Zina Abbott is the pen name used by Robyn Echols for her historical novels Her novel Family Secrets was published by Fire Star Press in October 2014 and her novelette A Christmas Promise was published by Prairie Rose Publications in November 2014 The first two novellas in the Eastern Sierra Brides 1884 series Big Meadows Valentine and A Resurrected Heart are now available The author currently lives with her husband in California near the Gateway to Yosemite She enjoys family history and any kind of history When she is not piecing together novel plots she pieces together quilt blocks Surrounded by war can she safely reach her family in California Lucy Baxter lived peacefully in Kansas with her aunt until by 1863 the War Between the States made life for two lone women insufferable and dangerous Her dream of teaching school is shattered With her fianc and her Uncle Wilcox among the fallen Aunt Caroline has decided to get both of them to safety by traveling to California to join Lucy s father Only Lucy never fond of her stepmother stayed behind when her father left years early That stepmother died but her father married again Will he and his new wife welcome her Malachi Foster s dreams of striking it rich in the gold and silver fields in the West left him disillusioned Tired of living like a rodent in a burrow he accepts a job driving oxen pulled wagons loaded with supplies for the mining towns he recently walked away from When asked to travel by stagecoach to Kansas to help drive a small freight train returning with goods found only in the East Malachi hesitates If he travels closer to the battlefields there might be those who question why he is not enlisted in one army or the other In the end a gut feeling or maybe something whispering to his spirit helps him decide He will go Although written as a standalone book you might also enjoy reading the author s two related Prairie Roses Collection books Pearl and Clara Enjoy all of the books in the Prairie Roses Collection by searching by the series name in Lucy Prairie Roses CollectionBook 46great book This was a great book and what a fantastic author I highly recommend this book and author I can t wait to read the next book by this wonderful author Fiction Historical Fiction Zina Abbott writes a story about the plight of families moving West in the 1860s The difficult decisions families made who went who stayed what to take who to trust and what route to travel In 1863 Lucy Baxter and her aunt Caroline Wilcox are trying to hold on to their family Kansas farm while the men serve in the Civil War When the two women decide to travel West they encounter men making absurd rules to join a Wagon Trail Will their marriages of convenience result in a happily ever after Some interesting historical facts are What is a community property state When did California and Nevada become states What job opportunities are in the West for a trained teacher and an inspiring lawyer Lucy Book 46 in the Prairie Roses Collection is a compelling read with likeable characters Lucy her aunt Caroline and Malachi Foster and includes Pearl and Michael Stanwyck from Book 16 and Clara and Will Clayton from Book 25 with some unexpected twists and turns plus a believable resolution This mom of sons enjoyed the wisdom of Lucy s father Jack Baxter and his interaction with Malachi Foster Prairie Rose Lucy s journey from Kansas to California in 1863 had this avid reader research and remember her own 1985 week long 2016 mile road trip from Chicago to Los Angeles California with her four and seven year old sons Did we travel the California Trail In 1985 we had maps highways motels and restaurants along the way plus travel advice on how NOT to have your car overheat while driving through Death Valley in July with 110 degree temperatures Being on a limited budget we stayed at Motel Six hotels and ate at Denny s with an adult meal kids eat free Utah was a moonscape with highway signs next gas station 350 miles and ranch exit a fenced in trailer by the highway exit Very different from 1980s travel in the Midwest This reader can t imagine making this trip lengthy trip in a covered wagon pulled by oxen and trusting a wagon train master Fiction Historical Fiction The war between the States broke many families apart and left a lot of women alone on their own. The lonely hearts book club by lucy gilmore A heartfelt tale that will keep you turning the pages to find out what happens Fiction Historical Fiction Life is becoming dangerous for Lucy and her aunt so living near family is the best thing to do But traveling is long and dangerous but luckily they get some help Can they accept what is asked from them to arrive safe with their family This story was well developed and had great characters The first part was a little slow but I enjoyed reading this Fiction Historical Fiction
