Heather Daughrity is a writer of old fashioned horror She dreams of long candlelit passageways and things that go bump in the night She writes in the quiet hours before sunrise She released her first book Knock Knock just before her fortieth birthday and has since released two short story collections Tales My Grandmother Told Me and Echoes of the Dead She is also the curating editor of the anthologies House of Haunts and Hospital of Haunts. Echoes of the deade book The dead are gone but not forgotten Each life leaves an imprint a legacy with inherently human characters and tales that are both as scary as they are heart wrenching Do yourself a favor and pick this one up when it s released Horror Paranormal Fantasy This was a great collection of stories by Heather Each of these ghost stories was thrilling but at the same time heartbreaking It hit me hard because I have missing family members that I still remember and wish were still around It pushes the idea of how valuable time with our loved ones really is and how short it can be Heather knows how to weave a story to keep me intrigued. Echoes of the deaddon As a bonus the last story is a memoir of the past few years of Heather s life I thought it was a nice touch to add such a story This is a great collection of stories you should check out if you enjoy ghost stories Horror Paranormal Fantasy To be honest I only picked this book up to read the last chapter To see what was said about the author s mother It was pretty much what I thought it would be I debated on writing a review as I wasn t going to read the rest of the book however despite my feelings about the author I decided to go ahead and finish it The completionist in me required it The book is touted as a book of fictional horror stories While a few of them did seem fictional there were than a few that weren t and the poems in particular are not The first story is called Despair I noticed all the stories began with D I am not sure why. Echoes of the deadjacket In this story we meet Julia Marshall A woman whose life is about to turn upside down after her family dies in a terrible car crash and the aftermath of that tragedy builds to one last event As a mother this is one story that is or rather should be every mother s worst nightmare I found it profoundly sad and definitely made me want to go hug my children and husband. Echoes of the deadbridge The poem I held a Life is the authors account of a miscarriage I found it sad and yet confusing knowing what I know about her Duality is the story of Caleb and Colton twin brothers in the prime of their lives Popular good looking athletic Unfortunately tragedy is right around the corner for one of them The story was just okay in my opinion It didn t really stick out to me. Echoes of the deadknight Doubts is about a widower named Mark He is left with his daughter Nora after the death of his wife He is at a loss as to how to care for her without the help of his late wife Sam It was a pretty cute story It s interesting to see how a man deals with the death of a spouse especially with a small child The ending was better than I thought it would be. Echoes of the deade mtg Desire is the account of Miranda and her lover Daniel She begins an affair with a man she knew in high school and back then she never even gave him a second glance However years later in an unhappy marriage she starts seeing him initially just for sex After profound guilt she breaks it off Months go by without hearing from him and when he finally checks his social media account she finds that he has passed away What happens after is both sad and disturbing Dust is another poem This time about the things we leave behind while alive The dust of our skin hair and memories I found this poem to be quite sad This line in particular made me think about my own life and the things I have left behind I am dust In every playground and zoo and museum and park within a day s drive of my house Where I brought my children to play and to learn where most of the days of my life disappeared When I read this my first thought was damn What an insult to your children. Echoes of the deadj book Defenses was one of the story s that I actually really enjoyed Mel has been visiting her grandmother who has dementia for a while and on this occasion her grandmother has been telling her a story about how she met her husband While courting her husband she was also seeing another guy albeit not seriously at least not to her He was serious though and the things that happened because she turned down his proposal were nothing short of tragic Demon s centers around Michael Fenton Michaels father has recently passed away and he has to go back to his small town to deal with the funeral and while there he finds out that he also has to deal with the house his father left behind Once there he is faced with many demons His father a longtime alcoholic left the house in the same condition it had been for 20 years Michaels room was exactly as it had been when he left home his mother s things still in the place she left them While in his room Michael finds a letter his dad left him His dad has apparently been going through AA and this was a step