The mires literature fiction pdf Any book about refugees with a blurb on the cover by Behrouz Boochani is a book highly recommended A surprising gem Literature Fiction With environmental devastation war hostility towards refugees and the rise of white supremacism screaming at us in our newsfeeds many of us seek the balm of connection to Country and Indigenous wisdom to find respite from the catastrophic problems created by capitalism and colonialism Tina Makereti explores many of these topics and provides that balm with her quiet beautiful book The Mires The Mires is set on a swamp in Kapiti on the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand A small neighbourhood is built on top of the swamp and its inhabitants coexist uneasily Keri is a warm M ori woman recovering from domestic violence who struggles to get food on the plates of her lively four year old Walty and her mysterious teenage daughter Wairere who hears the voices of her ancestors and has the gift of sight. Book The mireslush Next door live Sera Adam and their little one Aliana They are refugees from an ecological disaster in Europe On the other side is Janet a white New Zealander also a survivor of domestic violence with fixed ideas about the way people should be She lives with her son Conor a lost and recently radicalised young man who is exhibiting strange secretive behaviour. The Mires epubs air The novel begins with a quiet humble dignity and builds to a mythic and catastrophic finale It is a small book about women family the suburbs community and outsiders but also a large book about environmental disaster racism and terrorism Keri and Sera begin a sweet tentative friendship forged by their mutual empathy understanding of suffering and the need to connect Their children provide a bridge for their two worlds to come together and from their connection a sense of community begins to grow. Book The miresball By contrast Conor operates in isolation next door spending his days online connecting with extremist right wing groups and terrorising woman and migrants with trolling and hate speech His mother and teenage Wairere observe his hostility and secretive behaviour with a growing unease and sense of foreboding The Mires is Indigenous literature written with a deep spiritual connection to Country and ancestors Informed by the recent Christchurch massacres and the alarming rise of white extremism around the world it is a courageous book that shines a light on the darkest human behaviour and shows how the best of humanity can emerge from devastation and triumph over hatred and violence. Kindle the message bible This is a very internal book Its beautifully drawn characters are all quiet people swamped by trauma and trying to keep their heads above water Within this interiority we sense that each one of them longs for understanding and connection and the overarching message of the book is that when we seek community we grow stronger This is a book for and about the little people who struggle It is a beautiful respite from the arrogance and ego of Western capitalism the patriarchy and modern politics It is a book that cares and a book that matters The Mires Tina MakeretiPublisher Ultimo PressISBN 9781761153693Format PaperbackPages 320ppPrice 34. Book The mireslush 99Publication date July 2024Review for Artshub Literature Fiction Very glad I read this book Fans of swamps and Papat nuku should read it too Literature Fiction There s a lot to admire about this beautifully written novel Unique captivating complex and thought provoking The way the stories and characters interconnect is cleverly crafted Literature Fiction A swamp knows than most people about most things It s our nature for within the damp and nebulous borders of swamp water carries messages stories and even gossip Swamp is connected to all waterways of course. The mires literature fiction pdf Three women s lives intersect and nothing will be the same again In the near future these women become neighbors in a coastal town in Aotearoa New Zealand Single parent Keri juggles her spirited four year old Walty and gifted teen Wairere who has an other wordly sense it seems They live next to opinionated Janet and newcomer Sera a refugee from Europe s ecological devastation. The Mires4. Book The mireslush 5 Literature Fiction A swamp knows than most people about most things It s our nature for within the damp and nebulous borders of swamp water carries messages stories and even gossip Swamp is connected to all waterways of course This is the opening passage of a book that surprised me in its beauty its character and its power. The Mires kindle cloud With Maori culture threaded throughout this perspective added a richer tone to an already wonderful read Literature Fiction There are particular moments in a life when a person decides who they are Every other moment is proof of those decisions but occasionally we cross a boundary or make a conscious choice between one fight and another. Kindle The miresource The Mires centres around three families who really are trying to develop their connections and forge friendships all the while around them things are brewing It ties in a swamp and a mythology of sorts around Wairere a young teenager who seems to have walked the earth before she is cluey she senses things and to others she seems odd She is definitely forewarned yet being forearmed isn t always warmly accepted We also meet Sera Adam and Aliana new refugees finding a hoe in a quiet suburb and their neighbour Keri mother to Wairere and son Walty and Janet and her son Conor who arrives home to the neighbourhood The depiction of Janet was rather unsettling she s one of those people who don t think they re saying anything wrong when in fact they are the epitome of racism Janet ultimately learned this the long and hard way and potentially a little too late especially in relation to her son Conor Connor morphs into who he is based on his upbringing and his disconnection from having a strong personal identity it is the extremism and racism that speaks to him so seductively tricking him into thinking that it is right The night becomes that barking as if the whole world s telling him he doesn t belong. The mires literature fiction pdf This is a book that illustrates how extremism racism and intolerance can fester into a melting pot very quicky and easily and that there is a very thin line between wanting to know as opposed to destroying what we do not understand How do you address extremism and white supremacy when it has sadly infiltrated the mainstream Even with the harshness of the extremism in this story there is such a gentle nature to the writing and to many of the characters in this book The way Sera cares for her daughter and husband the way Keri looks out for her children and develops a connection to Sera Almost like the connections of wetlands in M ori culture giving food habitat and the gift of balance for perfection everything weight against everything else. Book The mireslush Extraordinary Unexpected brilliance I m not sure what else I can say about this book If if we all practiced manaakitanga a little in our lives showing kindness respect and comfort for the needs of others our world may be a lot less scary than it is now Literature Fiction Wise terrifying and comforting all at the same time Literature Fiction 2024 BOOK REVIEW The Mires Tina Makereti This was such a unique and captivating story that touched on so many important topics including race colonisation climate change and community It follows three different women and their families living in coastal New Zealand where they end up as neighbours I really loved the spiritual and magical realism elements weaved into this book I was definitely not expecting that when I picked it up so it was a welcomed surprise It also really tapped into the experience of refugees which I think is so important to acknowledge. Mira books What you can expect Page turner Magical realism M ori culture and language Family dynamicsThe writing was beautiful and lyrical with so many references to the M ori culture which truly added so much depth to the story and was unlike anything I ve read before Thank you so much to ultimopress and tina, Book The mireslush hide Woven through the story are Maori words spirituality and the ongoing presence of the ancestors An acknowledgement of land and it s creatures the importance of protection and preservation: Book The mireslush A book of multiculturalism harmony and finding your people alongside the terror of hate supremacy and being vulnerable to being indoctrinated into something very dark: Book The miresball This is a book of family connection to land history culture intolerance prejudice and extremism.
