Seems to see who Maggie really is which will set these two down a path of destruction This book definitely had it s ups and downs There were parts that really drew my interest and other parts that I skimmed in boredom Maggie was quite the character and she will have you cringing throughout the entire book The latter half of the book does ramp up in both suspense and darkness and the ending was delightfully twisted which made this a worthwhile reading experience for me 4 stars Thank you to NetGalley and Harper for my complimentary copy 0063378892 What in the ever loving fudge did I just read I mean.

Is responsible for some very bad things. Pdf hvac system I went into this without having a clue what to expect Story starts out sane and normal with Maggie wanting to help Tess However there is tension building between young Otto and Maggie I didn t know what to expect from either one of them As a thriller fan I know to expect a The Big Reveal I try to keep my mind open as to what the surprise might be I wasn t close The ending is a bit OTT but on the whole it was an entertaining read Maggie Meg Reed is a fantastic narrator Her performance of ALL the characters is excellent I want to thank NetGalley and Harper Audio for this early audiobook Publishing Release Date scheduled for December 3.

Maggie Burkhardt finds solace amid the pandemic at the Royal Karnak Palace Hotel in Egypt She spends her days reminiscing about her deceased husband and her daughter that also died much too young leaving Maggie alone in the world Since their passing she has traveled throughout Europe Before making her way to Egypt she was in Sweden where a tragedy sent her fleeing in the night to her new found safe place Once she s settled in this meddlesome octogenarian has finally met her match with the arrival of new guests Tessa and her 8 year old son Otto Otto with his mismatched eyes the blurb told me exactly what this book was going to be about so I guess I shouldn t be surprised but I absolutely did not expect it to be so dark If you re going into this one planning to read about a benignly meddlesome old woman and a mischievous young boy playing harmless pranks on each other well it s certainly not that Which I guess is a good thing because that sounds like a boring read now that I think about it Havoc is a lot of things but boring is not one of them. Havoc pfp Our narrator is Maggie a nosy octogenarian who has taken it upon herself to fix other people s lives even if they haven t exactly asked for her help She s already fled one hotel in Europe due to her meddling taking an unexpected turn She s unlikeable and unreliable and should probably be in some sort of retirement home with locks on the outside of the doors What will happen when Maggie pits herself against someone who s just as awful as she is And what if that person just happens to be an eight year old boy It s probably best if you go into this book mostly blind but I will reiterate that this is a dark and insane read It starts off fairly tame and then goes completely off the rails You can feel the tension build as you turn the pages And then the ending is kind of insane but also kind of brilliant and I am not exactly sure how I should feel about any of it My overall rating 4. Ebook avec drm 45 stars rounded down If you like twisted and suspenseful tales narrated by awful old women with a whole host of personality disorders definitely consider giving this one a read It s a wild ride. EPub havoc dh Many thanks to NetGalley and Harper for providing me with an advance copy of this book to review Its expected publication date is December 3 2024 0063378892 Havoc is a novel about two people locked in a battle to beat each other whilst staying in a hotel in Egypt Maggie is eighty one and hiding out in Egypt following a situation at her previous hotel in Switzerland thanks to her habit to interfering with strangers personal lives when she believes their relationships to be unhappy When an eight year old boy Otto arrives at the hotel Maggie is staying at with his mother she immediately wants to befriend them but that quickly sours when it turns out Otto has worked out what she does and soon they re caught in an escalating battle starting to impact others at the hotel as well. Havoc dh rotation This is a darkly comic book told from Maggie s perspective and as might be apparent from the summary you can t always trust what she says The concept is really around these two duplicitous characters both unlikely for this kind of genre trying to beat the other in increasingly dark ways but with an undercurrent of exploring Maggie s past and what has led her to this point It is a fun book with some notable twisty moments and the setting is focused on travellers staying in Egypt occasionally poking fun at them and their lack of knowledge about the locals and the place they re in The ending is quite sudden really relying on a final twist but it did feel like the rest of the book paved the way for it. Hormone havoc book Havoc often feels like a film and though the blurb I read compared it to The Talented Mr Ripley I would also draw a comparison with Bullet Train as the plot really plays with expectations of children and older people and what they can do It s an enjoyable book good for when you want something that plays out like a darkly comic thriller without too much thinking needed 0063378892 I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway contest in exchange for an honest review Maggie Burkhart eighty one year old widow has been living at the Royal Karnak Palace Hotel in Egypt during the COVID 19 pandemic for the past three months Unfortunately Maggie has a bad habit of interfering into other people s relationships For example she steals a yellow scarf from the hotel room from a beautiful single Greek tourist and places it in another couples bed thus causing rife in the marriage Regrettably Otto an intelligent eight year old boy sees her and blackmails her Sadly the vicious pranks they exchange become increasingly horrible I finally had to stop reading when Maggie left the door open to the three cockatiels during the night and a stray cat slaughtered them This is a great book for anyone who loves psychological thriller But I have to be honest being an animal lover the image of the killed birds really turned me off 0063378892 Title HavocAuthor Christophen BollenFormat Narrator Maggie Meg ReedPublisher Harper AudioGenre Mystery Audiobook Release Date December 3 but Otto is of a challenge The blurb mentions The Bad Seed and yes Otto reminded me of Patty McCormick s character in the late 50 s movie The Bad Seed However he also seems like a young Jacob from William Landay s book Defending Jacob You probably know the Jacob book but might be too young to remember the classic psychological horror thriller The Bad Seed which features a mother who begins to suspect that her seemingly sweet and innocent eight year old daughter Rhoda Penmark 2024 0063378892

