Fantastic non fiction exploration of the African diaspora written for children My full review is here Ain Heath Drew Although Ayo s adventure goes from Afro to Zulu this is not an alphabet book An ABC book is aimed at toddlers with just a word or phrase on each page Ain Heath Drew has created a tale aimed at school age children where Ayo s dream takes him from one place to another and he experiences different things related to the African diaspora In true dream like fashion one event blends into another Each page gives a paragraph or two of explanation about the item and an inset labels the location Erin Robinson s colorful illustrations help the reader travel to the different locations As if the text aimed at the children wasn t already informative the afterward is an extensive glossary with even information for older readers This is an alphabet book that young children can grow with This excellent book serves as both a mirror and a window into African culture and also belongs in every school and public library Ain Heath Drew Ayo s Adventure Across the African Diaspora from Afro to ZuluThis is a wonderful picture book for children to learn about the African diaspora The vibrant colorful pictures will enchant kids and adults alike and the number of words per page is perfect Kids will learn but not get bored Thanks to Barefoot Publishing for the advance copy of this book Ain Heath Drew 9 30 2024 4. Ayo's Adventure pdffiller 10 1 2024 Happy October readers With Black History Month starting in the UK what better time to explore a book on Africa and its diaspora Ayo is a young boy in America whose parents are doing a wonderful job teaching him about his heritage While he s proud to be a Black American with a rich generational history in the United States he s also tapped into the positive influences of Africa and its impact worldwide As he s falling asleep one night his drowsy brain takes him on an A to Z journey through some of the major historical highlights and cultural contributions of the African diaspora worldwide. Ayo's Adventure booktour 2022 A begins with Afro before bouncing to Braids hair issues that while nominally linked to the USA in the book are a concern for every Black person who s ever been made to feel less than respectable for having natural hair The book then swings down to Trinidad Tobago to celebrate Calypso music before heading to Mali to explore Dogon culture and from then on to the rest of the world Well not the entire rest of the world there s precious little in Europe or Asia While the African diaspora in Asia only gained a significant toehold in the 21st century it does seem a little odd from a truly global perspective that no mention of their impact in Europe is made here But that s fine this is a picture book from the United States after all and it covers so much elsewhere especially on under reported places in South America Further supplementing the body of this picture book is the excellent back matter which provides in depth information on each topic touched on in the story While the language and tone are perfect for kids the entire book is just packed with information for every reader and is super making me crave fufu with light soup right now Erin Robinson s illustrations are just fantastic throughout She did a ton of research for this book as she mentions in her note at the end and it absolutely shows in the vibrant detailed work that richly rewards the reader s scrutiny The cleverness of the spreads is of especial note as where the table in Revolution merges with the table in Soul Food on the facing page I genuinely can t overemphasize the amount of intelligence and skill put into the art of this book Each page is beautiful and detailed and perfectly complements the text really bringing the diversity and wealth of African and African diaspora history and culture to life. Ayo's Adventure books While ostensibly a children s book this is a really great way for readers of all ages to learn a little or perhaps a lot depending on where you re starting from about Black culture worldwide Recommended. Ayo's adventures made Ayo s Adventure Across The African Diaspora From Afro To Zulu by Ain Heath Drew Erin Robinson was published September 17 2024 by Barefoot Books and is available from all good booksellers music and fashion and food Each picture is vibrantly illustrated and there is a small note that explains the significance of the fact being celebrated At the back of the book there is a map to show all of the places Ayo visited and a lengthier exploration of each of the items mentioned in the book But not too long Just enough to whet your appetite to learn Or search out some soul food fufu or mofongo The author admits to learning quite a bit as she researched this book I know I learned a lot I had never heard of Taytu Betul Empress of Ethiopia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries She was a brilliant military strategist who stood up to Italian colonizers Or Mansa Musa a great ruler of the Mali Empire in the early 1300s The you read the you learn I highly recommend adding this book to library and school collections It is a treasure trove of information that will spark further research Ain Heath Drew This ebook was made available for me to read and review by Ain Heath Drew Barefoot Books and NetGalley. Book Ayo's adventurer The illustrator of this picture ebook is Erin K Robinson The illustrations are bright crisp inviting and easily recognizable The beautiful illustrations are eye catching while really supporting and enhancing the narrative The illustrations are exciting for younger kids who might not yet completely understand the text. Ayo's adventurex This ebook is a beautiful way to both reinforce letter sounds and placement while offering a stunning Diasporic history for little kids This covers the Diaspora as well as highlights countries deities languages clothing and tribal affiliations from West Africa This includes multiple nations and customs within North South America the Caribbean and West Africa The representation is meaningful the history is accurate and the story is told in a positive and engaging manner. Book Ayo's adventureland I can not recommend this highly enough to parents of toddlers babies and early grade school age children This is a highly educational and highly enjoyable book I m looking to order a hardcover copy for my grandkids This is a treasure.
