The Night Mother Vol. 1 (1) By Jeremy Lambert

Let this be the one Easy 5 5 stars The Night Mother Vol 1 1 This was a quick yet stunning graphic novel The art style was beautiful and dreamlike It reminded me of a segment from Fantasia 2000 From the get go I thought it looked like a hand drawn Disney movie from the early 2000s Think Atlantis or Treasure Planet There is a lingering horror aspect to the story that I really enjoyed The Night Mother reminded me of the witch from Scooby Doo The Witch s Ghost for some reason Which isn t a bad thing at all The story itself is very intriguing and fairytale like I wish this volume was longer It is slated to have two volumes.

Thanks to NetGalley and Oni Press for the eArc You can check out all of my reviews at my Blog Kelly s Book Nook The Night Mother Vol 1 1 I knew nothing going into this book and I m so glad that was the case because I greatly enjoyed myself reading this first volume of a middle grade graphic novel series I m a sucker for novels and graphic novels to do with the sky and celestial beings so this book was it for me. The art style was so beautiful and I loved each and every character design The plot was fascinating and one I hadn t read before which is always a win I can t wait to see where volume 2 takes us after the way this volume ended I only hope everything that happened can be undone The Night Mother Vol 1 1

The Night Mother Vol. 1 (1)Thank you to NetGalley and Simon Schuster for providing me with a digital arc of this book The Night Mother is the first installment in Lambert s debut kid s graphic novel series It s set in a world where time has stopped and people are trapped in an endless night The main character 12 year old Madelline Tock can convene with the dead but everyone in her life her father included is overly protective of her She grew up hearing the legend of the Night Mother a woman who wears the night sky and gathers the souls of the dead in her lantern But when the Night Mother begins to take the souls of the living as well as the dead there is only one who can stand up to her Illustrations alone this story would be a five star read for me Take the stunning illustrations and add them to the whimsical fairytale esque story and that makes this a perfect read It is very easy to consume and incredibly entertaining from start to finish It gave me the sensation of reading a Grimm s fairy tale with its feeling of familiarity with a healthy twinge of horror I almost wish I had waited to read this book so I could binge the entire series but as it is I am happily counting down the days until the next installment If you take only one book recommendation to heart this year but with how short this first one is I can t help but feel like it should ve all been one volume As soon as I started to get sucked into the characters and the story I was almost at the end I will definitely be reading the other volumes and recommending to friends I am so curious about the world and hope it is expanded on in future volumes Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for my honest review The Night Mother Vol 1 1 Thanks to NetGalley and Oni Press for the advanced e copy in exchange for an honest review. Madeline is a twelve year old girl who lives with her father Barnabus Barnabus is the town s gravedigger and he s a scholar of the moon and the stars He s been trying to figure out why the moon has been stuck in the sky for years For all her life Madeline has been secluded in their little house by the graveyard and lately she s been scared The voices that call for her help don t stop and she s been having nightmares about an evil woman looking for her. This graphic novel is gorgeous The illustrations are so wonderful so dreamlike it was such a joy to read Though the story is good the art style is the one reason I would want to read the next volume It s also the reason why I m rounding the rating up to a four. The story is magical And it s creepy I think a younger audience would really like seeing Madeline s adventures I just wish it was a longer This graphic novel is around 80 pages So it s quite short There s not much time to know the characters to engage with the story and the choices and losses that happen to Madeline. If you like middle grade or if you know kids that like fantasy or even scary stories appropiate for their age I think this is a fantastic choice for a next read The Night Mother Vol 1 1 3. 5 The Night Mother Vol 1 1 Thanks to Oni Press for making The Night Mother vol 1 by Jeremy Lambert Alexander Sharpe and Becca Carey available as an ARC on Netgalley The moon has frozen in the sky leaving the world in perpetual darkness Barnabus Tock local gravedigger and father to 12 year old Madeline who is beleaguered by nightmares when asleep and surrounded by the voices of the dead while awake fears that his daughter is in danger Despite his attempts to keep her inside Madeline puts herself in danger to save a stranger from the storm swept ocean who informs her that she is the only one who can save them all from the ruler of the moon the Night Mother who is searching for souls to prolong her eternal life. The art in this graphic novel is beautiful and dynamic from cover to cover matching the mix of whimsical and dark storytelling You get a good sense of who Madeline in particular is as a main character but even secondary characters have moments that help define them whether it be in a line of sarcastic humour or a moment of anxious indecision about stepping over a self imposed boundary Every opportunity is taken to bring life to this story and the characters within it. Rating 5 5 The Night Mother Vol 1 1 Let me just scream from the rooftops about how amazing this was The artwork was beautiful the story was amazing and the vibes were vibin I don t have much else to say except that this one is definitely worth the read and I need The Night Mother Vol 1 1 A gorgeously illustrated graphic novel about a young girl who cares for the dead and can hear their whispers The moon in her town is stuck at midnight and her father tries to figure out how to fix it She encounters the Night Mother a woman who gathers the souls of the dead in her lantern This had absolutely stunning graphics and colors I would revisit this just for the artwork 5 stars for that The story though felt a little bit confusing and rushed in some parts It s quite a short graphic novel at under 90 pages I think it could have benefited from having pages to flesh out the characters and their motivations Overall though I can see where the story is going and do intend to pick up the next volume An advance copy of this was provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review The Night Mother Vol 1 1 Compelling story and captivating illustrations Definitely interested in reading . Thank you to NetGalley for providing an arc The Night Mother Vol 1 1 The moon has stopped and nobody knows why and for Madeline Tock this is an unbearable situation Her father was alreading an overbearing worry wort but now that there is no daylight he has basically made her a prisoner in their home A rule that Madeline tries to follow but one night she sees something incredible out her window a young boy running across the waves Knowing she must save him she rushes out of the house not knowing that this may be the very last time she sees the father she loves so very much This just needs to be made into a Disney movie I said what I said This is such a perfect combination of wholesome and spooky that I can t see it not being a Disney movie And honestly I don t think I ve ever read a book and said Ya know what I need this to be a movie So I m pretty sure that s about the highest praise I can give a book Plus the art is absolutely gorgeous Overall I definitely recommend this It was just a super cute spooky little fairy tale As always leaving it to young Madeline Tock to save her community from a threat known only as the Night Mother The moon is stuck like a broken clock in the midnight sky the sun a distant memory No one in this quiet seaside town can remember how long this unnatural darkness has lasted No one that is except for the curious girl who lives in the graveyard caring for the dead twelve year old Madeline Tock In gratitude the departed whisper their worries to her sounding just like her overprotective but loving father beware this endless night and she who causes it Because there s someone else who can hear the whispers too someone whose gown is a map of the cosmos hair a tangled constellation eyes like the lights of faraway stars The Night Mother Her elemental duty is to gather the souls of the dead in her lantern then send them to their eternal rest as beautiful moonlight But when her hunger for power drives her to take souls from the living Madeline bravely stands up to defend her town and those she loves Can Madeline help bring back the sun or will she be lured by the starry promises of this mysterious woman Written by Jeremy Lambert Doom Patrol Buffy the Vampire Slayer Goosebumps and richly illustrated by Alexa Sharpe Lumberjanes Buffy the Vampire Slayer Uncanny Magazine The Night Mother is a lush gothic tale perfect for readers of all ages who relish in the wonder of the night sky The Night Mother Vol 1 1 site_link post a comment.
