Damn Them All Vol. 2 By Simon Spurrier

A strong finish for a great series Fascinating reaction response to Hellblazer and Spurrier s relationship with the character of Constantine and his legacy in the from of a kickass demon hunter story elevated by Adlard s fantastic interiors Totally worth checking out good stuff all around 176 I think it got better in this volume had a lot substance Maybe a little to deep in some areas a we bit drawn out perhapsGoodread though i give both volumes 3. 7 176 One of Spurrier s better books It s still overly wordy and convoluted but actually manageable to stick with it The introduction of angels and an old boyfriend really didn t go that far It almost felt like red herrings Still a decent Hellblazer without being Hellblazer story Charlie Adlard s art is great too 176 Si Spurrier and Charlie Adlard bring their Hellblazer that s not Hellblazer book to a close roping in angels to deal with the devils that are already wrecking London There s some flashbacks characters being terrible to one another and Spurrier s trademark wit and horrible descriptions that I know and love I ll still never get used to Adlard s art being coloured after however many years of The Walking Dead though. This book just made me miss Spurrier s Hellblazer honestly and I m glad that s being allowed to reach its natural conclusion 176 Well it s Si Spurrier so of course it s wordy and convoluted Thus while I enjoyed the story and artwork I ll probably have to read this again to figure out some of the finer details of just what the hell was going on in some parts of the plot 176 Damn Them All Vol. 2Now THIS got beyond the John Constantine but a lady and with a hammer to give her REAL depth REAL motivation and make her her own character Also the demons also become of a thing and of course there are Angels doing less than Angelic things A fun read and great conclusion although would love to see her come back as long as they avoid the Constantine clich s 176 On the one hand the angels get involved They are almost worse than the demons On the other hand Theo loses one of his demons the most difficult to control He offers Ellie a truce and all the help she needs to bring that demon back. Ellie meets with Cillian her ex He has a different solution for improving the world through magic He has created a web of interconnections for this purpose with his as a benevolent leader. Ellie visits the 500 Club where she is presented their plan She is unaware that Cillian hid a familiar inside her When it exits her body it also draws the destructive angels right among the members of the 500 Club to cause havok Ellie in turn infects Cillian s community turning its members against him She returns the demon to Theo in exchange for Alfie s body as agreed Unfortunately the angels burned his body to a crisp making any magic impossible Ellie wanted to undo Alfie s last act. But the biggest revelation comes when Ellie figures out she is in reality Alfie s daughter The angels try to stop her but she sicks the demons on them She has the ability to undo Alfie last bit of magic but chooses not to do so Try to rewrite the story it ll snap back harder Instead she breaks open the gates of Paradise allowing hell to attack Funnily enough the people on Earth go about their lives as if nothing happened The story ends with another trip to the pub 176 Ellie and her hammer are back in this fast paced second volume which concludes the series Expect rampaging bored angels a new perspective on the demons just enough backstory on Ellie to keep things interesting a fairly obvious revelation about Alfie extreme wankery from the privileged elites in parliament and the 500 club some intense hammering a promising solution for London s demon problem and a well earned trip to the pub 176 45 The series end predictably though I won t pretend I had anticipated every twists and turns to get there But it s not the destination that counts but the journey And the journey was fuckin brilliant Spurrier outdoes himself in tricks turns detours twists and whatnots With british slang to spice it up I love british slang and idioms Don t ask So you basically know how it ll end but should be surprised as to how you ll get there. Ellie is an awesome character Granted she is rather typical in her don t fuck with me attitude but she s still solidly written and interesting The John Constantine shadow inevitably looms over her but she commendably stands her ground And she s got a hammer. The rest of the cast is rather standard but well written too so they perfectly play their part My reserve would be on Dora the Yank cop Her justification is feeble at best Why her Why a Yank Why a cop No reason really and she could be replaced by any other random character without any problem Adlard Dogdson on art do wonders again. All in all an excellent urban horror series Spurrier definetely got the knack for this kind of stories So if you like this genre and particularly if you re an Hellblazer fan look no further this book is for you 176 It s hard to disentangle what this second and final volume does well from my disappointment at the constantly changing business plans around this series Vol 1 premiered a fresh creator owned take on Hellblazer clearly inspired by Spurrier s Hellblazer run being unjustly cut short its expansion from a limited miniseries to an ongoing got me excited only to be let down when it ended abruptly after only 6 issues right when Spurrier was rehired for a new proper Hellblazer miniseries I have no idea what the actual motivation for each change of plan was or a right to judge how Spurrier navigates the precarious career of comics writing but I still feel a little sour seeing a repeat of his initial Hellblazer cancellation except seemingly by his own hand this time around. With that context it was harder to get invested in this world again and the closing issues seemed needlessly rushed but overall I still enjoyed a closing glimpse at this world of irreverent arcane mysticism and occult sorcery I wish there was time to explore the narrative setup here but I m also glad I got to read these 12 issues instead of none at all Separated from the rollercoaster of its publishing plans I bet this will read better all at once with the first volume in the future We give away our choices to the most ambitious powerful people then we expect em to be fair judges of how best to lift up the folks who ve got nothin It s absurd For just an instant she feels it as it must feel to others Its reassuring fugue Don t worry it whispers The universe makes sense You are part of something bigger Don t bother trying to understand it You don t need to Sssshhhhh It s not your problem It all fits It all works 176
