From the blurb it seems like this would be an interesting novel with a good story line But this is the type of book that makes me HATE reading and takes me back to the trauma of forced reading It s a completely crappy feeling. Tramell from Basic Instinct vibes Having a sharp set of skills both with and knife and her tongue Kayla is introduced as a sociopathic sinner with a bone to gnaw for Nathan Parker Sloane composes internal monologues on the page in a way that is primeval and real Pushing limits of how deep one s psyche wanders when fantasies and obsessions dig their nails in Written in first person and gifting the reader with a direct arterial mainline to Kayla s streams of consciousness and she doesn t hold back It is evident Kayla has revenge on the mind with a side of painfully erotic creativity But we learn how to treat others in the world because someone else gave us a blueprint didn t we Tragedy is a cloak Kayla wears as armour that surrounds her troubled soul The character development of Kayla and rest of the cast is done with discernible intention I have read other erotic horror stories and most pale to compare to this novella in both character realism and range of breadth Allusion is threaded throughout this story in forms of comparison to the original Little Mermaid no not the one with the seagull and dinglehoppers A suggestion of primordial magics and energetic equalizers making the framework within the narrative engrossing Masculine and feminine energies like those of yin and yang and balance of opposite forces All doing so without outweighing one another keeping the story fluent and direct To want to die is its own condemnation There is a familiarity with the setting of this story having it placed in recent times in the USA With tactful use of pop culture references and relevant lingo these aspects only heighten the immersion into this character driven story A tipping point right around the 50% mark had me leaning completely in and in full rapture right til the end and I can confidently bet you didn t not forsee this conclusion Now we need a remix of Billie Eilish s What Was I Made For song but have it dripping with heavy metal notes and we ve got a potential theme song for Ready Willing I have now read three of Shiloh Sloane s books each one vies for the next furlong on her racetrack of storytelling The brilliance of Sloane s works is they all have a distinct skill and there s no clear winner in her arena because each turnout is just as worthy as the last My advice Trust Shiloh to deliver on themes and tropes that have a stigma of being Ready and willing book But as the plot begins to unfold we start to see the bigger picture there s a story that began with her forgotten childhood abuse at the hands of those who should ve cherished her and continues on impacting sometimes knowingly and sometimes subconsciously every move she makes When these horrific events are brought to light many years later things are set into motion that irrevocably change the course of her life Her path of destruction is laid out before her and she can t help but to follow The way that Kayla is written is nothing short of genius All her life she has understood one thing that her beauty and sexuality are weapons to be honed rife with power to be harnessed And harness it she does In present day she is a fucking force to be reckoned with Her desire and ability to control men to get what she wants is intoxicating She owns every piece of herself and unabashedly adores all of her attributes that others might see as sociopathic She takes what she wants and is not to be fucked with She is resplendent in her self awareness and it s a goddamn thing of beauty. Ready and willing jagged edge As the story progresses and the flashbacks start to catch up with present day we begin to see different facets of her psyche For the most part she celebrates the path that brought her to where she is But we see glimpses of the side of her that mourns the loss of the piece of her that died when those wrongs were done to her There is a dichotomy of emotion at play and it s tragic and beautiful in equal measure. Ready willing definition At certain points of the book we begin to see elements of magic or at least that s how I interpreted them Others might see only symbolism and honestly it could go either way But I choose magic because that s the way this story made me feel And no you won t get your romantic HEA but if you re like me you will experience some satisfying heartbreaking resolution for the heroine that will make you ugly cry and set your soul on fire At the end of the day this book is fucked up and it s gonna make you feel things Soooo many things All of the things It s completely out there but it s also fully grounded in reality It s witty and laugh out loud funny but it s also tragic as fuck and will break your heart It s sexy and hot as hell but it s also a cold shower bitch slap across the face It s brutal and gory but also precious and delicate And as with all of Shiloh s work the darkness and the depravity serve a purpose and are fully tethered to the emotional component of the story I know with certainty what this book meant to me but it will probably mean something completely different to you and that s what makes it so damn beautiful. Ready and willing crossword clue g There were roads I could have taken and made my own scraped into the cliffside painting the mountain like my own personal wildfire of black and red and shining chrome This could have been softer but I didn t have the stomach for soft My teeth were meant to crunch bone I m sure that I was really losing my investment al together It isn t that this kind of writing isn t good but after hearing it so often in nearly every paragraph and multiple times in many in around 40 pages I just couldn t continue especially without knowing when the real chunks of plot were going to move into the forefront of the book and not be overshadowed with the language usage I really felt like to give this the kind of attention and promotion an ARC would deserve would mean I would have to wade through all of this to find a shining light and as I have read other s favorable reviews that may have been towards the end To me life is short and forcing yourself to read a book that is making you feel uncomfortable or taking you out of the story so often isn t worth the investment of time I posted this commentary about my experience and the reasons for DNF ing in the first place because none of these things and hardly any others at the time of my posting were being addressed at all the general consensus was that this was the most amazing and life altering book of all time I don t believe that those reviews are disingenuous but i thought they should be brought up I do admit that my review was harsh and I haven t changed the content In reviews that have since been posted some reviewers have acknowledged that the beginning is hard to get through and that this style is something you need to commit to to get to the gem of the end and the overall story Unfortunately that wasn t something I was or am willing to do to me life s to short to be constantly pulled out of a book and I made the completely legitimate choice to DNF I d want to talk about people coming into my comments and insulting my intelligence and right to have been able to consume this book I feel mostly unbothered by these statements but I d want to say that having been in the reading and review game for a while now I am usually turned of by a fanbase coming after a person s review regardless of if I agree or not or even if I think it s harsh The reason this can be a turn off for me and other readers I know is that it can make the prospect of reading a book that one may have been excited about a scary experience because if the conclusion I come to is not in agreement with those fans I might be criticized for my own In my opinion that can do damage to a book s marketing and readability because it can make some people feel like they can t be honest with their opinions or should avoid the book the author and the fandom entirely Again I want to reiterate that I never meant offense or hate towards the fans of or the author themself I feel like if you have a different opinion the best way to support the author and even drown out mine if you disagree with it is to like reviews you agree with and write your own favorable one As always I am grateful to have had the opportunity to receive an advanced copy but I do not feel like I am the perfect audience for this book The right audience will find this book but I do hope than anyone with an opinion different than those raving about the book feel safe enough to post Ready and Willing An Erotic Stalker Horror Ready and Willing by Shiloh Sloane ARC Review WTF did I just read This is darklike really dark messed up and addictive I couldn t put it down I needed to know what the hell was going on The story flips from past and present through the chapters giving you raw and dirty bread crumbs This had my stomach in knots We knew we were living on borrowed time.
