A Pastor's Heart: Essays in Memory of Harry L. Reeder III By Ike Reeder
This was a book unlike any I have read before It is called a festschrift which is a collection of essays about lessons from the life of a person It is like biography where each chapter has a message written by a different eyewitness to the life of Harry Reeder I also personally knew Pastor Reeder and was reminded of messages teachings and phrases that he used to say That being said I really enjoyed this book and most of its chapters I especially loved the biography Neil Stewart s chapter on preaching John Haines chapter on Worship Brian Crosby s chapter on Missions Dr Eyrich s chapter on counseling Kevin Deyoung s chapter on leadership Sandy Wilson s summary of Dr Reeders personal life and the chapter by his daughter about what life was like being in Dr Reeders family I could go into depth about wisdom and truths in each chapter but all of them are good and some are excellent I learned much about the life of a man I have known for over a decade and can truly say that he is one of my spiritual hero s Would encourage anyone who knew of Dr Reeder who knew him personally or someone who is looking for what the life of a faithful pastor embodies to read this book English I want to start by saying that this book is geared for pastors or for men aspiring to be pastors but it is absolutely applicable for every Christian in not only better understanding the role of a pastor teacher but also in how evangelism and making disciples should be just as much part of a non pastor Christian s life. I was blessed to sit under Pastor Reeder s faithful ministry at Briarwood for a few years and found myself tearing up at some of the quotes shared amongst these essays While living he drew no quarter in teaching strongly of how our lives should be under the Lordship of Christ and how we should cling to the sufficiency of scripture to answer all of our questions on godly living He was not scared to call sin out for what it was from the pulpit One of my favorite quotes from this book was in the essay by Sandy Willson The personal character of the Christian is rooted in an intimate relationship with the Lord This intimate relationship occurs through regular fellowship with Him through the means of Grace which He has given us prayer the Word the sacraments and Christian fellowship These ordinary spiritual disciplines are the means by which believers walk intimately with the Lord become convinced of His unconditional love and are deeply moved to become like Him And this reader is the sort of character that Pastor Reeder demonstrated to his congregation and the relationship with Christ that he entreated Christians to pursue with all of their being He encouraged us to seek the Lord and His precepts in every area of our lives I thoroughly enjoyed this read and am thankful it will have a spot on my bookshelf English