for him He never mailed it instead placing it on the pillow in Michaels old room Michael quickly realizes that he too suffers from the same demons his father had and once he leaves he makes the resolve to change once home This too was one of the story s that I liked. Echoes of the deadjacket And last but certainly not least the whole reason I even bothered with this book Decisions a sort of memoir as I suspect this whole book really is In this chapter the author discusses her mother I felt this chapter was an excuse to justify her life now Using her mother as an example of a wasted life Something she states over and over again she doesn t want We definitely have different ideas on what a wasted life is Overall this book was better than I expected It kind of surprised me in a way and in some ways it didn t I really tried to be unbiased and read each story without thinking about the author and what I know about her and how our lives have intermingled I will give her the credit of being a decent writer and having the ability to write stories that are at times intriguing yet also heartbreaking However in this book the majority of the women hate their lives They are not interested in their kids their husbands or anything related to being a wife and mother I believe this to be a direct reflection of the authors true feelings on motherhood and those of us who are just stay at home moms If you enjoy stories about what the dead leave behind paranormal and grief horror then this is the book for you. Echoes of the deadanger Additionally The digital formatting was quite distracting as the page notifications were randomly put on each page And at the very end the person who formatted the book for some reason decided to add how the book was formatted what font was used spacing margins etc Even stating the binding is perfect I find this to be weird and unnecessary I have read hundreds of digital books and have never seen this It felt like someone bragging Horror Paranormal Fantasy Heather Daughrity certainly has a talent for finding the things that make a reader s skin crawl Disembodied whispers ghosts the lunatic strolling down the street just moments away from cracking and leaving a path of destruction in his wake Yes Echoes of the Dead is most certainly filled to the brim with the scares that you hope to encounter any time you crack up a great horror story There is something else here though In a tradition of writers like Shirley Jackson and as far back as Poe or as recent as Stephen Graham Jones Daughrity has the secret to make these words linger long after the last page is read She knows that the true lasting horror lies at the heart of every day inescapable fears The distance that grows between a mother and child Those quirks or even downfalls that we might inherit from our family The hurt that is unavoidable just by living These are the true scares found in Echoes of the Dead This is truly harrowing material here stuff that will make you squeamish but importantly stuff that will make you think written by an author that could not have as empathetically told these tales without having first had to experience them to some degree Horror Paranormal Fantasy This book absolutely floored me I know I used the Shirley Jackson comparison and I m not backing away from that but now you have to toss the work of a talented poet into that description I m not sure if Jackson wrote poetry but if she did it might look something like Heather Daughrity s There you have it folks Short stories that will haunt my mind for a while and poetry that I would love to analyze with my students I recommend the whole book but the standouts for me the ones I ll probably revisit at least once are Despair Duality Dissonance and Defenses as far as her short stories go and I Held a Life and especially Dust as far as her poetry goes I want to read dissect and discuss Dust with my students It might be one of the best poems I have ever read Horror Paranormal Fantasy

Echoes of the Dead: Collected HauntingsBeautifully Haunting TalesI initially went into this thinking it was an anthology of horror stories and in a way it was but it was much deeper than that This is a collection of real life horror grief loss how it changes the characters There were spooky elements but mostly it was beautifully sad and raw Some of the content could be triggering for some readers Horror Paranormal Fantasy Heather perfectly captures the despair hopelessness and emptiness of grief and how loss can affect people Her stories have the homey spookiness that I love Haunting Horror Paranormal Fantasy I enjoyed this poignant collection of dark haunting tales It s a quick read with plenty of fast paced suspense for us horror fiction lovers but the stories also showcase the author s beautiful writing Heather Daughrity with her eloquent writing style seems to write from her heart with boundless empathy for the human condition Horror Paranormal Fantasy.

. Echoes of the deadcry Dissonance seems to be about the transition of one of the authors kids and the aftermath that followed That is all I will say on this one, Pdf echoes in death The Veil is another poem I have nothing of note on this one
