SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE STARRING LENA DUNHAM AND STEPHEN FRY A haunting riotously funny and deeply touching Publishers Weekly novel about a woman and her father s journey to Poland to revisit her family history Ruth Rothwax finds order and meaning in the words she writes for other people but she can t find words to understand the loss her family experienced during World War II She becomes obsessed with the idea of returning to Poland with her father Edek making sense of her family s past and visiting the places where her beloved parents lived and almost died But there s to this trip than Ruth can plan for By facing Poland and the past she might be able to confront her own future Treasure is the gripping story of a woman s search for memory and meaning and the reconciliation of present and past within the complicated fabric of family Acclaimed bestselling author Lily Brett explores the reverberations of loss through this remarkable and unforgettable journey of the heart Brett has an incredibly ability to explain the Jewish experience and the human experience LENA DUNHAM Brett s such an easy writer to read beautifully funny complex and delightful as well STEPHEN FRY Treasure Movie Tie in A NovelRuth is the daughter of holocaust suvivors and a successful business woman she writes letters for people a job that certainly wouldn t exist any She has finally convinced her father Edek to return to Poland and to revisit the sights of his childhood and trauma Ruth doesn t know what she is looking for but she hopes this trip will mend something inside her This is a deeply moving journey through Warsaw Lodz Krakow and Auschwitz as Ruth and Edek follow his journey from his childhood home to the ghetto and then concentration camp Originally published as Too Many Men it s somewhat autobiographical as Brett completed a similar trip with her father in the mid 90s too I am left wondering how much of Brett is in Ruth and if this novel was a way for her to express her anger fully While Edek is happy to laugh and joke with Polish people Ruth displays incredible anger and at times blatant racism at Poles anger than she directs at Germans While this is incredibly moving there are some parts where the story was clunky The history of the Holocaust is extensive and intricate and while it s important for the reader to know the history Brett uses a couple of methods which didn t work for me Ruth is a know it all having read extensively about the holocaust leading her to explain events to her father who lived it It is done in such a clumsy way that its often just a paragraph of historical fact which doesn t fit into the prose Similarly Ruth starts to experience audio hallucinations when she lands in Warsaw in the form of Rudolf Hoss comander of Auschwitz Hoss explains the foundation of the camp justifies how he ran it shifts blame but he is explaining this to Ruth who knows everything about Hoss and Auschwitz making it a clumsy and weird way to convey information to the reader This sharing of historical information works much better when Edek shares events with Ruth and they have a genuine conversation instead of her reciting facts At various points Ruth hires guides for locations but then she doesn t allow them to speak or she becomes annoyed when they try to do their job and share the history of the location The sharing of history could have come from Edek or the guides and it could have worked much better however I think Brett really wanted to say something about the Polish people mining Jewish suffering for financial gain and tourism what must she think of Auschwitz now and the antisemitism which still exists Maybe this could have been done better if Ruth was likeable She is rude angry dismissive and very focused on a job which sounds ridiculous No one needs a letter so urgently that they are being called in Lodz in the middle of the night These criticisms aside this was a moving and interesting read The conversations between Ruth and Edek are sweet and often darkly funny Treasure Movie Tie in A Novel Great except for the dead guy dialogWhat a wonderful story which leaves the reader ready for the next book Her dialog with the SS who ran the death camp almost ruined it for me It was unnecessary and disturbing detracting from the story Treasure Movie Tie in A Novel DNF about halfway through Not much is happening and what is is pretty miserable Really not sure what the point of the Nazi ghost is Treasure Movie Tie in A Novel
