This was a fascinating WWII history for middle grades. No better friend book review Notes on content No language issues that I remember No sexual content Numerous deaths in the war are mentioned throughout the book without going into gory detail What starvation and dysentery do to the body are mentioned Run ins with wild animals in the jungle are mentioned 9780316344678 What an unbelievably touching and heartbreaking story of a dog with a determination no human could touch Amazing I love true stories and this one did not disappoint I highly recommend this touching story about how a man and his dog survived multiple POW camps.

This book is just nuts and I can t truly believe that it s true I enjoyed it but I honestly think I would like the movie better How is it not a movie There is so much action 9780316344678 A simple story another amazing story of the heart of a dog and the bond between dog and master What makes these animal stories amazing is that they are so rare among the millions of pets loved by owners What makes them believable is that there are so many of these stories Stories and movies of this type prompt people especially kids to want a pet just like the one they read about Unfortunately odds are the heart of the animal and the bonding won t be repeated 9780316344678 Heck of a story If you hate dogs then this book may not be as enjoyable tho I accidentally got the young readers edition lol so can t speak to the adult version but if I read this in 6th grade it would have topped Sarah Dessen books Would like to go back in time and read the adult version but here we are 5 stars for the story and Judy Frank 9780316344678 A biography of Judy a dog who worked on a British ship in China before WWII and then traveled to Singapore where she ended up evacuated with prisoners of war headed to Indonesia The book outlines her many misadventures how vital she was to many of the people she was around how she saved lives and how she bonded with one young British soldier Frank Williams in particular towards the end of the war and how they kept each other alive as POWs. Book no better friend than you This has been adapted for a middle grade audience from the adult book of the same name I m guessing the disturbing details of POW life and war casualties are the main difference as this is kept pretty mild for a WWII biography of a POW The seriousness of the situation is conveyed but not all the gory details that definitely could ve been part of such a story Judy s story is really truly incredible And it is inspiring to hear how many lives she saved Frank doesn t really show up until about halfway through the book The two did have an exceptional bond and how they stayed together through multiple POW camps is a testament to their devotion and Frank s incredible training of Judy My one qualm with the book was the way the author seemed to be extra negative against the Korean soldiers forced into working as prison guards Yes I agree any maltreatment of humans by other humans is horrible No I don t have a problem with the facts being relayed But the way it was worded didn t just state the fact that those particular guards were mean at that one camp it felt broadly applied to all Koreans and there s a phrase that stated that Koreans eat dog in a way that implies all current Koreans eat dog the number who do has drastically declined in the past few decades I m going to have one of my Korean American co workers read that part of this book and see what they think of it before I put this on our shelves since we have numerous Korean students Other than that one part bombings and adventures in dangerous jungles 9780316344678 A middle grade edition of the New York Times bestselling No Better Friend the extraordinary tale of friendship and survival in World War IINo Better Friend tells the incredible true story of Frank Williams a radarman in Britain s Royal Air Force and Judy a purebred pointer who met as prisoners of war during World War II Judy who became the war s only official canine POW was a fiercely loyal dog who sensed danger warning her fellow prisoners of imminent attacks and later protecting them from brutal beatings Frank and Judy s friendship an unbreakable bond forged in the worst circumstances is one of the great recently uncovered stories of World War II. Book no better friend review As they discover Frank and Judy s story in this specially adapted text young readers will also learn about key World War II moments through informative and engaging sidebars maps photographs and a timeline No Better Friend A Man a Dog and Their Incredible True Story of Friendship and Survival in World War IIRobert Weintraub is a sports columnist for Slate.
