I was given a free copy of The Thing About my Uncle by Peter Stavros via Librarything This is a debut novel by Peter Stavros He is off to a great start This was a very good book I found it intriguing and I never knew what would happen next I look forward to reading his next book Hardcover Disenchanted directionless slacker with attitude Rhett Littlefield is expelled from his high school in Louisville after being falsely accused of a serious crime his shenanigan swansong He s packed off for a stretch with Uncle Theo in the hollers of Eastern Kentucky for a short sharp shock Strict home schooling schedules are put in place mystery meats served and mountain bike treks organised as Rhett and taciturn tattooed Theo gradually get to know one another and confront the consequences of events from their shared past. The Thing About My unclenching Narrated by 14 year old Rhett childhood memories hard facts and new developments drive the story forward The Thing about my Uncle is an easy read and got under my skin around halfway through I found the repetitive style brought characters locations and situations into sharper focus and the predictability heightened anticipatory tension. The Thing About My unclenoway The coming of age story is well told and the descriptions of the Kentucky landscape are extremely evocative Where the gathering of the neighbourhood posse made me smile the high school gymnasium circus and dream sequences were sickening shocking and brutal Religion booby traps and horticulture Chekhov legal pads and wrestling enigmatic endearing and entertaining things about uncle Theo that make this a really good book Hardcover I was intrigued by this book s synopsis The intrigue kept me hooked and reading Theo is a likable charcter who is standoffish but yet intelligent The reader can follow along on his life and the crime committed against him. The Thing About My unclenoway I loved the sense of community the way that Theo and Rhett relate to each other both expecting respect and understanding in their unique way I really enjoyed the pace of the book it gently revealed just enough to keep the reader hooked It also allowed the reader to fill in some of the gaps that the book did not explain ie POPS Overall a great book about family and community Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for this honest review Hardcover Rhett is a teeanger who is lost in life he does what he wants without measuring the consequences until he gets expelled from school for something he didn t do and is sent to his uncle s house a person who he vaguely remembers Uncle Theo is a very reserved man and his main goal is to set Rhett straight make him study and choose what he wants to be in life He also has a dog Chekhov who intimidates Rhett at the beginning Rhett and Uncle Theo will take time to warm up to each other Rhett finds his uncle a mysterious man and the people who come to the house even difficult to read and understand Rhett will grow under Theo s guidance and will learn the difficult truth about his past and his family Beautifully written The Thing About My Uncle is a story about coming of age acquiring knowledge and confidence and learning that the lines of good and evil are sometimes interlocked and blurred Highly recommended I thank Mr Stravos his publisher and NetGalley for this ARC Hardcover The Thing About My Uncle by Peter J Stavros is a highly recommended coming of age story. The Thing About My uncletan Rhett Littlefield 14 is expelled from school and his mother sends him to live with his Uncle Theo in the hollers of Eastern Kentucky After meeting his uncle s dog Chekhov Rhett settles into his situation Uncle Theo is a great cook tattooed works out in his gym spends a lot of time working on his garden and is going to set Rhett on the right path He puts Rhett on a strict homeschooling schedule and gets Rhett a mountain bike to ride some of the mountain trails Rhett settles into his new situation including no of his mom s tuna mac. The Thing About My uncletopia ip The family all have secrets that end up getting exposed and past events are explained The bond the grows between Rhett and Theo helps reconcile some of Rhett s misconceptions about the past by exposing some of the secrets and revealing the truth about events that have influenced his whole life Faith is also explored in a gentle way. The Thing About My uncletan dealdash The Thing About My Uncle is a highly recommended well written debut novel that is compelling As the characters grow to know each other and share secrets it prepares them for the explosive ending Thanks to BHC Press for providing me with an advance reader s copy via NetGalley My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion. The Thing About My uncletan His mysterious lame heavily tattooed uncle doesn t talk much just imposes a strict home schooling schedule on his errant nephew feeds him and assigns him a simple room in his tumbledown farmhouse Uncle also disappears for long periods either working out in his barn gym or puttering about his garden It takes a while for Rhett told in his first person point of view to warm up to Uncle although Uncle is a great cook and does gift Rhett with a mountain bike for weekend exercise But what is Uncle up to behind the barn every day what are the warning phone messages he receives who are the strange people who drop in or spy on him and what is he constantly writing late at night Even for an innocent 14 year old it certainly takes Rhett a long time to figure out the marijuana growing operation which is lethally booby trapped and to sort out who s who