In the vein of The Bad Seed comes a twisty atmospheric psychological suspense about a meddlesome elderly guest at a decadent luxury hotel who believes she has left her problematic past behind until she decides to interfere in the lives of a young mother and her eight year old son and finally meets her wicked match The war between age and youth has never been so vicious Eighty one year old widow Maggie Burkhardt came to the Royal Karnak to escape But not in quite the same way as most other guests who are relaxing at this threadbare luxury hotel on the banks of the Nile Maggie a compulsive fixer of other people s lives may have found herself in hot water at her last hotel in Switzerland and just might have needed to get out of there fast But here at the Royal Karnak under the hot Saharan sun she has a comfortable suite a loyal confidante in the hotel manager Ahmed and a handful of sympathetic friends similar long termers who understand her still vivid grief for her late husband Peter Here she is merely the sweet old lady in Room 309 One morning however Maggie notices a new arrival at a mournful looking young mother named Tess and her impish eight year old Otto Eager to help Maggie invites them into her world But it isn t long before Maggie realizes that in her longing to be a part of their family she has let in an enemy much stronger than she bargained for In scrawny homely Otto Maggie Burkhardt has finally met her match Havoc by Christopher BollenHavoc by Christopher BollenThis was another Goodreads Giveaway that I was excited to get into I mean how could you not be excited about an 81 year old widow Maggie who has founder herself living at a hotel in Egypt after her husband died a few years ago being involved in a battle with an eight year old boy Otto who just arrived. Havoc bb and jj While this wasn t a bloody fight filled with jump scares it still had enough shenanigans going on to keep it entertaining The slow burn of Maggie Otto s love hate relationship stretched throughout with a series of events where each one tries to outdo the other. Havoc knives The visuals provided in HAVOC were spectacular but not overdone in a too wordy way While the imagery was great made me want to see that area in person the reminders of the HEAT quickly erased any thoughts of traveling there. Havoc dh rotation Will Maggie s past catch up to her Will Maggie or Otto win their battle Let s just hope the land of pharaohs will be able to withstand the HAVOC that ensued 0063378892 Eighty something year old Maggie returns to the Hotel Karnak on the banks of the Nile to live out the rest of her life but meets an unlikely eight year old Otto who gets in the way of her lifestyle Maggie is a self made love arbitrator who decides on the sly to interfere in couples lives and engineer their break up when she thinks one of the women in the marriage is or will be unhappy Otto has witnessed her leaving false trails that led to the break up of a family in the hotel and he decides to play cat and mouse with Maggie throughout the book He is diabolical in getting back at Maggie when she doesn t give in to his blackmail for video games and items for his mother A dark tale of warring minds both of which get ever desperate until they both seem to go off track It was hard to believe that an eight year old could be so diabolical but then this is fiction and Maggie is equally wicked The last page of the book left me wondering if Otto intended such an ending The Egyption god of disorder violence and foreigners in Egypt Set who is mentioned in the book seems to reign over these two opponents. Havoca abergavenny It was an engrossing read leaving the reader wondering throughout what craziness will be the next thing to happen 0063378892 Amazingly dark but also the book is good fun In some ways predictable there s a big twist at the end that I think Bollen expects us to know but other bleak things come as surprises If you have a weak stomach don t read but I thoroughly enjoyed this tale of a psycho old lady and a psycho child trying to end each other. Havoc synonyms The book is pretty short and Bollen keeps it fast paced The prose isn t amazing but that doesn t really matter esp as he also does a good job with the unreliable narrator element I also thought he wrote Egypt well he doesn t try to really get into the culture which would be unwise but he gets the expat scene and there s enough cultural detail that it feels realistic Surely there are references to Christie as well but it s been so long since I read that book that I can t be sure A very engrossing thriller for those who enjoy this genre Extra points for being willing to write such a devious child 0063378892 Oh my I have no idea what I have just listened to Definitely dark often crazy sometimes funny and impossible to quit listening to A psychological thriller unlike anything I have ever read A meddlesome 81 year old woman who has an unstoppable urge to help people she thinks are troubled meets her match with an 8 year old little boy who could be compared to Patty McCormick in the Bad Seed Together they wreak Havoc upon each other and the guests and staff at the once opulent hotel in Luxor Egypt where they have gathered to escape Covid lockdowns in their home countries You will not soon forget Maggie Burkhardt or the ending 0063378892 Apart from the mention of covid every other page which will date this book horribly it just tries too hard. Havoc book The woke are correct the premise is that the old lady goes about a hotel in lockdown to liberate couples and the only couple who she doesn t feel the need to split up is.
