Refuge from the worldcraft
Kim McMahill started out writing nonfiction but her passion for adventure stories of survival against the odds and speculating about the future of humanity and our planet soon turned her attention towards fiction She has published eleven novels over eighty travel and human interest articles and contributed to a travel story anthology Growing up in a beautiful mountain west community traveling the world and enjoying a twenty year career with the National Park Service has given her the opportunity to live in amazing places experience incredible adventures and witness many changes in our world Adventure Young Adult A chilling scenario depicting the future consequences of global warming sets the stage for this YA dystopian tale In Beartooth Ashley McPhee lives a quiet life with her mother Sara her best friend Caleb and a small group of families in a self sustaining small community With water levels rising and shifting tectonic plates the United States is shrinking and the residents of Beartooth fear the chaos and violence in nearby settlements will find them Especially after they learn the government plans to use an untested geoengineering process to cool the planet threatening their fragile ecosystem and potentially destroying their crops To complicate matters even further for Ashley her mother s health is failing forcing her to consider marriage and assume full responsibility of their apiary The world building is detailed depicting not only the shifting geography but also the changes in wildlife behavior From the beginning of the story a sense of danger looms over the characters that carries through to the end leading into the next book of the series coming this summer Ashley is a wonderful main character with a quiet strength pushing her forward despite all the obstacles in her path Her counterpart Caleb also plays a vital role in the story with bravery and leadership With the older members of the community aging Ashley and Caleb along with a secondary cast of characters around their age must carry the future of their community on their backs and forge ahead. Refuge from the worldgorger dragon My rating 5 starsReviewed by MichelleThis review first appeared Suspense Adventure Young Adult I was initially intrigued by this book because of a review that likened this book to the highly revered dystopian trilogy The Hunger Games but was sorely disappointed by the lack of characterization urgency or plot In a rapidly deteriorating world that has undergone a wave of devastating natural disasters millions of people are forced to leave their homes and relocate to the remaining edges of the country that have been left untouched Among those affected are Ashley McPhee and her mother Sara who resettle in a small community called Beartooth and attempt to live peaceful lives despite the challenges of their changing society As Ashley approaches womanhood she embarks on a new journey where she must navigate marriage the growing fear of her community s future and her mother s declining health. PDF Refuge from the world's While Refuge from the World is marketed as a YA science fiction fantasy the novel lacks the key elements of the genre that hook in young readers and allow them to identify their own feelings within the text Throughout the novel Ashley s experience is told through third person limited narration which creates a disjointed inner monologue as well as robotic dialogue between characters Because the characters and plot lack urgency the pacing of the novel is extremely tedious and fails to convey the much loved YA themes such as coming of age firsts and an exploration for identity Almost every chapter relies on an overuse of cliches and summary which forces the characters to remain static and unreachable throughout the novel. Refuge from the worldedit fabric The greatest hinderances to this book s potential stem from the lack of action authentic dialogue and chemistry between the characters I think because this book was marketed as YA without the clear style voice and pacing from the genre it fails to communicate the dystopian intrigue or the base idea of the synopsis Unfortunately the only time the novel begins to pick up in its pacing and intrigue is toward the very end which makes the first 90% of the novel almost unnecessary to the overarching storyline. PDF Refuge from the world's Thanks to the publisher for the e arc Suspense Adventure Young Adult This is a wonderful YA dystopian book for fans of Hunger Games It depicts a future society dealing with the chilling consequences of global warming The main character Ashley lives in Beartooth a small mountaintop community with her mother Sara Their town is separate and independent from the rest of the USA including the government But as the state of the world worsens governments contemplate using a potentially devastating scientific experiment to cool the planet The residents of Beartooth worry about the survival of their crops and beehives and they also fear their small community will be discovered and attacked by outside groups looking to control their sustainable resources I can t wait for book number two Suspense Adventure Young Adult Ash and Caleb live in a time of uncertainty dangers and challenging forces of nature Kim McMahill has written a story any YA will enjoy reading as well as an adult Their fight for survival can only be successful if they continue to support each other Well worth the read One might want to take note of many survival techniques that Ash and her mother did daily I m looking forward to Book 2 of the Beartooth Chronicles Above the Abyss Suspense Adventure Young Adult