of the shady characters that enter onto the farm property now and again. The Thing About My unclepunch training There are a few places the storyline drags such as in Rhett s first encounter with the guard dog and his first mountain biking day There are also a number of places Uncle introduces the topic of religion praying church attendance God s plan for Rhett that feel like a dropped in unnatural fit with the storyline and indeed slow it down a bit But it doesn t take over the book And both Rhett and his uncle undergo strong character arcs. The Thing About My unclemiltonstore The author uses a lot of repetition of words which ranges from lyrical and stylistically pleasing to overdone and slightly annoying For instance there are 25 mentions of tuna mac Rhett s favorite food and five identical descriptions of the dumpster that smells like sour milk. The Thing About My uncletopia servers One small complaint Rhett has a recurring nightmare about his absentee father that never gets explained If the explanation is revealed subtly I didn t get it and it left me wanting. The Thing About My unclenched The story is also briefly unexpectedly heavy handed on violence near the end but nothing teen readers can t handle Nor is occasional swearing anything teens will mind A sample of the strong voice in the writing He was showing it off to a bunch of us before class shooting the shit out back behind the dumpster that smelled like sour milk bragging about how he had swiped it from his old man s dresser when he was searching for his nudie mags That son of a bitch must have slipped it into my bag when he spotted Mr Smitherman walking in our direction and someone must ve tipped off Mr Smitherman since everyone snitched and tattled and told on everyone at this stupid school that I didn t even want to be at anyhow There was no honor here But dang I never saw Mr Smitherman coming I must ve had my head in the clouds as usual Nor did I expect what was to follow Expulsion Mr Smitherman shouted to me at the top of his lungs that one vein that ran up the side of his neck warped and crooked and purple and I sore it was pulsing like some sort of alien earthworm. What is my uncle to my children This review is also posted at Hardcover 4 I really enjoyed The Thing About My Uncle 14 year old Rhett finds himself in trouble and is sent to stay with his uncle in the hollers of Kentucky to be set straight During his time there he comes to learn a lot about himself his family history and the uncle he didn t know he needed. The Thing About My unclepunch training The story was compelling and for the most part unpredictable I really enjoyed the writing style I was into the book by the 2nd chapter My favorite character was Theo Rhett s uncle He was such a kind good man very complex and just the person Theo needed in his life at the time I also really like Theo s voice He was real and clever Sometimes I thought the things he said were not the way I think a 14 year old would say them but then again he liked to write so maybe it was the voice of a budding writer The author used the convention of repetition a lot tuna mac the gray part around his mouth etc It was funny at first but got to be a little much for me Because of the repetition of the tuna mac I was almost expecting a recipe at the end of the book That would ve been funny. The Thing About My uncletopia tf2 As I read it the central themes are rejection acceptance and faith The author does a great job exploring these themes Rejection or perceived rejection plagues Rhett from an early age when his father leaves and he blames himself He s rejected by his school administrators and perceives himself to be rejected by his mother and uncle Of course he comes to realize he hadn t been rejected at all and comes to accept himself and like himself for who he is with all his imperfections Theo s faith and eventually Rhett s factor so heavily in this book that I was surprised it wasn t listed as Christian fiction It never really gets into the gospel though so maybe it s just a general faith in God than Jesus in particular I would absolutely recommend this book. Touch not the unclean thing kjv book 5 StarsThis is an enjoyable coming of age story Fourteen year old Rhett Littlefield is expelled from his school in Louisville Kentucky His mother totally frustrated with his behaviour sends him to stay with her brother Theo Uncle Theo is a reclusive reserved man who lives alone except for his dog Chekhov on an isolated farm in Eastern Kentucky Feeling he has no choice Rhett agrees to his uncle s strict home schooling schedule though he is given a mountain bike so he can go exploring on weekends Rhett is determined to get to know his uncle especially after they have some strange visitors Gradually Rhett uncovers his uncle s secrets including some directly connected to his own past As I mentioned this is a coming of age story Rhett is trying to figure out where he belongs because his mother works a lot he has little supervision I had nothing to do nowhere to be He is troubled by the absence of his father a man who left the family about ten years earlier Rhett feels guilty believing he was somehow responsible for his father s taking off and leaving his family He admits that after a few years I gave up on waiting for Pops to come back and I gave up on a lot of other things too school being the primary other thing His being sent away by his mother feels like another abandonment At Uncle Theo s his life is structured and he has to pay attention to his studies He is also encouraged not to waste time to be active and to have fun as well