and Fortune and When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain Born in Illinois she now lives on the shores of Lake Michigan She believes in the ritual of lipstick the power of stories and the right to change your mind The Chosen and the Beautiful is her debut novel. Uncanny Magazine Issue 57aa I liked this issue a lot the Helms and Valdes stories and particularly the Vo were my favorites The Drnov ek Zorko essay also gave me food for thought Fantasy Gay and Lesbian MORE FICTIONAfflictions of the New Age by Katherine EwellThe confusion I think is the best part of this story The reluctance to let go off life until you no longer know what you re doing in the first place Sad 4 The Robot by Lavie TidharWe follow the Robot for five hundred years and during that time so many things happen to the humans One thing is for sure tho it s started with wars Humans love to destroy each other ain t we 3The God Descendant by Amanda HelmsBasically if one stops rising and one stops falling they ll meet in the middle hovering 2 Stitched to Skin like Family Is by Nghi VoThis girl can hear the echo of an event when she touched the fabric It s interesting concept The timeline of the story is a bit confusing tho Wild west 3The Best Ever Cosplay of Whistle and Midnight by Annalee NewitzRedshift Shiftred by Parlei Rivi reA Magical Correspondence to the Tune of Heartstrings by Valerie Valdes Fantasy Gay and Lesbian 4. Fantasy Uncanny Magazine Issue 576 5 stars Stitched to Skin Like Family Is by Nghi Vo A gifted seamstress travels through America the feel I got was somewhere between late 1800s and the Great Depression searching for her lost brother She has a special gift she can hear the fabric speak that helps her along her journey Propulsive and eminently readable Just disorienting enough to give an air of a larger world Highly recommended. Fantasy Uncanny Magazine Issue 579 summer The Robot by Lavie Tidhar A robot outlives generations of owners war and despair as it searches for purpose and connection This has the feel of a classic to it The time jumps were done well and the robot very relatable I would argue that it falls in the cozy catastrophe genre Highly recommended Favorite of the issue. Uncanny Magazine Issue 57jr Afflictions of the New Age by Katherine Ewell In a world where longevity is attainable and dementia has been cured a 279 yo woman lives unstuck in time perfect recall but almost no sense of order to her life She must navigate an interesting relationship when a rather unique caretaker comes to be with her Interesting spin on dementia and good twist Beyond the set up it s barely SFF Recommended. Uncanny Magazine Issue 57ii The Best Ever Cosplay of Whistle and Midnight by Annalee Newitz In a world where a variety of animals have established their sentience a group of worms navigate the complexities of joining an inter species cosplay competition A fun and funny story that examines the unique sense of community that occurs in the cosplaying community Lots of fun but not being a cosplayer myself I did get lost occasionally Recommended. Uncanny Magazine Issue 57a wood A Magical Correspondence to the Tune of Heartstrings by Valerie Valdes A hardworking craftswoman juggles dealing with her family courting her crush taking a correspondence course on beginner witchcraft and keeping the family business afloat Fun and sweet The stakes are never too high so it may fall into the cozy sub genre all the rage these days Highly recommended. Book Uncanny Magazine Issue 57 pdf Redshift Shiftred by Parlei Rivi re A munitions engineer gets hooked on Neutral a time bending drug that leads to great work coupled with significant addiction One of the experimental in this set The experimental piece never really bothered me but the story as a whole didn t catch me Perhaps too much of a downer at least for the majority of it. Fantasy Uncanny Magazine Issue 57 pdf The God Desendant by Amanda Helm The god of falling continues to fall no matter what they think about it As is typical for Uncanny the last fiction slot is reserved for a shorter and experimental piece As a whole I have a ceiling of enjoyment for these pieces Both characteristics tend to serve as barriers to allowing a reader to easily connect with the work But this is a rare exception It s a piece that doesn t take itself too seriously but still has a wonderfully evocative ending Highly recommended Fantasy Gay and Lesbian I love this magazine I ve discovered new authors I love reading uncanny Fantasy Gay and Lesbian This was a solid issue My favorite story was A Magical Correspondence to the Tune of Heartstrings by Valerie Valdez and I also really enjoyed John Scalzi s essay on Godzilla Having read Neom and Central Station last year it was also fun to read The Robot by Lavie Tidhar which is set in that same universe though as a story it was just okay Fantasy Gay and Lesbian
