Never forgive never forget The story revolves around a huge family secret We experience a French wedding with all of its traditions and we get to know two branches of a family We know something happened 8 years ago to tear the family apart but no one will talk about it much to the despair of thriller reader Hetty Hetty is the girlfriend of one of the family and has joined them for the wedding She feels like she does not fit in to this rich family because of her background Hetty has her own sad story which is gradually revealed. Forgive but never forget book The story is told from both Hetty and Ailsa s points of view so we see two different sides as events occur The story flashes back and forth from the present to 2016 and builds up to the reveal of this big secret which is truly devastating. Forgive but never forget book The interactions between boy and girl cousins was interesting and an unusual twin relationship where they don t have the special connection It s interesting how you can go from utterly despising a character throughout to feeling sorry for them by the end Such is the quality of the writing I don t like waiting so long to find out what the big secret is that s constantly being alluded to This may be personal preference but when it s too strung out it gets irritating My only minor quibble 332 Hetty is a woman in her early twenties who comes from a challenging background She goes out with Davey who is her opposite he s from an affluent family and never wished for anything. Never forgive never forget I loved that this was told over a now and then timeline and mainly through the pov s of Hetty and Ailsa Ailsa Davey s sister one of twins is clearly not happy to be back in France with the family slowly we learn all about life before when things were good and holidaying at the big house were the best days of their lives But when the groom JJ becomes ill on his wedding day things take a sinister turn and the story and tension ramps up When we circle back to see the now events through Hetty s eyes there s some repetition but this fitted the storyline and added a different perspective which helped us build a better view of Ailsa s personality I did guess the whodunit a while before the reveal but this didn t spoil my enjoyment of the story overall as there were lots of threads weaving together throughout and it was great to read how everything came together and to find out the how and why too The characters were all well developed and I loved the extremes in class personality and judgements throughout and also how these gradually changed during the events for certain characters I think this is my first read by this author and I really enjoyed it I can t wait to read in the future 332 The setting is fabulous a big house in the French countryside and the preparations for the wedding The reader is given a glimpse of another life and the different traditions surrounding a familiar event There is also the sense of another way of life for Archie and Romilly Isabel s parents who behave like they are lord and lady of the manor well he is a High Court judge The locals may go the events and parties that they organise but they will forever be English outsiders and the local gypsies are especially wary. Never forgive you meaning The story is told through multiple perspectives mainly Hetty and Ailsa so the flow is not always linear as occasional back steps are taken to see events through the eyes of another. Forgive but never forget book Hetty is the central character and is quiet and unassuming mainly due to her background so she tries to avoid the limelight She does want to become accepted by the family though if just for her relationship with Davey She has something of an inferiority complex coming from humble beginnings unlike the rest of the characters but there is an honesty about her All she needs to do is develop a little self confidence and brazen things out she s the equal of any and better than most around her She s also a crime fiction reader which raises her to an elite status in my mind and this reading preference ends up becoming useful True crime aficionados will also be nodding in agreement as Hetty demonstrates her knowledge on one aspect of the crime with actions that echo a notorious UK killer.