As time passes he realizes the truth of his uncle s lessons gains confidence and becomes secure in his self I guessed there was something to be said for not fitting in and still being comfortable in your own skin Rhett is a young boy it is difficult not to like He s a good kid who has not had an easy home life Though he does not always follow the rules he s not incorrigible He s lost and troubled He s sensitive imaginative and as his uncle repeats you sure are an inquisitive one He loves his mother and sister he tries to understand his mother s decision to send him away and concludes it couldn t have been easy for her I knew it couldn t sending me off like this And I felt that much worse for letting Mama down Uncle Theo is also a character the reader will come to like At first he s just a big man with a disheveled appearance wild hair unkempt beard torn clothing tattoos who is a mystery because Rhett knows little about him As Rhett gets to know his uncle we see a man who is not perfect but who is patient spiritual and wise At times he made me think of Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird just as Atticus talks to Scout and Jem so does Uncle Theo talk to Rhett and try to teach him about life It s not always so easy to tell the bad guys from the good guys The line can get pretty blurry at times That s just how life is bud and everything somehow works out the way it s supposed to Might not be the way you thought or hoped or had planned for yourself could be something you never would have imagined in your wildest dreams and appreciate how precious time is Since Rhett is the first person narrator the style with its repetitions seems appropriate Certain phrases are repeated throughout For instance when describing the dumpster near which Rhett gathers with his friends he always mentions that it smelled of sour milk when Theo rubs his beard Rhett always mentions the gray part around his mouth and when describing the quiet meals with his uncle Rhett repeats just utensils clinking against plates chews and swallows Chekhov begging for table scraps There are some nice touches of humour Rhett s first meeting with Chekhov meals with mystery meat and Rhett s naive comments which are often ironic But there is also tension especially as strange men visit Uncle Theo and when the sheriff arrives with his warning There are a couple of things that bothered me Rhett s mother never calls to speak to her son When Rhett learns something about his father he doesn t ask the most obvious question Rhett is so innocent and naive that it takes him so long to figure out the nature of his uncle s business The discussion of religion forced and unnatural and the climax inevitable and predictable. The Thing About My unclenoway Rhett is so easy to love His inquisitive personality is I believe one of his charms and he s effortlessly funny The story makes me giggle from time to time because of how Rhett thinks and probes about his Uncle Theo It s wildly amusing as well whenever he places himself in a battle between what he wants to do and what he should not do. The Thing About My uncletopia tf2 Honestly reading this story was personal to me I could not adequately describe the impact this story brought upon me but it felt like seeing a bit of my younger self and the other person I dreamed to be I could relate to Rhett in a way that I was a homeschooled student and it s refreshing to see a homeschooled student wandering around the world beyond academics. The Thing About My uncletopia ip I did not have the chance to do that during my homeschool years It felt like the world stopped when I was homeschooled but that s another story I could relate to Theo in a way that I dreamed to be like him to resist injustice Just like Rhett Theo s easy to love. The Thing About My uncleqi If there s one thing I believe best describes them it s how they bring out the best in each other And I guess it s true that to be loved is to be known My heart also goes out to Chekhov which I consider as one of the book s scene grabbers This story has a unique way of showing how pivotal it is to be understood and I am so delighted to have met Rhett Theo and Chekhov through this novel. The Thing About My uncletan Thank you NetGalley BHC Press for allowing me to read this ARC Publishing Date August 20 2024 Hardcover The thing about my uncle was that I hardly knew him It takes 14 year old Rhett Littlefield the first person narrator of this coming of age novel a while to get to know his Uncle Theo It also takes Theo a while to get to know Rhett who is sent by his mother to stay with his uncle in his secluded home in Kentucky to get straightened out after he is thrown out of school She also wants Theo to see what he caused The they learn about each other the they connect was the thing that I loved most about this story the beautiful trusting relationship that develops Things happened here that surprised Rhett and me as well It was a little slow at first but once the story evolved and we become privy to Theo s past the revelations about who he is that s when the story takes shape Rhett s past as well creeps into their lives and his intimate thoughts and memories are also revealing I should mention it s a little dark at times and there is some violence but there is also love and support from Theo s community of neighbors and friends in time of need How these characters impact each other and what they come to mean to each other is touching and is the thing about this book that makes me recommend it I received a digital copy of this book from BHC Press through Edelweiss Hardcover
