Koro's starpets 5 stars 1775438619 I really enjoyed this engaging story about a young boy Atama who is having to deal with the fact that his dad has been posted to Vietnam and also the fact that his mum and sister have had to move again to a new army base and so he has to try and make friends again Just before his dad leaves Atama s dad gives him one of his koro s war medals for bravery after he was killed during World War 2. Koro's starnik Atama wears his medal under his t shirt to give him courage as he tries to make new friends which he eventually does when he meets Jace Benny and Hera But when Jace tells him that he needs to complete an initiation task if he wants to join the gang Atama is nervous Under cover of darkness he is told he has to enter a tunnel deep underground and collect a momento from the end The tension which builds as Atama completes this task is palpable and when his new neighbour Eden is also initiated in the same way the tension builds further This is a simple tale set in a simpler time of friendship and family It is well written and is the 2023 winner of the Tom Fitzgibbon Award for a previously unpublished author and at less than 150 pages this could appeal to some of our reluctant readers Add to this a good balance of action and character building it could also appeal to teachers who want to use it as a readaloud 1775438619 Atama is worried about his dad going away to Vietnam Dad is a radio operator in the NZ Army and Atama s Koro was also a soldier.
